schedulerservice.exe is usually a third-party executable installed with MiniTool ShadowMaker as its MTSchedulerService; it is not the filename Microsoft uses for Windows Task Scheduler. The name alone cannot prove that a file is safe. Check its complete path, digital signature, related service, installed product and Microsoft Defender results before repairing or removing anything. A legitimate copy normally sits in the ShadowMaker folder under C:Program Files (or C:Program Files (x86)) and is present because you installed the backup software. A copy in a user profile, Windows directory, temporary folder or unknown location deserves investigation. The sections below show how to identify the owner, repair ShadowMaker, fix Windows Task Scheduler itself, and respond safely to suspicious activity.
What is schedulerservice.exe?
schedulerservice.exe is generally associated with MiniTool ShadowMaker. ShadowMaker runs background services named MTAgentService and MTSchedulerService; independent process references map the executable filename to that scheduler service in the MiniTool ShadowMaker installation directory. Its role is to run backup-related jobs when the product schedules them.

That is separate from Windows’ own Task Scheduler. Microsoft describes Task Scheduler as the service that performs automated tasks on a computer. Windows stores the service implementation in %systemroot%system32schedsvc.dll, not in a file called schedulerservice.exe. Confusing these two components can lead to deleting the wrong file or repairing the wrong service.
The filename is not an identity check. Malware can copy a familiar name, and a damaged installation can produce the same crash message as a legitimate program. Treat the file path, signer, service registration and security scan as a combined identity check.

Is schedulerservice.exe safe?
It can be safe when it belongs to an intentionally installed ShadowMaker copy, is located in the product’s Program Files directory and carries an expected digital signature. It is not safe to assume that every file with this name is legitimate. A file’s location and publisher are more informative than its spelling.
Signs that fit a legitimate ShadowMaker installation
- ShadowMaker is listed in Windows Apps or Programs and Features, and you recognize installing it.
- Task Manager or
services.mscshowsMTSchedulerServiceand, commonly,MTAgentService. - The executable path is inside the installed MiniTool ShadowMaker folder under
C:Program FilesorC:Program Files (x86). - The file’s Properties dialog shows a valid digital signature from the expected software publisher.
- Microsoft Defender and other security checks do not report suspicious behavior.
Signs that require investigation
- The file runs from
C:Users<name>,C:Windows,C:WindowsSystem32, a temporary directory or an unfamiliar drive. - No ShadowMaker installation exists, or you did not authorize backup software on the PC.
- The file has no signature, an invalid signature or a publisher that does not match the installed product.
- A newly created scheduled task launches it at logon, on a timer or with elevated privileges without a clear reason.
- Defender reports the file, or the process keeps returning after you stop or remove it.
Attackers commonly abuse scheduled tasks for persistence, execution and running code under another account. Therefore, an unexpected scheduler-related file should be documented and scanned rather than deleted immediately.
How do I identify which program owns schedulerservice.exe?
Use these checks before choosing repair or removal. Do not rely on a process name shown in a pop-up alone.
- Open Task Manager. Press
Ctrl+Shift+Esc, select the Details tab, locateschedulerservice.exe, right-click it and choose Open file location. If it is not running, continue with the service check. - Check registered services. Press
Win+R, enterservices.msc, and look forMTSchedulerServiceandMTAgentService. Open each service’s Properties to see its executable path and startup type. - Confirm the installed product. In Settings > Apps > Installed apps (or Control Panel > Programs and Features), search for MiniTool ShadowMaker. If it is absent, an orphaned service or a copied executable needs more scrutiny.
- Inspect the signature. Right-click the file, select Properties > Digital Signatures, choose the signer and select Details. An invalid or missing signature is a warning, not an automatic malware verdict.
- Record evidence. Write down the full path, service name, file version, publisher, creation date and any scheduled task that launches it. Save this information before uninstalling or quarantining anything.
Should I repair or remove schedulerservice.exe?
Choose based on ownership and intent, not on the filename. The decision points are the path and signer, whether ShadowMaker is installed and wanted, the exact error text, and whether Defender detects suspicious activity.
| Situation | Safer action | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Signed file in ShadowMaker’s Program Files folder; you use ShadowMaker | Update, repair or reinstall ShadowMaker | The service is probably a legitimate component and may be damaged. |
| Signed ShadowMaker file; you no longer want the product | Uninstall ShadowMaker, then verify services and tasks are gone | Removing the owning product cleans up its registrations more safely than deleting one executable. |
| Unknown path or signer; no known ShadowMaker installation | Preserve the path, run security scans and investigate scheduled tasks | Deleting first can destroy evidence and may leave persistence behind. |

How do I fix errors when schedulerservice.exe belongs to MiniTool ShadowMaker?
Application-level messages such as “ShadowMaker has stopped,” “schedulerservice.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close,” or an access violation point first to the ShadowMaker installation. They do not prove that Windows Task Scheduler is corrupt.

1. Check service state and dependencies
In services.msc, open MTSchedulerService and MTAgentService. Note whether each service is running, stopped or repeatedly starting and stopping. Use the service’s Path to executable to confirm that it points into the same ShadowMaker directory you inspected in Task Manager.
2. Restart once and review the failure time
Restart the affected service only if the file is in the expected signed directory. Then open Event Viewer > Windows Logs > Application and Windows Logs > System and filter around the exact time of the crash. Look for the module named in the faulting application event, service-control errors and changes made immediately before the first failure.
3. Update ShadowMaker from its official distribution channel
An update can replace a damaged executable and correct compatibility problems after a Windows update. Download only from the vendor’s official channel, close ShadowMaker, install the update, then verify that the service path and signature still match the product.
4. Repair or reinstall the product
If the installer offers Repair, use it first. Otherwise uninstall ShadowMaker through Settings > Apps > Installed apps or its own uninstaller, restart Windows, and install a current copy only if you still need the backup features. Export or copy any backup configuration you need before uninstalling.
5. Remove an unwanted installation cleanly
If you do not use ShadowMaker, uninstall it rather than deleting schedulerservice.exe manually. After the restart, check services.msc and Task Scheduler for leftover MTSchedulerService, MTAgentService or ShadowMaker tasks. A leftover service that points to a missing file can be removed with the product’s documented uninstaller; avoid deleting unrelated Windows scheduler entries.

6. Scan when the file is unexpected
If the path, signer or service relationship is suspicious, disconnect from sensitive accounts as appropriate and update Microsoft Defender security intelligence. Run a full Microsoft Defender scan. If unwanted software persists or returns after a normal scan, run Microsoft Defender Offline, which scans outside the normal Windows session. Do not treat a clean scan as proof that every copy of the filename is legitimate; retain the path and task information for further investigation.
How do I fix “Task Scheduler service is not available”?
This message usually concerns Windows’ own scheduler service, not MiniTool’s executable. Microsoft identifies incorrect task configurations, tasks pointing to applications that no longer exist and incompatible tasks after an operating-system upgrade as common causes.
Back up scheduler data before changing it
Before deleting a task or registry entry, create a backup of %SystemDrive%WindowsSystem32Tasks. Also export the TaskCache registry key from HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindows NTCurrentVersionScheduleTaskCache in Registry Editor. Store the backup on a separate drive so you can restore it if the cleanup removes a needed task.
Clean obsolete and broken tasks
- Open Task Scheduler by pressing
Win+R, enteringtaskschd.mscand pressing Enter. - Check whether the console reports that “The selected task … no longer exists” or shows a task whose action targets a removed program.
- Review the task folders and note the exact task name and path. If old
atjobs are present, clean up those obsolete entries first according to Microsoft’s procedure. - For a confirmed corrupted task, delete its matching task file from the backed-up Tasks folder only after recording its name.
- Remove the corresponding
TaskCacheregistry entries, then restart the Task Scheduler service or Windows. - Recreate the task with a valid program path and test it manually from Task Scheduler.
Do not delete an entire task folder or broad registry branch to solve one missing task. A mismatch between the task file and TaskCache entries is the specific condition this cleanup addresses.

sfc /scannow. Wait for verification to finish and follow the result it reports. - Restart Windows and test
taskschd.mscagain. If the DLL is still missing or corrupted, use Windows recovery or installation media appropriate to your edition rather than copying a random file.
Editing the registry incorrectly can prevent services from starting. Export the relevant key first, and stop if the value already matches the documented path but the failure points to broader system corruption.
What should I do if Defender flags schedulerservice.exe?
Do not whitelist the file simply because ShadowMaker is installed. Record the detection name, full path and service or task that launches it, then let Defender quarantine the item if its normal remediation recommends that action.
- Disconnect the PC from networks when practical, especially before signing in to sensitive accounts.
- Update Defender security intelligence and run a full scan.
- Use Microsoft Defender Offline if the detection returns, a process recreates itself, or scans cannot remove it while Windows is running.
- After remediation, review Task Scheduler,
services.msc, startup entries and the file path for leftovers. - Change important passwords from a known-clean device if you have evidence that the suspicious process ran with your account or elevated privileges.
A security alert is a different branch from a normal ShadowMaker crash. Restore or reinstall the backup application only after the system is clean and the replacement installer comes from an official source.

Third-party process references report ShadowMaker stopping, generic “has encountered a problem and needs to close” dialogs and access-violation errors. These messages identify an application symptom, not a definitive cause. Common possibilities include a damaged ShadowMaker installation, incompatible changes after Windows or driver updates, a missing target program in a scheduled backup job, or interference from another security or backup component.
- Compare the first crash time with recent Windows, ShadowMaker or security-software changes.
- Check Event Viewer for the faulting module rather than assuming the executable itself is defective.
- Confirm that every program and drive referenced by a ShadowMaker job still exists and is accessible.
- Test after updating or repairing ShadowMaker; if only one scheduled job fails, recreate that job instead of removing the whole service.
- If crashes continue with a valid installation, preserve event details for the vendor’s support team.
Can I disable schedulerservice.exe?
You can stop or disable MTSchedulerService when you do not need ShadowMaker’s scheduled operations, but doing so prevents its automated jobs from running. Disabling the service does not make an unknown copy safe and does not repair Windows Task Scheduler.

Use services.msc to stop the service temporarily, then set its startup type only after confirming it belongs to ShadowMaker. If the product is unwanted, uninstall it instead; that removes the service and scheduled tasks more completely.
What should I back up before making repairs?
For Windows scheduler cleanup, copy the entire %SystemDrive%WindowsSystem32Tasks folder and export the TaskCache registry key before deleting anything. For ShadowMaker changes, preserve backup definitions and verify that you have access to the actual backup files or recovery media. An external USB flash drive or external backup drive can hold these copies when the system disk is the object of repair.

How can I tell whether the repair worked?
A successful repair has a specific, testable result: ShadowMaker opens without the crash, its intended service remains running, and a test backup or scheduled job completes; or Windows Task Scheduler opens, starts normally and runs a recreated task. Recheck Event Viewer after the test and confirm that no unexpected executable or task has returned.
If the same error returns, compare the path and signer again before repeating cleanup. A recurring unknown file, service or scheduled task should be handled as a security incident, while a signed ShadowMaker failure should be escalated with its event details and product version.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can schedulerservice.exe be a Windows system file?
Microsoft’s built-in scheduler uses the Schedule service and the schedsvc.dll library in the Windows system directory. A file named schedulerservice.exe is therefore not the normal Windows scheduler binary, even when a Windows task is failing at the same time.
Will deleting schedulerservice.exe fix Task Scheduler?
No. Deleting the executable can break ShadowMaker and leave its service registration behind, while Windows Task Scheduler problems usually involve task files, TaskCache entries or schedsvc.dll. Identify the owner first and use the matching repair path.
Where can I see what launched schedulerservice.exe?
Task Manager’s Open file location, the ImagePath shown in services.msc, Task Scheduler’s task actions and Event Viewer timestamps together can reveal the launch chain. Capture those details before stopping or quarantining the process.
Does uninstalling ShadowMaker remove my existing backups?
Uninstalling the application removes its program and service registrations, but backup images stored elsewhere are separate files. Verify the location and readability of those images before uninstalling, and keep a copy of any job definitions you may need to recreate.
