The name refers to a registration helper, not a Windows service or security component. Its practical role is tied to the older Assassin’s Creed PC installation and its registration workflow. That explains why it may appear at sign-in even when you did not manually launch the game. A clean scan is reassuring, but it cannot compensate for an implausible location or an invalid signature. Conversely, a different hash or file size can reflect another legitimate release, language build or patch. Make the decision from all available signals instead of one number.

A copy in C:Windows, C:WindowsSystem32, a temporary directory or an unrelated download folder is not explained by the documented game installation. 2. Inspect the digital signature
- Right-click the file in File Explorer and select Properties.
- Open the Digital Signatures tab.
- Select the signature, choose Details and confirm that Windows reports it as valid and identifies Ubisoft Entertainment Inc.
Microsoft explains that verifying a signature is intended to show that a file has not been altered since signing and comes from a trusted source. A missing, invalid or unrelated signature is a red flag, although a signature by itself does not prove that the file is appropriate for your particular installation. If Windows cannot display a signature, treat that as a reason to pause and scan rather than as permission to run it.
3. Compare version and hash when you need stronger evidence

4. Scan the exact file with Microsoft Defender
- Right-click the executable in File Explorer.
- Choose Show more options if the Defender command is hidden by the compact Windows 11 menu.
- Select Scan with Microsoft Defender and wait for the result.
Do not create an exclusion simply to silence an alert. Microsoft warns that an exclusion prevents real-time checking of the excluded item, which can hide a genuine replacement later. If another antivirus product is installed, follow its quarantine instructions too, but do not run multiple conflicting real-time exclusions just to keep the game launching.
5. Escalate a persistent detection
Update Defender security intelligence, then run a Full scan. If the detection returns, or the file appears to evade normal Windows operation, use Microsoft Defender Offline. It restarts the computer and scans from the Windows Recovery Environment before ordinary startup programs load. Review Protection history afterward and follow Microsoft’s malware-removal guidance if other suspicious activity is present.
Why does registrationreminder.exe keep popping up at startup?

Task Manager’s Startup tab may show only one launch point, while Autoruns can reveal a scheduled task or RunOnce value that recreates the prompt. Search the exact spelling and inspect the command line, not just the friendly display name. If the command points to a deleted folder, disable the stale reference and restart before concluding that the executable itself is still active.
