What Is runcosk.exe? Is It Safe, and How to Fix runcosk.exe Errors on Windows

runcosk.exe is not identified as a core Windows executable. Comfort Software documents it as a component copied to WindowsSystem32 when the pre-login on-screen keyboard in Comfort On-Screen Keyboard Pro or Comfort Keys Pro is enabled. That is a legitimate use, but the filename alone cannot prove that every copy is safe.

Check the complete path, digital signer, installed Comfort product, startup command, and Microsoft Defender result before deciding what to do. A System32 copy associated with an installed Comfort product is more consistent with the documented deployment. A copy in %TEMP%, Downloads, AppData, or an unexplained startup command deserves investigation and scanning.

What is runcosk.exe used for?

runcosk.exe is documented by Comfort Software as part of its pre-login on-screen-keyboard feature. When that feature is enabled, the vendor instructs users to copy four files into the Windows system folder: runcosk.exe, CsCredentialLogon.dll, CsCredentialLogon64.dll, and cskeyboardlogon.dll. The files allow the on-screen keyboard to be available before a user signs in.

This makes runcosk.exe an accessibility and input component associated with a Comfort product, not a universal Windows shell file. Windows does not require a file with this name on every installation. Its presence can be normal on a computer where the relevant Comfort software is installed, while the same name elsewhere can be a leftover, a damaged installation, or an impersonating file.

Do not confuse it with similarly named files such as runcs.exe or Rancoz.exe. Those are different filenames and provide no evidence about the file on your computer. The reviewed vendor material also does not publish an official hash or a universal version baseline for runcosk.exe, so a filename or timestamp cannot authenticate it by itself.

Is runcosk.exe safe?

It can be safe when its provenance matches the documented Comfort deployment, but there is no blanket yes-or-no answer. Treat safety as a verification decision rather than a name-based verdict.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
What you find What it suggests Recommended response
WindowsSystem32runcosk.exe, a valid signer matching the installed Comfort product, and no Defender detection Consistent with the vendor’s documented pre-login keyboard component Keep it, keep the associated software updated, and continue normal security scans
The file is in %TEMP%, Downloads, AppData, a random user folder, or a removable drive Not the documented deployment location; could be a leftover or an impersonating copy Do not run it; record the path and scan the file and system
Comfort software is not installed, but a startup entry still launches runcosk.exe Possible stale reference or unwanted persistence Inspect the startup command with Autoruns, scan, then remove the stale entry if appropriate
The signer is missing or does not match the installed product Origin is not established Quarantine or leave it blocked while you investigate; do not create an antivirus exclusion
Defender reports a detection, or the process repeatedly recreates itself Potentially unwanted or malicious activity cannot be ruled out Leave the item quarantined, run a full scan, and use Defender Offline if persistence remains

A legitimate role does not make an unexpected or modified copy safe. Conversely, an alert is a reason to investigate provenance, not a reason to download a replacement executable from an unofficial file-hosting site.

How do I verify the runcosk.exe file on my PC?

Use the following sequence before deleting, restoring, or allowing the file. It preserves the evidence you need to distinguish a broken Comfort installation from an unwanted startup program.

  1. Locate the exact file. Open Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc. If runcosk.exe is running, right-click it and choose Open file location. For a startup-only error, note the path shown in the startup entry or error dialog. Copy the full path somewhere safe; do not rely on the filename displayed in a shortcut.
  2. Check file properties. Right-click the file, select Properties, and review the General, Details, and Digital Signatures tabs. A signature that names the expected software publisher is useful evidence, while an absent, invalid, or unrelated signature lowers confidence. Windows may show a signature as valid even when the file is not the copy you expected, so compare the signer with the product actually installed.
  3. Confirm the associated product. Go to Settings > Apps > Installed apps and look for Comfort On-Screen Keyboard Pro or Comfort Keys Pro. If neither product is installed, do not infer legitimacy merely from a System32 location. If one is installed, record its version and whether the pre-login keyboard feature is enabled.
  4. Inspect persistence and command-line details. Microsoft Sysinternals Autoruns enumerates Startup folders, Run and RunOnce registry keys, services, and other auto-start locations. Run it as an administrator, search for runcosk, and inspect the image path, arguments, publisher, and location that launches it. A command pointing to a deleted drive, a user-writable temporary folder, or an unrelated script needs separate investigation.
  5. Update Defender security intelligence. In Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Protection updates, choose Check for updates. Updating before scanning helps Defender use its current detection data.
  6. Run a full scan. Choose Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Scan options > Full scan. Microsoft describes a full scan as checking every file and program on the device. Leave the file quarantined if Defender detects it while you establish its origin.
  7. Use Defender Offline when persistence is suspected. If the process returns after removal, launches before normal Windows startup, or cannot be cleaned while Windows is running, choose Scan options > Microsoft Defender Offline scan. Save open work first; the computer restarts and scans in the Windows Recovery Environment.

Do not add an exclusion simply to stop an alert. An exclusion would allow the file to run without the protection you are using to establish whether it is trustworthy.

Why does Windows say it cannot find runcosk.exe?

The messages Windows cannot find runcosk.exe and We couldn’t find this app usually indicate a broken path rather than proof that Windows itself is missing a required component. Microsoft identifies several common causes: the application was uninstalled, the path no longer exists, or the entry points to a removable or network drive.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Find the broken startup reference

  1. Open Settings > Apps > Startup and look for an entry associated with Comfort software or an unrecognized command.
  2. Use Autoruns to search all startup locations if the entry is not visible in Settings. Check the executable path and any arguments, not just the display name.
  3. If the path points to a drive that is disconnected, reconnect that drive temporarily and verify whether the file belongs to the Comfort installation. Do not launch an unknown copy merely because reconnecting makes the error disappear.

Repair the installation when you still need the keyboard

If Comfort On-Screen Keyboard Pro or Comfort Keys Pro is installed and you need its pre-login keyboard, use the vendor’s official installer or its repair option. Reinstalling or repairing the complete product is safer than copying a lone EXE from a download site because the feature depends on the related DLL files as well as runcosk.exe. After repair, restart and confirm that the pre-login keyboard and normal sign-in both work.

Remove a stale entry after an intentional uninstall

If you removed the Comfort product and do not need its pre-login keyboard, disable or delete only the obsolete startup reference. Microsoft lists these Run locations as possible sources:

  • HKLMSoftwareWow6432NodeMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionRun
  • HKLMSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionRun
  • HKCUSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionRun

Before editing the registry, open Registry Editor, select the key you intend to change, choose File > Export, and save a backup. Registry edits can have unintended consequences. Remove only the value that clearly points to the uninstalled Comfort component; do not delete an entire Run key or unrelated values. Restart Windows, verify that the message is gone, and scan again if the entry reappears.

What should I do if Defender flags runcosk.exe?

Keep the detection quarantined while you determine whether the file is the expected Comfort component. Open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Protection history and record the detected path, threat name, action, and time. Then compare that path with the location you found in Task Manager or Autoruns.

  • If the path is unexpected, the signer is absent or mismatched, or Comfort software is not installed, do not restore the file. Run a full scan and investigate startup persistence.
  • If the file is in System32 and the Comfort product is installed, do not assume the alert is harmless. Check the signature, update Defender, run a full scan, and contact the software vendor through its official support channel before restoring anything.
  • If the detection returns after a restart, run Microsoft Defender Offline. A recurring item can be recreated by a startup command, scheduled task, service, or another file.
  • Never download a replacement runcosk.exe from a file-hosting site and never disable protection just to make the warning disappear.

Only restore a quarantined file after its path, signer, installed product, and scan results give you a documented reason to trust it. If you cannot establish that provenance, leaving it quarantined is the safer choice.

What if runcosk.exe is missing after uninstalling Comfort software?

A missing-file notification after an uninstall usually means Windows still has a startup reference to the old path. The notification does not mean that you should replace the executable. Remove the stale reference through Settings, Autoruns, or the relevant Run value after making a registry backup.

If you later decide that you need the pre-login on-screen keyboard, reinstall the official Comfort product so its installer recreates the complete set of files and registers the feature correctly. Do not copy only runcosk.exe into System32; the documented deployment includes three related DLL files, and a manually copied file can leave permissions or startup configuration inconsistent.

What if runcosk.exe uses high CPU or causes crashes?

High CPU use is a symptom to investigate, not proof that runcosk.exe is malware or that deleting it will solve the problem. First capture the path and signer, then establish whether the process belongs to an installed Comfort product.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. In Task Manager, sort the Processes or Details view by CPU and note whether the usage is continuous or occurs only when the pre-login keyboard is invoked.
  2. Use Open file location and check the same path in Properties. A process running from a user-writable folder deserves more suspicion than the documented System32 deployment.
  3. Inspect the Autoruns command and parent or launching entry. Disable only the specific startup item for a controlled test; do not delete random registry values.
  4. Run Defender’s full scan, followed by Offline scan if the process restarts or cannot be stopped. Keep any detection quarantined.
  5. If the file is verified as part of an installed Comfort product, repair or reinstall that product using its official distribution. If the product is absent, remove the stale startup reference instead of replacing the file.

If crashes continue after the verified component is repaired or the stale entry is removed, check other startup items and Windows event details. The available material does not establish a universal runcosk.exe crash pattern or a normal CPU percentage, so do not treat a particular usage number as a diagnostic threshold.

Which fix is right for my situation?

Situation Best next action Why
Comfort product is installed; path and signer match; scans are clean Keep the component and repair the product if errors continue This matches the documented pre-login keyboard deployment
Comfort product was intentionally removed; only a broken startup reference remains Back up the registry, then disable or remove the stale entry The error is caused by a path that no longer exists
Unexpected path, unknown signer, Defender alert, or repeated recreation Quarantine, scan, inspect Autoruns, and use Defender Offline when needed Provenance and persistence are not trustworthy
Broad evidence of system compromise beyond this file Preserve evidence, back up important data, and seek qualified incident-response help Reinstalling Windows is not a first-line fix for this filename alone

Do not jump straight to reinstalling Windows because one startup reference is broken. Reserve that disruptive step for a broader, confirmed compromise after backups and appropriate professional advice.

After you complete the checks and scans above, Outbyte PC Repair is an optional shortcut for addressing common Windows issues such as broken system elements, invalid redirects, shared DLL problems, startup-related crashes, temporary-file buildup, and app-crash logging. It complements antivirus protection rather than replacing it; it offers a free trial by category for at least two days on Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7, followed by a subscription, and results vary because no utility repairs every crash.

Frequently asked questions

Does runcosk.exe come with every edition of Windows?

No. It is not identified as a universal Windows component. Its documented role is tied to Comfort Software’s pre-login on-screen-keyboard feature, so a clean Windows installation can operate normally without the file.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I safely delete the copy in System32?

Do not delete it solely because the name is unfamiliar. If a Comfort product uses the pre-login keyboard, deletion can break that feature; if the file is suspicious, quarantine and scan it first, then remove the associated persistence or uninstall the unwanted software through a controlled process.

Why does the error appear only when I sign in?

The pre-login keyboard feature is invoked before the normal desktop loads, so its startup reference can fail during sign-in even when Windows otherwise appears healthy. A removed application, disconnected drive, or changed path can leave that reference behind.

How can I find the launch command when Settings shows no startup app?

Search for runcosk.exe in Microsoft Sysinternals Autoruns. It checks additional Run, RunOnce, service, Startup-folder, and other auto-start locations that may not appear in the simplified Startup page.

Is a valid digital signature enough to prove the file is safe?

No. The signature helps establish publisher identity, but you must also check the full path, installed product, command-line behavior, and current Defender results. A signed file in an unexpected context still warrants investigation.
