scr.exe is not a standard Windows screensaver name you can trust by filename alone. MITRE documents the built-in screensaver executable as scrnsave.scr, normally under C:WindowsSystem32 (and C:WindowssysWOW64 on 64-bit Windows). A separate scr.exe may be a legitimate third-party utility, a renamed program, or malware. CISA, the FBI and the U.S. Department of Energy documented a threat-actor screenshot utility called scr.exe, while a 2001 CERT report described the W32/Goner worm copying itself as scr.exe and creating startup persistence.
Do not launch, delete or replace the file until you have checked its full path, origin, digital signature, hash, parent process, persistence settings and Microsoft Defender findings. The workflow below shows how to investigate safely and what to do when Windows reports an error.

What is scr.exe?
scr.exe is an ambiguous filename, not a reliable identifier for one Windows component. The documented Windows screensaver file is scrnsave.scr, not a generic scr.exe. That difference matters because Windows treats files ending in .scr as executable programs, so a file with a screensaver-looking name can run code, establish persistence or deliver another payload.
The normal Windows screensaver file
MITRE’s Windows reference path for scrnsave.scr is C:WindowsSystem32; 64-bit installations may also contain the corresponding file in C:WindowssysWOW64. Those paths and the scrnsave.scr name are useful comparison points, but they do not make every file in a Windows directory safe. A file called scr.exe is not validated merely because it appears in a system directory.

Why the name appears in security reports
A CISA, FBI and DOE joint advisory described “the tool scr.exe” as a screenshot utility used by threat actors. The advisory linked the tool with scheduled execution and PsExec activity to capture screens across systems. Separately, a historical CERT incident report from 2001 documented the W32/Goner worm copying itself into a Windows system directory as scr.exe and adding startup persistence. Those incidents involve different software, so neither proves that your particular file is malicious; they do show why the name deserves verification.
What the extension tells you
A .scr file is executable, not a harmless image or configuration document. Opening one from an unexpected email, download, archive or chat attachment can start a program. NCC-CSIRT’s advisory dated 2026-09-29 describes malicious .scr files being used to deliver remote-management tools and recommends blocking their execution, quarantining affected endpoints and hunting for unauthorized RMM software when such activity is found.
Is scr.exe safe?
You cannot answer that from the filename. A known application may install a screenshot or screensaver helper, but an unexpected copy, a mismatched signature, suspicious command-line arguments, persistence changes or a Defender detection should be treated as a security investigation.
Check the exact path
In Task Manager, right-click the process and choose Open file location, or use the file’s Properties dialog to record the complete path. Note whether it is in a user download folder, a temporary directory, an application folder you recognize, or an unexpected copy in a Windows directory. Compare any screensaver claim with MITRE’s documented scrnsave.scr locations rather than assuming that scr.exe is equivalent.
Check publisher, version and hash
Right-click the file, select Properties, and inspect Digital Signatures and Details. Record the signer, product name, file description, version and original filename. A familiar icon is not evidence of authenticity, and the absence of a signature is not by itself proof of malware. Calculate a SHA-256 hash before moving or deleting the file so that your security team can identify the exact binary:
Get-FileHash -Algorithm SHA256 -LiteralPath 'C:pathtoscr.exe'
Compare the publisher and hash with documentation or support information for the application that supposedly installed it. Do not rely on a filename match.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Check origin and user action
Write down when the file appeared, what you downloaded or installed at that time, whether it arrived as an email or chat attachment, and which account or installer created it. A file that appeared immediately after installing a named screenshot utility has a different starting context from one delivered by an unsolicited attachment or a script.

Check the parent process and command line
In Task Manager’s Details tab, inspect the process and any related script, installer or command window. The command line can reveal whether the file was launched by a scheduled task, a script interpreter, an installer or a remote-management component. If you need a process relationship record, PowerShell can list process IDs and parent IDs:
Get-CimInstance Win32_Process | Select-Object Name,ProcessId,ParentProcessId,CommandLine
Match the ParentProcessId to the parent process and save the output. An unexplained script, encoded command, temporary-directory launcher or remote tool is a reason to stop investigating on the live network and involve security staff.
Check persistence indicators
MITRE identifies these screensaver-related values as settings adversaries can manipulate for persistence: HKCUControl PanelDesktopSCRNSAVE.exe, ScreenSaveActive, ScreenSaverIsSecure and ScreenSaveTimeout. Review them only after recording their current values. You can display the key from an elevated or standard Command Prompt with:
reg query 'HKCUControl PanelDesktop' /v SCRNSAVE.exe
reg query 'HKCUControl PanelDesktop' /v ScreenSaveActive
reg query 'HKCUControl PanelDesktop' /v ScreenSaverIsSecure
reg query 'HKCUControl PanelDesktop' /v ScreenSaveTimeout
A value pointing to an unexpected executable, especially one in a temporary or user-download directory, is suspicious. Do not change registry entries blindly; preserve them for investigation and remove persistence only after the responsible file and application are understood.
Check security findings
Microsoft advises obtaining software from trusted sources, keeping antivirus current, uninstalling unwanted software and running a full Microsoft Defender scan. A Defender detection, repeated quarantine, or a file that returns after removal raises the priority of the investigation. If unwanted software persists, Microsoft recommends Microsoft Defender Offline, which scans outside the normal Windows session.
| Evidence to compare | What a lower-risk case may look like | What requires investigation |
|---|---|---|
| Path | A recognized application’s installation folder, with a documented reason for the file | A download or temporary folder, an unexpected system-directory copy, or a path launched by a script |
| Identity | Publisher, product, version and hash match the software you intentionally installed | Missing or mismatched identity information, an unexpected signer, or a hash no one can explain |
| Origin | Created by a known installer or update at a time you can account for | Arrived as an unsolicited attachment, archive, script or unexplained download |
| Execution | Started by the expected application with a normal command line | Started by a scheduled task, script, encoded command, PsExec or an unauthorized remote-management tool |
| Persistence | Screensaver settings point to a known screensaver you selected | SCRNSAVE.exe or related settings point to an unknown executable, or the file recreates startup entries |
| Security scan | No detection and no unexplained recurrence after a full scan | Defender detection, repeated quarantine, reinfection or other endpoint alerts |
Why is scr.exe running?
The reason may be an application you installed, a screensaver configuration, a scheduled task or malicious persistence. Identify the launch path and parent process before deciding that it is either normal or an infection.
Possible legitimate causes
- A third-party screenshot, capture or screensaver application may use a filename that resembles the Windows screensaver extension.
- An application installer or updater may launch its helper briefly and then exit.
- A screensaver setting may start a legitimate program after the configured inactivity timeout.
These explanations are credible only when the path, publisher, hash and parent application agree with the software you knowingly installed.

Possible suspicious causes
- A scheduled task launches the file at logon, at a timer or after user inactivity.
- A script or command shell starts it from a temporary or download directory.
- A malicious
.scrattachment executes a payload or installs remote-management software. - A copied file uses the name
scr.exeto blend into a Windows directory or to resemble a screensaver component.
The CISA/FBI/DOE advisory specifically described scheduled execution and PsExec use with a screenshot utility named scr.exe. That report does not make every running process with this name malicious, but it makes unexplained screen-capture behavior a high-priority signal.
How do I fix scr.exe errors or alerts on Windows?
Use this order: preserve evidence, prevent further execution, scan, remove the responsible software or persistence, and restore only from a trusted source. Do not download a replacement scr.exe from a random DLL or software site.
- Stop launching the file.
If it came from an attachment, download, archive or script, do not double-click it again. Do not open it merely to see what it does. If it is running, note the process ID, path and command line before ending the process; on a potentially compromised managed computer, let your security team decide whether terminating it would destroy useful evidence.
- Preserve the identifying details.
Record the full path, file name, creation and modification times, signer, version information, SHA-256 hash, parent process and command line. Save screenshots or text exports of the relevant Task Manager, Properties, scheduled-task and registry information. This prevents a later cleanup action from erasing the facts needed to determine whether the file was legitimate.

If the file was unexpected, came from an attachment, contacted unknown systems, captured screens or installed remote-management software, disconnect the computer from Wi-Fi or Ethernet if doing so is safe and permitted. On a managed device, contact the organization’s security team immediately. NCC-CSIRT recommends endpoint quarantine and hunting for rogue RMM software in malicious
.scrscenarios. - Run a current Microsoft Defender full scan.
Open Windows Security, choose Virus & threat protection, select Scan options, choose Full scan, and start it. Allow quarantine or removal only after you have preserved the path and hash. Microsoft says Defender Antivirus attempts to block malware before it infects the device, but a clean result does not make an unexplained file automatically legitimate.
- Use Microsoft Defender Offline when the problem persists.
If the file returns, cannot be removed, or unwanted software continues after the full scan, open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Scan options, select Microsoft Defender Offline scan, save your work and start the scan. Windows restarts to perform the check outside the normal desktop session. Follow your organization’s incident-response instructions before restarting a business computer, because a reboot can affect volatile evidence.

Please review EULA and Privacy policy. - Review startup entries and scheduled tasks.
Check Settings > Apps > Startup and the Startup tab in Task Manager for entries associated with the file or its parent application. Open Task Scheduler and inspect tasks created around the file’s arrival, paying attention to actions that run from temporary folders, user profiles or script interpreters. Disable a suspicious task only after recording its name, trigger, action and author; on a managed device, have the security team collect that information.
- Inspect screensaver settings and registry persistence.
Review the four MITRE-listed values under
HKCUControl PanelDesktop:SCRNSAVE.exe,ScreenSaveActive,ScreenSaverIsSecureandScreenSaveTimeout. IfSCRNSAVE.exepoints to an unknown path, preserve the value and investigate the responsible program rather than merely changing the timeout. A screensaver setting can be a persistence mechanism, so removing the visible symptom without removing the payload is incomplete. - Restore only from a trusted, version-matched source.
If a recognized application reports that its helper is missing or corrupt, repair or reinstall that application using its official installer and the correct Windows architecture. If a verified Windows component is damaged, use Windows’ own component-repair options or a trusted, version-matched installation source. Never download a standalone
scr.exefrom an unverified website, and do not copy one from another PC merely because the filenames match. - Restart and verify the result.
After cleanup or repair, restart when your incident-response process permits it. Confirm that the unexplained task, startup entry, registry value or process no longer returns, then run another Defender scan. If the error or alert reappears, stop repeating deletions and escalate; recurrence can indicate persistence, a still-installed parent application or reinfection.

What if Windows says scr.exe is missing, corrupt or unable to start?
First determine which application is displaying the message. Because scr.exe is not the documented name of the built-in Windows screensaver, a missing-file error may belong to a third-party program, a damaged installation or malware that was partially removed.
A named application shows the error
Record the application’s name and installation path, then check its publisher and release documentation. If the application is expected and trusted, use its own repair or reinstall option. Download the installer only from the developer’s trusted distribution channel, and rescan the replacement before running it.

The message appears after a suspicious detection
Do not restore the quarantined file simply to make the error disappear. Complete a full Defender scan, use Defender Offline if the unwanted software persists, inspect startup and scheduled-task entries, and check for unauthorized remote-management software. A missing malicious file is usually preferable to an unverified replacement.
The error appears during screensaver activation
Check which screensaver is selected in Windows settings and whether its executable path is known. Compare the file with the documented scrnsave.scr name and system directories. If a custom screensaver points to scr.exe, identify the software that installed it before changing the setting or deleting the file.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Can I delete scr.exe?
There is no safe yes-or-no answer based only on the name. Deleting an unknown file can remove a malicious payload, but it can also break a legitimate application, destroy evidence or leave its scheduled task and registry persistence behind.
- Do not delete it yet when it arrived as an attachment, runs from a temporary or download folder, has an unexplained parent process, changes screensaver settings, or triggers a security alert. Preserve the hash and path, isolate the device when appropriate, and involve security staff.
- Do not assume it is Windows merely because it is under
C:WindowsSystem32. MITRE’s documented built-in file isscrnsave.scr; an unexpectedscr.exestill needs identity and behavior checks. - Removal may be reasonable after you have identified the owning application, completed the required scan, and confirmed that the file is unwanted. Uninstall the owning application or use its official cleanup process rather than deleting only the executable.
When should I escalate a scr.exe investigation?
Contact your organization’s security team or an incident-response professional when the file executed from an attachment, captured screens, contacted other systems, used PsExec, created scheduled or startup persistence, installed an unauthorized RMM tool, returned after removal, or appeared on multiple endpoints. Keep the device isolated according to policy and provide the path, hash, timestamps, parent process, command line, registry values, scheduled-task details and Defender results.
For a one-off error on a personal PC with a known application, the application’s official support channel may be enough. For unexplained execution or repeated reinfection, treating the event as a possible compromise is safer than repeatedly replacing files.
After you complete the manual checks, Outbyte PC Repair can be an optional shortcut for some common Windows problems, including broken system elements, invalid redirects, shared DLL issues, temporary and cache cleanup, settings that add CPU, RAM or disk load, vulnerability checks and an app-crash log. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7 and offers a category-based free trial of at least two days before a paid subscription; results vary, it does not repair every crash, and it complements rather than replaces an antivirus.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Windows normally use scr.exe for its built-in screensaver?
MITRE documents the Windows screensaver executable as scrnsave.scr, not scr.exe. A custom screensaver or third-party utility can use another filename, so identify the installed program and verify its signer before changing anything.
Can I open a .scr attachment if it came from someone I know?
Treat it as an executable attachment, even when the sender appears familiar. Confirm the message through a separate channel and have the file scanned and identified before opening it; a compromised sender account can distribute malicious files.
Will changing the screensaver timeout remove a malicious scr.exe?
No. The timeout is only one setting, and an attacker can use several screensaver values or another scheduled task for persistence. Changing a visible setting without removing the executable and its launch mechanism can leave the compromise in place.
What information should I give support when scr.exe keeps returning?
Provide the exact path, SHA-256 hash, signer and version, creation time, parent process and command line, scheduled-task details, relevant screensaver registry values and Defender scan results. Those details let support distinguish a damaged application from persistence or reinfection without asking you to resend the executable blindly.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIs a clean Defender scan proof that scr.exe is safe?
No. A scan result is one part of the assessment. An unexplained origin, mismatched publisher, suspicious command line or persistence change still warrants investigation even when no current signature detects the file.
