reanimator.exe is not a standard Windows component, so its filename cannot prove that it is safe or malicious. A legitimate copy can belong to Greatis RegRun Security Suite or RegRun Reanimator, while the similarly named WinReanimator.exe has been documented as rogue fake-antivirus software. The deciding evidence is the file’s full path, digital signature, installation source and behavior.
If the process is crashing, repeatedly appearing or demanding payment, first identify the file and scan it with Microsoft Defender. Then repair or uninstall the associated application. Only after those steps should you use Windows component repair commands such as DISM followed by SFC.

reanimator.exe is an executable name used by more than one program. It is not required for Windows to boot, manage hardware or run ordinary applications. In the legitimate Greatis context, the name is associated with RegRun Security Suite or RegRun Start Control, and Greatis describes RegRun Reanimator as software for removing Trojans, adware, spyware, malware and some rootkits.
Greatis currently lists RegRun Reanimator version 18.65.2026.824, identified as Greatis Software, 2026. The vendor lists support for Windows 11, 10, 8.1, 8, 7, Vista, XP and several Windows Server releases; those version and support statements are vendor-provided and can change.

Third-party file references describe a legitimate reanimator.exe as a non-core Windows process commonly installed in a vendor folder under Program Files. That description is only a clue. Any unrelated program can use the same filename, and a familiar name does not make an unknown download trustworthy.
Is reanimator.exe safe or a virus?
It can be safe when it is part of a genuine Greatis installation, but a related filename is also used by fake security software. Do not classify the file from its name alone.

BleepingComputer documents WinReanimator.exe as an undesirable rogue anti-spyware startup entry. F-Secure classifies Rogue:W32/Reanimator.C as a rogue anti-malware program, and Kaspersky describes Trojan-FakeAV.Win32.Reanimator.a as a fake-antivirus family. These programs simulate security activity, report nonexistent threats and pressure users to buy. Those findings concern the rogue variants, not every file named reanimator.exe.
Why does reanimator.exe keep popping up?
Repeated launches usually indicate a startup entry, a scheduled component, an installed security utility that is failing, or rogue software designed to remain visible. A damaged installation can also produce an application error at every sign-in.

Legitimate product starting with Windows
RegRun components may be configured to run at startup. If you installed the product and the publisher and path match, repeated prompts may reflect a broken update, missing dependency or incompatible setting rather than malware. Repair or uninstall the product instead of deleting its executable.
Rogue fake-antivirus behavior
Rogue variants commonly add a startup entry and display false scan results or advertising. A payment demand, a claim that your computer is already infected, or a support number in a pop-up is not proof of a real Windows warning. Microsoft states that genuine Microsoft error and warning messages never include phone numbers.
Corrupted Windows components
If the message names a missing DLL, reports an application error immediately after startup, or affects several unrelated programs, Windows component corruption may be involved. Repair the application first, then use DISM and SFC as described below.
How can I identify the exact reanimator.exe file safely?

- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager. If the short view appears, select More details.
- On the Processes or Details tab, locate
reanimator.exeorWinReanimator.exe. Right-click it and choose Open file location. Record the complete path and the name of the containing product. - Close the process only if you need to stop an active pop-up while investigating. Ending it does not remove the program and can interrupt a legitimate security scan.
- Right-click the file, choose Properties, and open Digital Signatures. A valid Greatis Software signature supports a legitimate RegRun installation, but a signature alone is not conclusive. An unexpected publisher, an invalid signature or no signature is a reason to treat the file cautiously.
- Check Details and General for the product name, version and creation location. Compare those details with software you knowingly installed.
- Do not trust a pop-up’s telephone number, payment page or claim that it is a Microsoft alert. Close the window through Task Manager if necessary rather than calling the number.
How do I scan reanimator.exe for malware?
Run Microsoft Defender before uninstalling a suspicious program so that active components are identified and cleaned in the correct order.
- Open Settings > Privacy & security > Windows Security > Virus & threat protection.
- Select Scan options, choose Full scan, and start the scan. Allow it to quarantine or remove detections, then restart if Windows requests it.
- If the file returns, launches before the normal desktop or cannot be removed, return to Scan options and choose Microsoft Defender Offline scan. Save open work first; Windows will restart and scan outside the normal desktop.
- After the scan, open Protection history to see the detection name and affected path. Keep that information if you need help from the software publisher or Microsoft support.
Microsoft advises obtaining software from the official vendor rather than from cracks, keygens or bundled download sites. If the file came from one of those sources, consider the entire installer untrusted even when the filename appears familiar.
How do I remove an unwanted reanimator.exe or WinReanimator installation?
Remove the associated application through Windows after security scanning. Do not start by deleting the executable from its folder.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps. Search for RegRun, Reanimator, WinReanimator or any product that matches the file’s recorded publisher and path.
- Select the entry, choose the three-dot menu and click Uninstall. Follow the vendor’s uninstaller and restart when asked.
- If the program is not listed there, open Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features, select the matching entry and choose Uninstall or Change.
- Run another Defender scan after removal. Check Task Manager and the startup list to confirm that the process no longer returns.
- Only after the product is uninstalled should you inspect its former folder for leftovers. Do not delete shared files or an entire security-product folder while the product is still registered, because that can leave broken services and uninstall entries.
If Defender identifies the file as malicious but the uninstaller fails, follow the security product’s cleanup instructions and restart into Safe Mode only when those instructions specifically require it. Keep your network disconnected while dealing with active rogue software if it is displaying payment pages or attempting to download more components.

How do I repair a legitimate app that reports a reanimator.exe error?
Windows provides a repair path that preserves the installation before you resort to system-wide commands.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find the associated RegRun or other legitimate application, open its three-dot menu and choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair and test the application. Repair normally keeps its data and settings.
- If Repair is unavailable or does not help, select Reset. Reset can remove the application’s stored data and settings, so use it only after recording any configuration you need.
- For a traditional desktop program, open Control Panel > Programs and Features and look for Repair or Change instead.
- Restart Windows and launch the program again. If the same error appears, uninstall it, restart, and install a current copy from the vendor you trust.
How do I fix Windows corruption connected with the error?
Use DISM first and SFC second from an elevated Command Prompt. DISM repairs the component store that SFC uses as its source.

- Open Start, type Command Prompt, right-click it and choose Run as administrator. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealthand wait for it to complete. It can remain at one percentage for a while. - When DISM finishes, run
sfc /scannow. Do not close the window until verification reaches 100 percent. - Restart Windows and try the affected application again.
SFC may report that it found no violations, repaired files, or could not repair some files. If it cannot repair everything, run DISM again, confirm that Windows Update is functioning, restart and repeat SFC once. Persistent corruption may require the Windows recovery options or help from Microsoft support rather than repeated deletion of application files.

A failed setup can be caused by another service, security tool or startup program holding a file open. Retry in a clean boot after the ordinary uninstall path fails.

- Open the Startup tab and select Open Task Manager. Disable nonessential startup items, close Task Manager and click OK in System Configuration.
- Restart and retry the repair or uninstall. Re-enable services and startup items afterward by returning to System Configuration and choosing normal startup.
If the operation still fails in a clean boot, Microsoft says interference from another service or app is unlikely. At that point, use the publisher’s installer or removal guidance and preserve the exact error text, version and path for support.
Which mistakes should I avoid?
- Do not judge by filename alone. Legitimate RegRun software and rogue WinReanimator use related names.
- Do not call a number shown in a warning. Microsoft error and warning messages do not include phone numbers.
- Do not pay to clear a pop-up. Fake-antivirus programs use payment pressure and invented detections as part of the scam.
- Do not manually delete a signed security product’s executable first. Uninstall or repair the product so its services, startup entries and shared files are handled together.
- Do not run multiple untrusted cleaners at once. They can interfere with one another and make it harder to identify the original file.
- Do not assume a clean filename means a clean download. A bundled installer, crack, keygen or unsolicited attachment is suspicious by provenance.
