Snapdragon Game Super Resolution (GSR) is Qualcomm’s graphics upscaling technology: a game renders fewer pixels, then GSR reconstructs a higher-resolution image. That can free GPU capacity for higher output resolution, faster frame rates or lower power use—but the result depends on how a developer integrates and configures it. GSR is not a universal phone setting, and owning a Snapdragon device alone does not ensure a game supports it.
What Snapdragon GSR does
Instead of rendering every pixel at the screen’s output resolution, a game can render at a lower resolution and upscale that image. Qualcomm’s original GSR is a single-pass, spatial-aware technique designed by Snapdragon Studios and optimized for Adreno GPUs. It combines scaling with sharpening to recover detail from the lower-resolution image.

Qualcomm contrasts GSR with basic bilinear interpolation, which can blur edges and details, and says its technique was designed for mobile rendering pipelines where temporal inputs were not then common. Its 2024 developer explanation describes a 12-tap Lanczos-like scaling filter and adaptive sharpening. Qualcomm also says GSR uses fewer registers, texture samples and arithmetic instructions than alternative approaches and reduces bandwidth associated with multiple upscaling passes; those are Qualcomm’s comparative claims, not independent benchmarks.

Qualcomm summarized the original approach this way: “Snapdragon GSR is a single pass spatial aware super resolution technique developed by the Qualcomm Snapdragon Studios to achieve optimal super scaling quality at the best performance and power savings.”

GSR 1 and GSR 2 are different techniques
| Technology | How it works | Developer implications |
|---|---|---|
| GSR 1 | Spatial, single-pass upscaling and sharpening using the current image. | Qualcomm documents an OpenGL implementation for Android apps on Snapdragon mobile platforms, and OpenGL or DirectX implementations for Windows on Snapdragon apps. |
| GSR 2 | Temporal anti-aliasing and upscaling. It uses low-resolution color, depth and motion-vector inputs, with information from prior frames. | Qualcomm describes a convert pass and an upscale pass, with sharpening available as an optional pass. Multiple implementation variants are documented. |
Because GSR 2 uses prior-frame information, Qualcomm says it can improve image quality over GSR 1’s current-frame approach. Temporal techniques can also produce artifacts such as ghosting; Qualcomm’s GSR 2 materials say the implementation aims to reduce aliasing, flicker and ghosting, not eliminate them.
Qualcomm also describes Meta Quest Super Resolution as a VR-specific derivative developed with Meta for Quest 3. That is a separate context from assuming standard GSR support across phones or games.
What performance and battery benefits are—and are not—promised
Lower-resolution rendering can create GPU headroom. A developer may spend it on a sharper output image, a higher frame rate, or reduced power consumption. These are alternative ways to use the headroom, not automatic benefits that arrive together. Actual results depend on the game’s implementation, the device and its workload.

Qualcomm’s 2023 announcement illustrates upscaling 540p to 1080p and discusses examples such as 1080p-to-4K output. It also suggests a game running at 30 FPS could reach 60+ FPS. These are Qualcomm’s illustrations and claims, not guaranteed results for arbitrary titles or hardware. The cited material gives no independently established general battery-life uplift for a typical player.
How to read Qualcomm’s GSR 2 timing figures
In its 2024 article, Qualcomm reports measurements for GSR 2 on Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 at maximum GPU frequency, with an output target of 1260×2800. The figures below are for the two-pass fragment-shader variant. They measure the upscaling implementation, not the full game’s frame time or a phone’s battery life.
| Input resolution | Scale to 1260×2800 | Qualcomm-reported timing |
|---|---|---|
| 630×1400 | 2× | 0.905 ms |
| 740×1648 | 1.7× | 1.024 ms |
| 840×1866 | 1.5× | 1.107 ms |
Qualcomm characterizes an optimized fragment-shader variant as having a cost of about 1 ms in its stated test context. These vendor-reported implementation timings should not be treated as a universal result: GPU, resolution, implementation and game workload matter.

Does your phone or game support GSR?
Support depends on software integration. Qualcomm’s materials provide source code, samples and engine integration resources, including Unreal Engine integration and Vulkan/OpenGL examples for GSR 2. The public repository lists GSR 1.0.0 on 2023-06-29, GSR 1.1.0 on 2024-01-29, and GSR 2.0.0 on 2024-10-21, under a BSD 3-clause license. Public developer materials demonstrate that developers can access the technology; they do not establish broad commercial game adoption.

The cited materials do not provide a complete current list of games or consumer phones that use it. Therefore, a Snapdragon-branded processor by itself is not proof that a particular title supports GSR; check the game’s own feature information rather than expecting a system-wide toggle.
