sodium.exe is not a uniquely identified Windows system component. The name can be associated with CaffeineMC’s Sodium Minecraft rendering project, an unrelated Windows program that also exports a file named Sodium.exe, or an unknown bundled application. The filename alone cannot establish that a copy is legitimate or malicious.
Before running, deleting, or allowing it through a warning, inspect its complete path, parent application, publisher, digital signature, download source, and Microsoft Defender results. If the file is connected to Minecraft Sodium, most crashes are compatibility problems involving the Minecraft version, mod loader, launcher, or graphics driver rather than evidence that the filename itself is dangerous.

A Minecraft installation can therefore contain files associated with Sodium, but the presence of a process called sodium.exe in a Windows process list does not prove that it came from the official mod. Check the file’s location and the Minecraft instance or launcher that started it.
Another program can use the same name
A separate GitHub project has a Windows export configuration that names its output Sodium.exe. That demonstrates that the name is not globally unique. A file with this name could belong to software unrelated to Minecraft.

How do I identify the sodium.exe file on my PC?
Do not start by deleting the process. First establish which file Windows is running and which application launched it.
- Open the file location. In Task Manager, right-click the
sodium.exeprocess and choose Open file location. Record the complete path, including the drive letter and every folder, and note the parent application or shortcut that appears to have launched it. - Inspect the file properties. Right-click the file, choose Properties, and review the Publisher and Details tabs. Look for the product name, description, version, and original filename. A generic description or a mismatch with the parent application is a reason to investigate further.
- Check the signature. Open the Digital Signatures tab, if present, and inspect the signer and signature status. An unexpected signer or no signature does not automatically prove maliciousness, but it means you should not bypass a warning merely because the filename looks familiar.
- Record the context. Write down whether the file starts with Minecraft, another game, a utility, or Windows startup. Preserve the path, publisher, file hash if you are able to obtain one, and any Defender detection name before asking for help.

What should I do if Windows Defender or SmartScreen warns about sodium.exe?
Do not bypass a warning simply because the process name resembles Minecraft Sodium. Verify the source and signature, then scan the system.
- Open Windows Security and select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection updates and update the security intelligence before scanning.
- Run a Full scan. This examines the system more broadly than a quick check and may take substantial time.
- If the detection or suspicious behavior remains, open the scan options and run Microsoft Defender Offline. The computer restarts so Defender can inspect the system outside the normal Windows session.
- Read the detection name and the affected path. A detection tied to the exact file is more useful than a process name copied from Task Manager.

Keep the file quarantined or blocked while you establish its provenance. If it is later confirmed as part of a legitimate Minecraft installation, reinstalling that component from the expected source is safer than restoring an unverified copy.

Can I delete sodium.exe?
Only delete it after identifying the parent program and confirming that you do not need that program. Removing an executable from an unknown location can leave a broken installation, while deleting a legitimate game component can create a new crash without addressing the original cause.
If it belongs to a program you do not want
Use Settings → Apps → Installed apps to uninstall the associated application. This removes its registered components and startup entries more cleanly than deleting one file. Restart Windows and check whether the process and its parent application are gone. Why does sodium.exe keep crashing with Minecraft?

Because these notes are tied to particular hardware and software versions, use them as diagnostic clues rather than as a blanket update rule. A current Sodium release may have different requirements.
How do I fix black screens, flickering, or OpenGL errors?
These symptoms point first to the rendering path: GPU driver, hardware compatibility, launcher, or mod interaction. Work from the least destructive test to the most substantial change.
- Write down the Minecraft version, Sodium version, mod loader, launcher, GPU model, and installed driver version.
- Reproduce the problem with only the required loader and Sodium components enabled. If the minimal setup works, add other mods back in small groups to identify a conflict.
