screensaver.exe is not enough information to identify a legitimate Windows component. Microsoft Windows’ documented built-in screensaver is scrnsave.scr, normally stored in C:WindowsSystem32 (and, on 64-bit Windows, C:WindowssysWOW64). Because screensavers are executable Portable Executable files, a file called screensaver.exe may be a third-party program, a renamed file, or malicious software. Check its full path, digital signature, registry setting and security-scan results before deleting it. The repair sequence is: identify the file, scan Windows, repair components with DISM and SFC, then investigate drivers, firmware, hardware or boot damage if crashes continue.
What is screensaver.exe on Windows?
Windows screensavers are programs launched after a configured period of user inactivity. MITRE ATT&CK describes them as Portable Executable files that use the .scr extension, not as a single universal screensaver.exe component. The documented Windows screensaver application is scrnsave.scr.

On a typical installation, the built-in file is found at:

Other legitimate screensavers installed by Windows or third-party software also normally use the .scr extension. A literal screensaver.exe therefore needs context. Its filename alone neither proves that it is part of Windows nor proves that it is malware.

Why does a screensaver file behave like an executable?
A screensaver file is a Portable Executable (PE), the same broad executable format used by many Windows programs. Windows launches it with screensaver-related parameters when the display is idle, when you preview it, or when you open its configuration dialog. That executable nature is useful for legitimate animation, but it also gives an attacker a way to run code when a user is inactive.
Is screensaver.exe safe, or could it be a virus?
Safety depends on the file’s location, signature, registry configuration and scan results. A file outside the Windows directories, a screensaver setting that points into a user profile or temporary folder, an unsigned executable, or a file detected by Microsoft Defender deserves investigation rather than automatic deletion.

Evidence that raises the risk
- The executable path is a download, temporary, roaming-profile or otherwise unexpected directory.
- The registry value
SCRNSAVE.exepoints to that unexpected path or to a file you did not install. - The file has no valid publisher signature, or its signature does not match the software that installed it.
- Microsoft Defender reports the file or related behavior.
- The file appeared at the same time as unexplained startup entries, browser changes, repeated security alerts or other system changes.
Do not infer safety from a familiar-looking icon or a filename that resembles Windows. Conversely, do not remove a file solely because it is called screensaver.exe; first record its path and preserve the evidence.
How do I check the exact screensaver.exe path and registry value?
Start with identification. Knowing which file Windows is launching prevents you from repairing or deleting the wrong program.

- Capture the error context. Write down the complete message, the time it appears and whether it occurs during login, after inactivity, while opening Screensaver Settings, or during a preview. If Task Manager, an error dialog or Event Viewer shows a path, copy it exactly.
- Inspect Task Manager. Press
Ctrl+Shift+Esc, select the relevant process if it is running, right-click it and choose Open file location. If the process has already closed, use the path recorded in the error dialog or Event Viewer instead. - Check file properties. Right-click the executable, choose Properties, and review the General, Details and Digital Signatures tabs. Record the publisher, file version and location. A signature that is absent or invalid is a warning, not a standalone malware verdict.
- Inspect the current-user setting. Press
Win+R, typeregedit, and navigate toHKEY_CURRENT_USERControl PanelDesktop. Read theSCRNSAVE.exevalue without changing it. Export that key first if you need a backup. - Compare the path with the documented component. The built-in file is
scrnsave.scrinC:WindowsSystem32(andC:WindowssysWOW64on 64-bit Windows). A different location may be legitimate for an installed screensaver, but it requires confirmation from the installer and a security scan.
Registry editing can damage a profile if values are changed carelessly. For diagnosis, read and export the key; do not delete values merely to make an error disappear.
What should I do if the file looks suspicious?
Scan before replacing, renaming or downloading any executable. Microsoft recommends current security protection, a full Microsoft Defender Antivirus scan and Microsoft Defender Offline when unwanted software may persist.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection, install any available security-intelligence update, then choose Scan options.
- Run Full scan. It examines substantially more of the system than a quick scan and can take a long time on a large drive.
- If suspicious behavior continues or Defender cannot remove the item while Windows is running, return to Scan options and choose Microsoft Defender Offline scan. Save open work first; Windows restarts and scans before the normal desktop loads.
Do not download a replacement screensaver.exe from an unofficial file site. If a legitimate third-party screensaver is missing, obtain it from the original publisher or reinstall the software that supplied it.
How do I repair Windows files that may be causing screensaver.exe errors?
For missing or corrupted Windows components, Microsoft’s order is DISM first and SFC second. DISM repairs the component store that SFC uses as a source for protected-file repairs.
Run DISM from an elevated Command Prompt
- Open Start, type
Command Prompt, right-click it and select Run as administrator. Approve the User Account Control prompt. - Run this command exactly:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /RestorehealthWait for DISM to finish. The process can pause at a percentage for several minutes; do not close the window solely because progress appears unchanged.

Run System File Checker after DISM
- In the same elevated window, run:
sfc /scannow- Let the scan reach 100 percent. Restart Windows when it reports that repairs were completed, then test the screensaver again.
Microsoft explains that sfc /scannow scans protected system files and replaces corrupted files with a cached copy. The result matters:
- “Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.” Protected files were not the detected cause; continue with driver, hardware, update or software checks if the crash remains.
- “Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them.” Restart and reproduce the original action to see whether the error is gone.
- “Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them.” Review the CBS log for the exact files before attempting any manual replacement.
- SFC could not perform the requested operation. Microsoft advises running the scan in Safe Mode and checking that the required WinSxS temporary folders exist.
Manually replacing a system file is higher risk than DISM and SFC. Only use a known-good file that matches the Windows edition, architecture and build, and keep a recovery plan before changing protected files.
Why does screensaver.exe keep crashing even after file repair?
A recurring crash does not prove that the screensaver process is the root cause. Microsoft’s stop-code guidance notes that a user-mode process can expose a deeper problem involving a driver, firmware, hardware or the operating system.
Check recent changes first
- Install pending Windows updates, then restart.
- Identify graphics, display, chipset, audio, USB and power-management driver changes made shortly before the crashes.
- Update BIOS or firmware only with the device manufacturer’s instructions and power requirements.
- Temporarily remove or disable a newly installed screensaver, display utility, overlay or system-tuning program to test whether the failure stops.
- Confirm that the system drive has adequate free space for updates, temporary files and crash data.
Use Windows diagnostics for hardware symptoms
If the crash is accompanied by a blue screen, freezes, display corruption, unexpected restarts or application-wide instability, run the relevant memory and hardware tests supplied by Windows or the device manufacturer. Record the stop code, failing module and timestamp. Event Viewer entries and crash dumps can show whether the same driver or module appears repeatedly.

Can I disable or delete screensaver.exe?
You can disable the screensaver feature without deleting executable files. Open Settings, search for screen saver, select Change screen saver, choose (None), and apply the change. This prevents the configured screensaver from launching while leaving Windows components available for other functions.
Deleting a file is appropriate only after you have established that it belongs to an unwanted third-party program, completed a security scan and confirmed that no legitimate application needs it. Do not delete scrnsave.scr from the Windows directories to address an ambiguous screensaver.exe error. If a suspicious file is detected, follow Defender’s quarantine or removal workflow and keep the detection name for later review.
What if Windows will not start or ordinary repair fails?
Escalate recovery only after path verification, scanning and component repair have failed or Windows cannot boot normally.
Use Startup Repair
Enter Windows Recovery Environment by holding Shift while selecting Restart from the power menu, or by allowing Windows to enter recovery after repeated failed starts. Choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Repair. Follow the prompts and record any message that names a boot file or configuration problem.
Reinstall the current Windows version on Windows 11
Microsoft documents a Windows Update recovery option that reinstalls the current Windows 11 version to repair system files and components while preserving apps, files and settings. Availability depends on the Windows 11 release and device configuration. Open Settings > System > Recovery and look for the option to fix problems using Windows Update. Read the displayed prerequisites and keep a current backup before starting.

How can I verify a screensaver file’s digital signature?
Right-click the file, choose Properties, open Digital Signatures, select the signer and choose Details. Windows should report whether the signature is valid; an unknown or invalid signer means you should investigate the installer and scan result rather than trusting the filename.
Will setting the screensaver to None fix a crash permanently?
It can stop the trigger while you troubleshoot, but it does not repair a damaged component, driver or unwanted registry entry. Re-enable the feature only after the underlying cause has been identified and tested.
