Is remoteplayinstaller.exe safe?

A sample analyzed on December 11, 2023, and another analyzed on January 13, 2026, both used the name remoteplayinstaller.exe and were marked “Malicious activity.” The 2026 report recorded autorun changes, certificate changes, dropped or overwritten executables, command execution, and firewall-rule activity. Those observations apply to the analyzed samples, not to every file with the same name; they are a reason to verify your copy rather than a universal verdict that Sony’s installer is malware.

How should I check a suspicious copy before running it?
Do not open an unknown copy again while you investigate. Use the following sequence, which separates containment from a clean installation.
- Stop execution. Close the installer and do not bypass SmartScreen, antivirus warnings, or User Account Control just to make it run.
- Record where it came from. Note the browser, message, attachment, or website that supplied it and the full file path. Keep any Windows Security alert and detection name.
- Protect sensitive accounts. If you already ran the file, disconnect the PC from the internet temporarily and avoid signing in to banking, email, or game accounts on that machine until a scan is complete. Use a separate trusted device to change passwords if you suspect credential theft.
- Update Defender’s intelligence. Open Windows Security → Virus & threat protection → Protection updates → Check for updates.
- Run a full scan. Go to Virus & threat protection → Scan options → Full scan → Scan now. Let it finish; a quick scan is not a substitute when an unknown executable has run.

- Only then remove the file. After the scan has handled the threat, delete the installer from Downloads or quarantine it through Windows Security. Emptying the Recycle Bin prevents accidental reopening.
Do not download a “fix” from a third-party page while investigating. Microsoft warns that malware commonly arrives through deceptive links, attachments, and bundled software; the safe replacement is the official Sony download followed by a security scan.
What does the official PS Remote Play PC installation require?

To install the verified copy, download PS Remote Play from Sony, run the installation file, and follow the on-screen instructions. If an older installation is present, remove it through Control Panel → Programs and Features before reinstalling. Do not use the suspicious copy you found as the reinstall source.
How do I fix an installer that will not run or an installation that is corrupted?

- Uninstall and reinstall PS Remote Play from Sony’s current installer.
- Visit the graphics-card manufacturer’s support page and install the current driver for the exact GPU and Windows edition.
- Restart after the driver installation and test at the PC’s normal display resolution.
If the screen remains blank in other graphics applications, investigate the display connection and graphics driver separately. If the blank screen is accompanied by autorun changes, dropped executables, firewall modifications, or Defender detections, stop troubleshooting the app and return to the containment sequence.
How do I fix sign-in, console pairing, or startup failures?
PS Remote Play must use the same PlayStation account as the console, and the console must be available for Remote Play. Confirm the console-side settings before changing Windows files.

- Leave the console powered on or configured for rest mode, enable Remote Play on the console, and install the latest console system software.
- If automatic discovery fails, put the console and PC on the same network.
- In the PC app, choose Pair Device for PS5 or Add Device for PS4.
- Enter the number displayed by the console when the PC app requests it.
A successful Windows installation does not by itself pair a console. Account mismatch, disabled Remote Play, outdated console software, and a PC and console on different networks can each prevent startup or discovery.
What network settings does PS Remote Play need?

- Test again after restarting the router, console, and PC.
Lag, disconnections, or failure to connect do not identify the installer as malware. Treat them as network problems unless they occur with the security and persistence indicators described earlier.
