runoncepack.exe is not established as a normal Microsoft Windows file. Microsoft documents the RunOnce registry feature, but its documentation does not identify an executable with this exact name. Two sandbox reports observed samples named RunOncePack.EXE changing autorun settings, creating or rewriting executable files, and checking external IP addresses. Those observations make an unidentified copy worth treating as untrusted, but they do not prove that every file with this name is identical or malicious.

Do not run, replace, or whitelist the file merely because an alert or pop-up names it. Record its location and signature, scan it with Windows Security, inspect the startup entry that launched it, and use Microsoft Defender Offline when it persists or behaves suspiciously. The steps below also cover the separate, documented RunOnce error caused by using a standard account.

What is runoncepack.exe?

The exact filename runoncepack.exe has no authoritative Microsoft identity in the documentation available for this issue. A filename by itself cannot establish that a program is part of Windows, safe, or necessary for a game or other application.

What Microsoft does document is RunOnce: registry values that tell Windows to execute a command one time, normally when a user logs on, and then remove the value. RunOnce is a registry mechanism, not proof that an executable called runoncepack.exe belongs to Windows. A community answer has used the name runonce.exe for a Windows “Run Once Wrapper Utility,” but that is a different filename and is not evidence for runoncepack.exe.

What the available behavior reports show

Two ANY.RUN sandbox submissions used the name RunOncePack.EXE. In those particular samples, analysts observed autorun-registry changes, executable files being dropped or rewritten, file creation, and checks involving external IP addresses. These are useful warning signs, not a prevalence study or a universal malware classification. No reliable source establishes a vendor, official installer, cryptographic hash, or detection rate for every copy.

Why the name can appear during a game-related problem

A game launcher, mod installer, or anti-cheat component may legitimately create a one-time startup command, but that does not make an unfamiliar executable trustworthy. The same error can also be produced by a stale RunOnce entry left after an incomplete uninstall, a damaged update, a blocked permission, or unwanted software. You need the file’s path, signature, hash, and origin to distinguish those possibilities.

Is runoncepack.exe safe?

There is no filename-only answer. Treat an unsigned or unexplained copy as potentially unsafe until Windows Security and file verification show otherwise. A file in a temporary download or user-cache directory deserves more scrutiny than a signed file installed by a product you knowingly installed, but path alone is not proof either way.

Evidence What it suggests How much confidence it gives
Digital signature is valid and names the expected publisher The file has passed signature verification for that publisher and has not been altered since signing. Stronger evidence, but still confirm that you expected the software and that the signature is valid now.
Unsigned file in %Temp%, Downloads, or a browser cache Could be an installer remnant or an unwanted dropper. Weak evidence; scan and investigate before execution.
RunOnce or RunOnceEx value points to an unknown path The file is configured for one-time startup. Suspicious when you did not create the entry; preserve details before removal.
Windows Security detects the file Defender has a threat classification for this file or its behavior. Use quarantine or removal through Windows Security; do not restore it casually.
Only a pop-up supplies a phone number or asks for remote access Possible technical-support scam rather than a genuine Windows diagnostic. Do not call, install software, or grant control based on the message.

Do not infer safety from a familiar-looking icon, a recently changed filename, or a claim that the file is a “Windows component.” Microsoft does not identify this exact name in its RunOnce documentation.

How do I verify the file without running it?

First preserve enough information to investigate. Avoid double-clicking the file or downloading a replacement from an untrusted site.

  1. Open the location from the alert or Task Manager. In Task Manager, right-click the process if it is running and choose Open file location. If the alert gives a path, copy it exactly. Record the full path, file size, creation and modification times, and the account that owns the file.
  2. Check the signature. Right-click the file, choose Properties, and open Digital Signatures if that tab exists. Select a signature, choose Details, and confirm that Windows reports a valid signature and an expected publisher. An absent or invalid signature is a reason for more investigation, not automatic proof of malware.
  3. Calculate a SHA-256 hash. In PowerShell, run:
Get-FileHash -LiteralPath "C:fullpathrunoncepack.exe" -Algorithm SHA256

Replace the path with the one you recorded. Save the output with the date and source of the file. A hash is an identifier for that exact file; without a trusted reference for comparison, it does not by itself declare the file safe.

  1. Check how it arrived. Note whether it came from a known application’s installer, a game mod, an email attachment, a cracked program, a browser download, or a temporary directory. Do not trust a random “DLL fixer,” driver site, or support caller offering a replacement.
  2. Do not execute it to test it. Opening an unknown executable can trigger the very startup changes you are trying to investigate. If you must preserve it for an administrator or incident-response team, copy it without launching it and store the copy on removable media that you do not open on another computer.

How do I scan runoncepack.exe with Windows Security?

Windows Security is built into supported Windows editions and can scan the individual file or the whole device. Keep Windows and Defender security intelligence current before scanning.

Scan the file first

  1. Right-click runoncepack.exe in File Explorer.
  2. Choose Scan with Microsoft Defender or Scan with Windows Security, depending on your Windows build.
  3. Allow the scan to complete. If Defender offers Quarantine or Remove, use that action rather than opening the file.

If the context-menu command is missing, open Windows Security from the Start menu, select Virus & threat protection, choose Scan options, select Custom scan, and point it at the folder containing the file.

Run a Full scan

  1. Open Windows Security.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Choose Scan options, select Full scan, and click Scan now.
  4. Leave the computer powered on until the result appears. Review Protection history for the action taken and the affected path.

Use Microsoft Defender Offline when startup behavior persists

Defender Offline restarts the computer and scans in the Windows Recovery Environment. Because the normal Windows session is not fully running, persistent software has fewer opportunities to hide or interfere with the scan. Save work first and close applications.

  1. Open Windows Security and go to Virus & threat protection > Scan options.
  2. Select Microsoft Defender Offline scan, then choose Scan now.
  3. Approve the restart. The scan runs before the ordinary desktop loads.
  4. After Windows starts again, return to Protection history and record the result.

Do not add an exclusion for an unidentified executable just to stop the alert. Microsoft warns that an exclusion prevents Defender from checking the excluded file or process and can leave the device and data vulnerable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I find and inspect the RunOnce entry?

Inspect the registry only after recording the file details. Deleting a value can remove evidence or disrupt legitimate software, especially on a managed computer.

Use Registry Editor carefully

  1. Press Win+R, type regedit, and press Enter. Approve the User Account Control prompt only if you are intentionally inspecting the registry.
  2. Before changing anything, select the key you plan to inspect and choose File > Export. Save the backup with a meaningful name.
  3. Check the per-user RunOnce location: HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionRunOnce.
  4. Check the machine-wide location: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionRunOnce.
  5. Where present, inspect the corresponding RunOnceEx locations. On 64-bit Windows, a 32-bit application may use the registry’s redirected view, so a value can appear under a WOW6432Node path.
  6. Look for a value whose command line names runoncepack.exe or its directory. Record the value name, complete command, quotation marks, arguments, and date of the export.

Microsoft’s documented behavior is that a RunOnce command executes one time and is then deleted. A value that keeps returning, points to a file that no longer exists, or launches from a temporary directory needs further investigation.

Remove a confirmed unwanted entry

If Windows Security identifies the file, let Defender quarantine it first. After quarantine, revisit the relevant RunOnce key and remove only the value that points to the quarantined file. If the computer belongs to an employer, school, or family-managed account, give the exported key and file path to the administrator instead of editing policy-controlled settings yourself.

Why do I keep getting a runoncepack.exe error?

The message can have several causes, and the wording matters. Separate a malware warning from a failed one-time command before choosing a fix.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The file is missing

An entry may still point to a file deleted by an uninstall or by antivirus quarantine. Windows then reports that it cannot find the executable at logon. Confirm the path in the RunOnce value, check Protection history, and remove the stale value after preserving a registry export. Do not download a similarly named executable to satisfy the message.

The command is blocked by account permissions

Microsoft documents a specific limitation: a standard user account cannot execute RunOnce or RunOnceEx commands in the manner covered by its documentation. Microsoft describes this outcome as “by design.” Sign in with an administrator account, or ask the device administrator to perform the installation or startup action. Elevating a suspicious command does not make it safe, so scan and verify the file first.

The path or command line is malformed

Unquoted paths containing spaces, invalid arguments, a moved game folder, or a removed drive letter can make a legitimate one-time command fail. Compare the command in the registry with the current installation path. Repair the owning application’s installation only through its official installer or Windows’ installed-app repair option; never substitute an executable from an unofficial download.

A security product or policy stopped it

Defender, enterprise policy, Controlled folder access, or another security product may block a file that behaves unexpectedly. Read the protection event and policy name. Do not create an exclusion before you understand the detection, because bypassing the check can turn a warning into an execution opportunity.

The error follows an unwanted startup change

Repeated pop-ups, a changed browser home page, new accounts, credential prompts, disabled security settings, or unfamiliar outbound connections raise the stakes. Disconnect the affected computer from the network, run Defender Offline, and change important passwords from a known-clean device. Preserve logs and the suspicious file for an administrator or incident-response professional.

Can I delete runoncepack.exe?

Delete or quarantine it only after you have recorded its details and checked what created it. If Windows Security detects it, quarantine through Windows Security rather than manually deleting it. If no detection exists, an unexplained unsigned file can still be unwanted, but deleting it without removing its startup reference may leave recurring errors or destroy evidence.

  • Do not delete files from C:Windows or C:WindowsSystem32 solely because their names look unfamiliar.
  • Do not replace the file with one downloaded from a search result.
  • Do not use a registry cleaner to erase RunOnce entries in bulk.
  • Do not restore a quarantined copy until you have verified its publisher, source, and purpose.
  • After removal, restart and confirm that the alert, RunOnce value, and unexpected process no longer return.

What should I do if I see a phone number or remote-support request?

Close the page or dialog without calling the number. Microsoft states that its error and warning messages never include phone numbers; a number, urgent payment demand, or request for remote-control software is a strong sign of a technical-support scam. Do not provide passwords, payment details, one-time codes, or access to the computer.

Run Windows Security from the Start menu rather than through a link in the pop-up. If you already granted remote access, disconnect the device from the network, uninstall the remote-control software, run an Offline scan, and change passwords from another trusted device. Contact your bank or other service providers through numbers you obtain independently if financial or account information was exposed.

How do I decide between a targeted fix and a full investigation?

Situation First action Next action
One stale error after uninstalling a known application; no other symptoms Record and export the RunOnce value. Remove the stale value, restart, and verify the error is gone.
Unsigned file in a temporary or download folder Do not run it; scan the file. Run a Full scan and consider Defender Offline if it returns.
Defender detection or repeated autorun recreation Quarantine and disconnect from the network. Run Offline scan and review accounts, browser settings, and startup entries.
RunOnce command fails only for a standard user Test the documented administrator requirement. Have an administrator perform the operation; do not elevate an unverified executable.
Phone number, payment demand, or remote-access request Close it and do not call. Use Windows Security directly and treat the incident as possible fraud.

Keep a short incident record: the exact path, hash, signature result, registry value, Defender event, account used, and actions taken. That record prevents repeated guesswork if the file returns and gives a technician enough context to help without asking you to run it.

What does the evidence establish—and what does it not?

It establishes that RunOnce is a Windows registry feature and that Microsoft documents an administrator requirement for the relevant RunOnce/RunOnceEx execution scenario. It also establishes that two sandbox samples named RunOncePack.EXE showed suspicious autorun and executable-file activity.

It does not establish that every runoncepack.exe is malicious, that Microsoft distributes it, that a particular hash is bad, or that the file is common. Your copy remains unresolved until its path, signature, hash, origin, and scan results are considered together.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can runoncepack.exe be a false positive?

Yes. A stale installer component, an internal tool, or a renamed legitimate file could produce the same name. The available sandbox observations are sample-specific, so compare your file’s publisher, origin, hash, and Defender result rather than relying on the filename.

Will deleting a RunOnce value break Windows?

Removing one value can stop the program associated with that value from completing its next startup task, but it does not remove the RunOnce mechanism itself. Export the key first and delete only a value you understand, particularly on a work or school computer.

Why does the error appear only when I sign in?

RunOnce commands are designed to run during a logon, so a bad path, missing file, or blocked command may remain invisible until that event. Compare behavior under an administrator account only after scanning the executable; account context changes execution rights, not the file’s trustworthiness.

What information should I give a technician?

Provide the full path, SHA-256 hash, signature and publisher result, registry value and command line, Defender Protection history entry, Windows version, and the time the alert appeared. Include whether the computer showed browser changes, new accounts, credential prompts, or unusual network activity, but do not email or upload the executable unless the technician gives you a secure procedure.
