rxpcc.exe is the command-line tool installed with Romex Software’s PrimoCache storage-caching application. It is not a core Windows executable. A copy in the PrimoCache installation folder, such as C:Program FilesPrimoCache, is consistent with a normal installation; a copy in a temporary, Downloads, Public, or otherwise unrelated folder needs investigation before you run or delete it.
The filename alone cannot prove that a copy is safe. Check whether you intentionally installed PrimoCache, verify the complete path and digital publisher signature, and scan an unexpected file with Windows Security. Most ordinary errors are fixed by using an elevated Command Prompt, correcting the command syntax, closing the PrimoCache graphical interface, or repairing the PrimoCache installation.

rxpcc.exe is PrimoCache’s command-line interface (CLI). Romex Software installs it in the same folder as PrimoCache; the vendor gives C:Program FilesPrimoCache as an example. The program lets an administrator control and inspect PrimoCache without using its graphical interface.
Its documented functions include listing volumes and cache tasks, creating or deleting cache tasks, pausing and resuming tasks, flushing deferred writes, reporting cache status and performance, managing level-2 storage, exporting and importing configuration, displaying memory information, and showing version and license details. It exists to administer PrimoCache, not to provide a Windows service that every PC needs.

Is rxpcc.exe a Windows system file?
No. It is supplied by PrimoCache and is separate from core Windows components. If you have never installed PrimoCache, the presence of this filename is not evidence that Windows itself placed it there.
Why might it be running?
PrimoCache’s GUI, a script, an administrator, or another program associated with the cache configuration can launch the CLI. Seeing a process briefly while a cache task is being queried or changed can therefore be normal. Seeing it repeatedly from an unexpected directory, with no PrimoCache installation, or with behavior such as unexplained persistence or network activity is a reason to stop and investigate rather than assume it is legitimate.

Is rxpcc.exe safe?
Safety depends on the particular file, not its name. Treat a copy as more plausible when you deliberately installed PrimoCache, the path is the product directory, the file’s digital signature identifies the expected publisher, and Windows Security reports no threat. None of those checks should be skipped for an unexpected copy.
Check the installation context and path
- Open Task Manager if the process is currently running, right-click the process, and choose Open file location. If that option is unavailable, search for
rxpcc.exein File Explorer and note every copy. - Compare the path with your PrimoCache installation. The expected example is
C:Program FilesPrimoCache, although a user may have selected another folder during installation. - Ask whether PrimoCache was intentionally installed on this computer. An unknown copy in
%TEMP%, Downloads, Public, or a random application directory is unverified even if its filename is identical.
Verify publisher and signature
Right-click the file, choose Properties, and inspect the Digital Signatures tab when it is present. The signer should match the software you intended to install, and Windows should report that the signature is valid. A missing, invalid, or mismatched signature does not automatically prove malware, but it removes an important reason for trusting the file.
Scan before allowing an unexpected copy to run
Windows Security offers quick, full, custom, and Microsoft Defender Offline scans. For a single file, a custom scan can target the containing folder; for a broader concern, use a full scan. Defender Offline restarts into the Windows Recovery Environment, where persistent unwanted software has more difficulty hiding.

Microsoft describes unknown-software warnings as an early warning that potentially undetected malware may be present, while also noting that uncommon programs are not automatically malicious. Keep security intelligence current and do not create a Defender exclusion simply to make an error disappear. If a file appears suspicious, record its full path, properties, publisher information, and the program that launched it before taking cleanup action.

What one malware report can and cannot tell you
A Hybrid Analysis report for one PrimoCache Server MUI Setup 4.4.1 installer sample gave that installer a threat score of 100/100, while the rxpcc.exe item dropped by that sample was listed as “no specific threat.” This is a warning not to trust a filename or an installer blindly, but it does not certify every copy of rxpcc.exe and does not establish that your file is the same sample.
How do I check whether a normal PrimoCache installation is causing the error?
Start with the installation and the command environment before changing Windows security settings. These checks separate a missing or damaged application from a command-line mistake.
- Confirm PrimoCache is installed. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps (the wording may differ on older Windows editions) and look for PrimoCache. You can also inspect the folder where you installed it.
- Locate the executable. If it is in the PrimoCache directory, open a Command Prompt in that folder or use the full path to the executable. Do not substitute a loose download from a file-sharing site for a missing program file.
- Open an elevated prompt. Search for Command Prompt, right-click it, and choose Run as administrator. Romex states that the command-line tool requires administrative privileges. A non-elevated window can produce access or command-failure messages even when the installation is intact.
- Close the PrimoCache GUI. Romex documents that the CLI cannot run while the PrimoCache graphical interface is open. Exit the GUI completely, then retry the command. If both are open, the CLI can return a Multiple Instances error.
- Ask the tool for help. Run
rxpcc /?for general help. For command-specific syntax, runrxpcc ? <command>, replacing<command>with the command you want to inspect.
Which rxpcc.exe commands are useful for troubleshooting?
Use the documented command names and read the output before making a change. Commands are case-insensitive, but options are case-sensitive, so preserve option spelling exactly as shown in the help output.

The CLI also exposes commands for volumes, cache-task creation and deletion, pausing and resuming, flushing deferred writes, level-2 storage, memory information, and version or license information. Use rxpcc ? <command> rather than guessing options for those operations.

How should I interpret exit codes?
Romex documents these return values: 0 means success, 2 means invalid input, 3 means command failure, and 4 means cancellation. An exit code narrows the problem but does not identify its cause by itself. Check the command spelling, option capitalization, privileges, GUI state, and the text printed with the code.
How do I fix common rxpcc.exe errors?
“rxpcc.exe not found” or a missing-file message
- Verify that PrimoCache is still installed and that you are using the correct installation folder.
- Search the Recycle Bin and review recent security-quarantine events. Do not restore a quarantined file until you have verified its path, publisher, and scan result.
- Run the installer’s repair option if PrimoCache provides one, or reinstall PrimoCache from Romex Software’s official source. A loose executable from a download or file-sharing site is not a reliable replacement.
- After repair or reinstallation, open an elevated Command Prompt, close the GUI, and run
rxpcc /?to confirm that the CLI responds.
“Access denied,” privilege, or command-failure errors
Close the current prompt, start Command Prompt with Run as administrator, change to the PrimoCache folder, and retry. If the result is still exit code 3, record the complete command and output, confirm that the target volume or cache task still exists, and use the status command before attempting a destructive change.
“Multiple Instances”
Exit the PrimoCache GUI, including any window minimized to the notification area, then run the CLI again. The documented restriction is that the command-line tool cannot run while the GUI is open; this is not a signal by itself that the file is malicious.
Invalid input or option errors
Run rxpcc /? and then rxpcc ? <command>. Check option capitalization, quotation marks around paths containing spaces, and whether you accidentally copied a GUI instruction into the CLI. Exit code 2 indicates invalid input, so correct the syntax before changing the cache configuration.

Commands cancel or stop partway through
Exit code 4 indicates cancellation. Avoid repeatedly issuing write or import commands while another operation is active. Close other PrimoCache controls, reopen an elevated prompt, confirm the intended target, and retry once you understand which operation was cancelled.

How do I repair or reinstall PrimoCache through Windows?
When the executable exists but the installation is damaged, repair the application rather than replacing individual files.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Select PrimoCache, open Advanced options when that option is available, and choose Repair. Repair attempts to correct the installation without removing application data.
- If Repair does not resolve the problem, return to the same page and use Reset when offered. Reset can remove the app’s local state, so export a PrimoCache configuration first if you can still use the CLI.
- If Windows cannot repair it, uninstall PrimoCache, restart Windows, and reinstall it from Romex Software’s official distribution. Recheck the path and digital signature after installation.
- When uninstalling is blocked or the installer is corrupted, use Microsoft’s Program Install and Uninstall troubleshooter. It is intended for problems such as blocked removal or damaged installer data.
Microsoft also recommends a restart as a basic step for app-installation problems. Use it before repeating repair or uninstall attempts, especially after Windows has installed updates.
What should I do if rxpcc.exe looks suspicious?
Do not run an unknown copy, add a Defender exclusion, or delete evidence merely to stop a pop-up. First preserve the facts needed to distinguish a damaged PrimoCache installation from an unwanted program.

- Update Windows Security security intelligence and run a custom scan of the file’s folder. If the concern extends beyond one file, run a full scan.
- If the file or its launcher persists after normal scanning, restart into Microsoft Defender Offline and scan there.
- When a threat is detected, allow Windows Security to clean it before removing the associated application. Microsoft advises scanning first and removing an unwanted app only after threats are addressed.
- If a suspicious-file review is needed, submit the file to Microsoft through its malware-submission process. Do not upload confidential files or configuration data.
If no intentional PrimoCache installation exists, do not classify rxpcc.exe as a Windows component. Remove the unknown application through Windows after scanning, and investigate any other persistence mechanism or unexpected network activity it created.
Should I delete rxpcc.exe?
Deleting the file is appropriate only when you have established that it belongs to an unwanted or broken installation and have completed the security checks. If you still use PrimoCache, manual deletion can leave the application incomplete and cause more errors. Prefer Windows’ uninstall process, or repair and reinstall the legitimate application, instead of deleting one executable in isolation.

Legitimate software and installers can create separate copies, but duplicate names are not proof that every copy is genuine. Evaluate each path, signature, origin, and scan result independently, especially when one copy is outside the PrimoCache directory.
