smile.exe is not a single, standard Windows component. The filename has been used by unrelated programs, an old worm, games and files classified as malware, so the name alone cannot tell you whether a copy is safe. Identify the exact path, publisher, digital signature, hash and parent application before deleting it. A Gridinsoft sample was classified as an unsigned Trojan, while a different MalwareBazaar sample had no threat verdict and clean results from the vendors listed there. That conflict is why the safest response is evidence-led: inspect the file, scan it with Microsoft Defender, quarantine confirmed threats, and repair or reinstall only the verified application that owns a legitimate copy.
What is smile.exe?
smile.exe is an ambiguous executable filename, not a universally defined Windows process. Different software has used the same basename, and the files can have completely different code, publishers and purposes. A copy in a game folder is not automatically related to a copy in a user profile or startup folder.

Known uses and references include:
- Legacy Master Hacker executable: Solvusoft documents a 2001
SMILE.EXEassociated with Master Hacker. Its historical error list includes “Cannot find SMILE.EXE,” “SMILE.EXE not found” and “SMILE.EXE is not a valid Win32 application.” Those messages describe that application, not a Windows-wide component. - Historical worm filename: Greatis describes I-Worm.Smilex copying itself into startup locations and replacing or deleting system and antivirus files. A file with this name in an unexpected startup location therefore deserves immediate scrutiny.
- Webshots component: A Webshots reference places
Smile.exein the Smile Desktop installation directory. That is application-specific evidence, not proof that every Webshots-era copy is safe or that every copy belongs to Webshots. - Independent game: An itch.io Windows game named
SMILE.EXEsays it may restart itself and open internal images, and warns that antivirus products can flag unusual behavior. A game executable should be evaluated in the folder and package from which it was obtained. - Modern analysis sample: A Triage report shows a user-profile
Smile.exelaunched with-updateand performing system and language discovery. User-profile execution and update switches are clues to investigate, not a verdict by themselves.
No authoritative statistic establishes how common malicious smile.exe files are. Available records are individual samples with their own hashes and metadata, so do not generalize one scan result to every file with this name.
Is smile.exe safe?
You cannot answer safely from the filename. Treat a copy as untrusted until its location, publisher, signature, hash and owning application agree with software you intentionally installed.

Why reputation results can conflict
Gridinsoft records one sample classified as Trojan.Win64.Agent.bot!s1 and lacking a digital signature. MalwareBazaar records a different smile.exe with no threat verdict and clean results from the vendors it listed. These are different binaries; a clean result for one hash does not clear another file with the same basename.
Evidence that raises confidence
- The path is inside the verified installation directory of a program you recognize, rather than a temporary, startup or random user-profile folder.
- The file has a valid signature from the expected publisher, and Windows shows that the signature is intact.
- Its cryptographic hash matches a hash published by the software’s official vendor for the same release.
- The parent process and launch arguments match normal use of that application.
Evidence that lowers confidence
- An unsigned file, an unknown publisher, a misspelled directory or a location that appears only after an unexpected download.
- Automatic relaunch after reboot, a hidden startup entry, or behavior unrelated to the program you installed.
- Defender detections, repeated quarantine events or network and system-discovery activity you cannot explain.
How do I check which smile.exe is running?
Record evidence before stopping or deleting anything. The same filename can be harmless in one directory and dangerous in another.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Open Task Manager with
Ctrl+Shift+Esc. On the Details tab, locatesmile.exe, right-click it and choose Open file location. Copy the complete path. - In Task Manager, use View > Select columns and enable Command line if available. Note switches such as
-update, and identify the parent process in the process tree or with a process-inspection utility. - Right-click the file in File Explorer, choose Properties, and inspect Details for product and publisher information. On Digital Signatures, select a signature and choose Details; a valid signature should report that it is OK and name the expected signer.
- Calculate a hash from an elevated PowerShell window, replacing the path with the one you recorded:
Get-FileHash -LiteralPath "C:fullpathsmile.exe" -Algorithm SHA256
Compare the resulting SHA-256 value only with a hash published by the application’s verified vendor or a trusted incident-response source for that exact file. - Write down the file size, creation date, signer, hash, parent process and installation source. This record lets you distinguish a reappearing copy from a legitimate reinstall and gives support staff useful evidence.
How do I scan smile.exe with Windows security tools?
Use Microsoft’s built-in protections before attempting manual deletion. Scanning first preserves the option to quarantine and undo a mistaken action.
Run a targeted scan
- Right-click the file in File Explorer and choose Scan with Microsoft Defender (or Scan with Microsoft Defender from the Windows Security integration).
- Open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Scan options and run a Full scan. A full scan checks all accessible files and running locations, so it can take substantially longer than a targeted scan.
- Review Protection history. If Defender identifies the file, choose Quarantine or Remove as offered. Microsoft warns that allowing an uncertain item can expose data, personal information or the device to risk.
Use Defender Offline when it returns
If the executable comes back after a reboot, or security software cannot remove it while Windows is running, choose Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Scan options > Microsoft Defender Offline scan > Scan now. Windows restarts into a separate environment, which can inspect files that hide or relaunch during a normal session. Save work first and keep the device connected to power.

Block potentially unwanted applications
In Windows Security > App & browser control > Reputation-based protection, turn on both Check apps and files and the controls for potentially unwanted app blocking, including Block apps and Block downloads where those labels are available in your Windows edition. Microsoft recommends leaving both blocking controls enabled.
Can I delete smile.exe?
Delete it only after you know which application owns it and have completed a scan. Removing a legitimate executable can break the parent program, while deleting only one component of an unwanted program can leave its startup mechanism behind.
If the file is confirmed malicious or unwanted
- Quarantine it through Defender and record the detection name and path from Protection history.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps (or Apps & features on older Windows) and uninstall the unrecognized program installed with it.
- Check Task Manager > Startup apps for an entry tied to that program and disable it. Do not disable random Microsoft entries merely because their names are unfamiliar.
- Restart, run another Defender scan and verify that the file and its startup entry do not return. If they do, run Defender Offline and investigate scheduled tasks or services associated with the same unrecognized software.
If the file belongs to a program you trust
Do not replace it with a download from a generic EXE or DLL website. Use the program’s own uninstaller, repair option or official installer, then scan the freshly installed file and verify its publisher and signature. The reused basename means a random replacement could be a different, unsigned binary.
Why do I get a smile.exe error?
The wording and the file path usually indicate whether Windows is dealing with an orphaned startup reference, a damaged installation or a suspicious executable.

“Cannot find SMILE.EXE” or “SMILE.EXE not found”
These messages commonly appear when an application or startup entry still points to a file that was moved, quarantined or removed. They are documented for the historical Master Hacker program, but the same wording can arise from any program that retained a stale reference.
- Use Task Manager’s Startup apps list and Settings > Apps to identify the program named in the message.
- If you recognize it, repair or reinstall that program from its official source so its startup entry and files are recreated consistently.
- If you do not recognize it, uninstall the associated application, disable its startup entry and perform a full Defender scan followed by an Offline scan if it returns.
“SMILE.EXE is not a valid Win32 application”
Windows shows this when the file is not a valid executable for the system or is damaged, incomplete or mismatched. A corrupted download, a wrong architecture, an interrupted update or malware can all produce the message; the text alone does not identify the cause.
- Check the path and signature, then scan the file.
- For a legitimate application, remove it through the official uninstaller and install the correct Windows release again.
- For an unknown file, quarantine it and remove the program that installed it rather than trying to repair the binary with a replacement download.
The error appears at every startup
An orphaned Run key, startup shortcut, scheduled task or service may be launching a file that no longer exists. First remove the owning application through Windows settings. If the entry remains, inspect Task Manager > Startup apps and use Microsoft’s supported startup and security tools; avoid deleting registry values whose ownership you cannot establish.
What should I do if a smile.exe pop-up asks me to call?
Close the browser or window without calling. A message that presents smile.exe as a Windows error and supplies a phone number is a support scam, not normal Windows diagnostics. Microsoft’s guidance is explicit: “Microsoft error and warning messages never include phone numbers.”

Choose the least destructive method that matches the evidence. Quarantine and an official reinstall are reversible and preserve provenance; generic downloads and blind deletion do neither.

| Microsoft Defender full scan | Uses Microsoft’s current threat intelligence | Broader than a single-file check; scans accessible system locations | Can detect related files, but a persistent relaunch may require Offline scanning | Quarantine can be reviewed in Protection history |
| Microsoft Defender Offline | Same Microsoft security ecosystem, running outside normal Windows | Useful against files that hide or relaunch during a normal session | Best of the listed options for pre-boot persistence | Quarantine actions remain reviewable |
| Microsoft Malicious Software Removal Tool | Microsoft utility with a narrower, specific-malware scope | Not comprehensive antivirus protection | Limited to the threats it targets | Follow its removal report; do not treat a clean result as a universal clearance |
| Generic EXE/DLL download | Low: the basename is reused across unrelated binaries | Unknown until independently scanned | Does not address the original startup or application source | Low and potentially harmful |
Microsoft describes the Malicious Software Removal Tool as able to remove specific prevalent malware, but also says it is not a substitute for comprehensive antivirus protection. Use it only as an additional, targeted measure rather than as the sole test of a suspicious smile.exe.
What information should I give technical support?
Send the complete path, SHA-256 hash, file size, publisher and signature status, detection name, parent process, command-line arguments, installation source and the exact error text. Include whether the file returns after reboot and which scans have already run. Do not email or upload a potentially sensitive executable unless the support organization provides a trusted, purpose-specific process.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does smile.exe belong to Windows by default?
No. There is no single Microsoft Windows component identified solely by that filename. Any legitimate copy should be explainable by a separately installed application, with a matching path and publisher.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →How can I compare two smile.exe files safely?
Compare their full paths, SHA-256 hashes, sizes, signatures and parent applications rather than their names. Different hashes mean they are different binaries, so one file’s reputation result cannot be transferred to the other.
Will restoring smile.exe from the Recycle Bin fix the error?
Only if you have already confirmed that the deleted file belonged to a trusted application and was removed accidentally. Restoring an unknown executable can reintroduce a threat; repair or reinstall the verified application instead.
What if Defender reports no threat but the program still behaves strangely?
A clean scan is not proof of identity or desirable behavior. Recheck the publisher, signature, hash, startup persistence and the program’s download source, then uninstall software you cannot explain and seek help from the legitimate vendor.
