scratch.exe is not one standardized Windows component. The same filename is associated with Scratch 1.4, Borland High-performance C++ development software, and records attributed to the Toshiba Bluetooth Stack. Because those programs use different folders, versions and publishers, the name alone cannot tell you whether a copy is legitimate or malicious.
A copy installed in the expected folder of software you deliberately installed may be normal. A copy in a temporary or unusual directory, one with an unknown publisher, or one downloaded from an unsolicited source deserves investigation before you open it. The safest approach is to identify the parent program, verify the file’s location and signature, scan it with Windows Security, and repair or reinstall that parent program instead of downloading a replacement executable.

What is scratch.exe?
scratch.exe is an executable filename shared by more than one Windows program. File-reference databases associate the name with several unrelated products, including Scratch 1.4, Borland High-performance C++ development software, and entries attributed to the Toshiba Bluetooth Stack. Those records can have different paths, file sizes and metadata, so there is no single “correct” scratch.exe location or universal description.
The filename is therefore an identifier to investigate, not proof of a Windows service or proof of malware. A Scratch installation might place the executable in its own program directory; a development or Bluetooth component can use another directory. Only the complete path, publisher, version, source and security results establish which file you have.

Why the same name can mean different software
Windows allows separate applications to use the same basename. Two products can each ship a file called scratch.exe without sharing code or ownership. A database entry that lists one product does not authenticate every file with that name, and a matching name does not make an unexpected copy safe.
Is scratch.exe safe?
It can be safe when it belongs to an application you intentionally installed and its location and signature make sense for that application. It can also be unsafe when it arrived through a random download, an attachment, a bundled installer or a temporary directory. There is no authoritative infection rate for files named scratch.exe, so a name-only verdict would be misleading.
Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallOutdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down
One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchSigns that support a legitimate file
- The parent application is visible in Installed apps and is software you recognize.
- The full path is inside that application’s expected program folder rather than a user-writable temporary location.
- Properties show a publisher and a digital signature that match the parent application’s vendor.
- The file’s version and creation date fit the installed application.
- Windows Security and SmartScreen do not report a threat, and you obtained the software from its official publisher.
Warning signs that require a pause
- The process starts even though you never installed software that would need it.
- The path is a temporary, downloads or unsolicited-attachment folder, or a directory with a random name.
- Properties have no publisher, an invalid signature or a publisher unrelated to the program you expected.
- Windows Security quarantines or blocks it, or SmartScreen warns about its reputation.
- The file appeared after installing a bundled utility or opening an unexpected document.
Do not launch a suspicious copy merely to see what it does. Keep Windows Security and reputation-based protection enabled while you identify it.
How do I check which scratch.exe I have?
Use the running process, its path and its properties together. A filename search alone can return several unrelated copies.
- Open Task Manager. Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc, choose Processes or Details, and look for
scratch.exe. If it is running, right-click it and choose Open file location. If it is not running, search the drive from File Explorer and inspect each result cautiously. - Read the path. Note the drive, parent folders and nearby files. Compare that location with the program listed in Settings > Apps > Installed apps (Windows 11) or Settings > Apps > Apps & features (Windows 10). A Scratch folder, a legacy development-tool folder and a Bluetooth-software folder imply different owners.
- Inspect Properties. Right-click the file, select Properties, and review General, Details and Digital Signatures. Record the product name, file description, original filename, version, publisher and signature status. An absent signature is a warning, not conclusive proof, because not every legitimate legacy executable is signed.
- Check the source. Ask how the file arrived. Software installed from its publisher’s site is easier to verify than a copy from a file repository, an email or a bundled setup program. Do not run an unverified download to test it.
- Check Windows Security. Open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection. Review Protection history for detections involving the exact path. You can right-click a file in File Explorer and choose Scan with Microsoft Defender when that option is available.
- Record the identity before changing anything. Save the full path, product and publisher details, version and any detection name. These details let you repair the correct parent application and avoid deleting an unrelated executable with the same name.
Using SmartScreen and reputation checks
SmartScreen and Windows reputation-based protection evaluate downloaded apps and files and can block software with a poor or unknown reputation. A warning is a reason to stop and verify the source, not a license to bypass the warning. Microsoft recommends leaving reputation protection enabled, including controls for blocking potentially unwanted apps and downloads.

Why does Windows show a scratch.exe error?
Messages such as “Scratch.exe Application Error,” “Scratch.exe failed,” “Scratch.exe is not a valid Win32 application,” “Scratch.exe is not running,” “Cannot find Scratch.exe,” “Error starting program: Scratch.exe” and “Faulting Application Path: Scratch.exe” describe a failure, not a unique diagnosis.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →| Message or symptom | What it can indicate | First check |
|---|---|---|
| Cannot find scratch.exe or Error starting program | The file was deleted, quarantined, moved, or an uninstall left a startup entry behind. | Identify the parent program and review Windows Security Protection history. |
| Scratch.exe Application Error or Scratch.exe failed | Corruption, an incomplete installation, incompatible components or damage caused by unwanted software. | Check Properties, then repair or reinstall the parent application from its official publisher. |
| Not a valid Win32 application | A wrong-version, truncated or corrupted executable, or a file intended for a different platform. | Do not download another same-named file; replace the parent application’s installation. |
| Scratch.exe is not running | The program may be crashing at launch, blocked by security software, missing dependencies or starting from an obsolete shortcut. | Launch the parent application from its installed shortcut and inspect Protection history and Event Viewer details if available. |
| Faulting Application Path: scratch.exe | Windows recorded the executable as the process that failed; it does not identify why it failed or whether it is malicious. | Use the path and publisher to determine which product owns the file. |
Common underlying causes include a deleted or quarantined file, an interrupted installation, file corruption, a wrong-version executable, a conflict with the parent application, or malware damage. The same message can occur for a legitimate Scratch installation and for an unrelated program that happens to use the same filename.
How do I fix scratch.exe errors safely?
Work from the owning application outward. The sequence below avoids replacing an unknown executable with another unknown executable.
1. Identify and document the parent program
Use the Task Manager path and Properties details from the checks above. Match the product name and publisher with an entry in Installed apps. If no installed application matches, treat the file as untrusted and proceed to the security scan before attempting to open it.
2. Check whether Windows Security removed or isolated it
Open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Protection history. A quarantine event can explain a “Cannot find scratch.exe” message. Read the detection and path carefully; do not restore the file simply because an application now fails. Restore only after you have verified the publisher and source and are confident it is a false positive.

3. Repair the parent application when Windows offers that option
In Settings > Apps > Installed apps, select the owning program, open its menu, and choose Advanced options when present. Use Repair first so Windows can rebuild damaged components without removing your data. Availability and labels vary by application; if no repair command exists, use the program’s own maintenance option or continue to a clean reinstall.
4. Reinstall from the official publisher
Uninstall the identified parent program through Windows Settings or its supplied uninstaller, restart if requested, and obtain the current installer from that publisher’s official download page. For Scratch, use the Scratch publisher’s download page rather than a standalone EXE repository. Install the version intended for your edition of Windows, then test the application from its new shortcut.
Do not copy a replacement scratch.exe into System32, the Windows directory or an application folder. A same-named file may belong to another product, may be an outdated build, or may contain unwanted code. Reinstalling the verified parent program supplies the matching files and configuration.
5. Run a malware scan before and after repair
For a suspicious file, open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Scan options. Start with a Full scan when you need all fixed and removable drives checked. If Windows Security offers Microsoft Defender Offline scan, use it when a threat may be active during normal Windows operation; Windows restarts and scans before the usual desktop loads.
Keep definitions current, allow the scan to finish, and read the result for the exact path. Microsoft notes that removal can require a restart or additional manual steps. Follow those prompts rather than deleting random files yourself.

6. Handle a confirmed detection
If Defender identifies scratch.exe as malware or a potentially unwanted application, choose Quarantine or Remove in Windows Security. Restart when prompted and run another scan. Then inspect startup entries, scheduled tasks and the parent application’s installation for other files that the detection report names. Removing only the visible executable may not remove persistence, so follow the security product’s remediation instructions.
7. Handle a suspected false positive
If the file belongs to software you trust but Windows blocks it, verify the publisher, path, version and download source before taking action. Submit the file through the reporting workflow in Windows Security or the publisher’s support channel. Do not disable protection globally just to make the program launch; keep SmartScreen and reputation-based protections on while the file is evaluated.
8. Remove stale shortcuts and startup references
After uninstalling a program, an old shortcut or startup entry can continue to request a file that no longer exists. Remove the obsolete shortcut from the desktop or Start menu and review Settings > Apps > Startup for an entry tied to the uninstalled program. If the message appears at sign-in after a clean uninstall, identify the exact entry before deleting it; a similarly named item may belong to another application.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Can I delete scratch.exe?
Not safely based on the name alone. First identify its parent application and confirm whether that program is still needed. If it is legitimate, uninstall the parent program or use its repair and removal tools instead of deleting one file; manual deletion can leave broken shortcuts, services or configuration behind.
If Microsoft Defender identifies the file as malware or a potentially unwanted application, let Windows Security quarantine or remove it. Afterward, investigate other affected files and persistence locations and complete any required restart or follow-up scan. If the file is merely an orphan left by software you intentionally removed, delete it only after confirming that no installed program, shortcut or startup entry still references it.

Should I download a replacement scratch.exe?
No. A standalone download cannot tell which product, version or dependencies your computer needs, and a same-named executable can belong to a completely different application. Replacement-EXE sites also make publisher and integrity checks difficult. Reinstall the identified parent program from its official publisher, or restore a verified backup of that application, so the executable and its supporting files match.
What if the error continues after reinstalling?
Recheck the path after reinstalling; Windows may still be launching an older copy from a shortcut or startup entry. Confirm that the repaired program’s version and publisher are the ones you recorded, then review Windows Security Protection history for a new block or quarantine event.
- If only one user account fails, test the application from another account to distinguish a per-user shortcut or profile problem from a damaged installation.
- If the error appears immediately after a security detection, complete the recommended restart and Offline scan before reinstalling.
- If multiple unrelated applications begin failing, treat that pattern as a broader Windows or security incident rather than a single scratch.exe problem.
- If the application is legacy software, check the publisher’s documented Windows compatibility requirements before forcing compatibility settings or replacing files.
Keep the original error text, full path, publisher, version and Defender result when contacting the software publisher. Those details are more useful than reporting only the filename.
If you want an optional shortcut after trying the manual checks, Outbyte PC Repair can address more than 100 common Windows issues where possible, including broken system elements, invalid redirects and shared DLL problems, while also offering cleanup, settings adjustments, vulnerability checks and an app-crash log. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7; its free trial is category-based for at least two days before a paid subscription, and it complements antivirus software rather than replacing it. Results vary, and no repair utility fixes every crash.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the capitalization of Scratch.exe matter in Windows?
Windows normally treats filenames as case-insensitive, so scratch.exe and Scratch.exe usually refer to the same file. Capitalization can still matter when a script, log or support ticket compares text exactly, so record the spelling shown by the application and security report.
Why are there several scratch.exe files on one computer?
Different applications can install an executable with the same basename, and an old uninstaller may leave an orphaned copy behind. Compare each copy’s full path, publisher and product details before deciding which one belongs to software you use.
Can System Restore undo a scratch.exe problem?
System Restore can roll back system files, drivers and application settings to an earlier restore point, but it is not a substitute for a malware scan and does not guarantee recovery of a deliberately removed file. If you use it, scan afterward and reinstall the owning application from a verified source if the error remains.
Should I turn off SmartScreen to run an unknown scratch.exe?
No. Turning off reputation protection removes a useful warning without establishing who made the file. Verify the publisher and source, submit a suspected false positive through Windows Security, and keep the protection enabled while you investigate.
