sam.game.exe, usually displayed as SAM.Game.exe, is the game-management component of Gibbed’s open-source Steam Achievement Manager (SAM). What files normally appear with it?
A portable release includes the picker and companion files rather than a single installer. Launching a copied SAM.Game.exe after separating it from those files can produce a failed-start message. Keep the archive’s folder structure intact and start the included SAM.Picker.exe unless the release instructions tell you otherwise.

An official copy links back to the Gibbed repository, arrives as the complete release archive, and has a version that makes sense in the Releases page. A suspicious copy often arrives through a download portal, an unsolicited message or a “fixed DLL” page, may contain an installer that the project does not describe, or may ask you to call a support number. Stop when those details do not line up.
Do not combine files from different downloads to make a folder look complete. A picker from one release starting a game component from another can create compatibility problems that look like a Windows error. Redownload the archive as a whole instead.

How do I fix SAM.Game.exe errors on Windows 10 or 11?
Work through the following sequence in order. It addresses the common causes without downloading replacement DLLs or disabling Windows protection. Windows 10 and Windows 11 use slightly different Settings layouts, but the same source, Steam-session and security checks apply to both.
1. Remove an untrusted copy and download the complete release
If the executable came from a mirror, a forum attachment or an unsolicited message, close it and remove the archive. Download the current release from the official Gibbed project, then extract the whole archive rather than copying only SAM.Game.exe. Use a normal folder under your user profile, such as a dedicated games-tools folder, and avoid running an executable directly from a compressed archive.

Check Protection history after the scan. If Defender quarantined a companion file, the picker may report that it cannot start SAM.Game.exe even though the visible executable remains. Restore a file only after independently confirming the archive came from Gibbed and understanding the detection. Otherwise remove the release and obtain a fresh copy.
If SmartScreen blocks the download or launch, select the option to inspect details only after confirming the release came from the official project. Review the displayed publisher and path. Do not disable SmartScreen or Defender merely to bypass an unexplained warning.

5. Diagnose “failed to start SAM.Game.exe” conservatively
GitHub issue #586 records a report that SAM.Picker failed to start SAM.Game.exe; the captured issue did not provide a universal maintainer fix. Treat the message as a prompt to repeat the source, complete-file, Steam-session, network and security checks above.
