Check the file’s provenance
- Identify how the file arrived. An intentional download from HP or an HP driver utility is materially different from an unsolicited attachment, pop-up download or unknown mirror.

1. Preserve evidence and create a recovery path
- Write down the exact error text, complete file path, file size, version information and signature status.
- Create a Windows restore point if System Protection is enabled, and make sure you can reach Windows Recovery Environment. If the display becomes unusable, keep a known-good driver available on local storage.
- Disconnect unnecessary external displays and USB graphics adapters while diagnosing a laptop’s built-in adapter.
2. Replace a questionable download
