SPMReminder.exe is not a known Windows system component. File databases associate that name with third-party products such as Speed Guard, PC Speed Maximizer, PC Speed Maximizer Pro and SpeedingUpMyPC, including installations attributed to Avanquest Software and Smart PC Solutions. A commonly recorded path is C:Program Files (x86)PC Speed MaximizerSPMReminder.exe.

The name alone cannot prove whether your copy is safe. Databases contain many different hashes, sizes, versions and locations under the same filename. Some related samples are classified as potentially unwanted programs (PUPs), and one specific sample was reported by EnigmaSoft/SpyHunter with 1,904 detections in 2025. Verify the exact file, remove any unwanted parent application, clean its startup entry and scan Windows before deciding what to do.

What is SPMReminder.exe?

SPMReminder.exe appears to be a reminder or monitoring component installed by third-party PC “optimizer” software, rather than a file supplied by Windows. Records connect it with Speed Guard and PC Speed Maximizer products. The executable may be placed in a product directory such as C:Program Files (x86)PC Speed MaximizerSPMReminder.exe, but the same filename has also been catalogued in other folders.

That variation matters. ProcessChecker lists multiple SPMReminder.exe hashes, file sizes, versions and paths, so two files with the same name can be completely different binaries. A filename match is therefore an identification clue, not a safety verdict.

What does the “Reminder” component do?

The available records do not establish one consistent function for every build. In a PC Speed Maximizer installation it may support reminders, notifications or background monitoring. If the file launches at sign-in, displays a warning or generates a missing-file message after an uninstall, those behaviors can be associated with the parent application or a leftover startup reference.

Is SPMReminder.exe safe, or is it a virus?

You should treat an unverified copy as potentially unwanted until you check its path, signer, hash and security result. That cautious approach does not mean every SPMReminder.exe file is malware. It reflects the fact that third-party databases have reported both PUP and malicious classifications for related samples.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What the available detections mean

  • herdProtect lists related SPMReminder.exe entries as PUP.
  • EnigmaSoft’s PC Speed Maximizer report places a particular SPMReminder.exe sample in a malware-file group.
  • EnigmaSoft reported that 15 antivirus vendors flagged a PC Speed Maximizer file as malicious in 2026.
  • EnigmaSoft/SpyHunter recorded 1,904 detections for one SPMReminder.exe sample in 2025.

Those figures describe named files or samples, not every executable carrying the name. No first-party Microsoft statistic establishes how common SPMReminder.exe is or what percentage of copies are malicious.

Why “potentially unwanted” is different from malware

Microsoft describes potentially unwanted apps as software that is not necessarily malware but may show unwanted advertising, use a computer for cryptomining, offer unexpected applications or perform other unwanted actions. EnigmaSoft describes PC Speed Maximizer as a “bogus registry cleaner.” Such labels are reasons to verify and remove software you did not knowingly install; they are not proof that a particular file has infected your computer.

How do I check which SPMReminder.exe is on my PC?

Do the checks before deleting or replacing the file. They create a record you can use to distinguish a legitimate installation from a deceptive copy and help explain any startup error.

  1. Locate the running file. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager, select Details, right-click SPMReminder.exe and choose Open file location. Copy the complete path. A folder named PC Speed Maximizer, PC Speed Maximizer Pro or SpeedingUpMyPC is consistent with the third-party records; a different folder requires extra scrutiny.
  2. Record the parent program. In the file location, note nearby executable names, the product folder and the installation date shown in file Properties. In Settings > Apps > Installed apps, search for PC Speed Maximizer, Speed Guard or another program installed at the same time.
  3. Inspect the digital signature. Right-click the file, choose Properties and open Digital Signatures. Review the signer and whether Windows reports that the signature is valid. An absent or invalid signature is not automatic proof of malware, but it removes one source of trust.
  4. Calculate a hash. A hash identifies the exact binary, unlike the filename. Microsoft Sysinternals Sigcheck can display version information and signature status. In PowerShell, you can also run Get-FileHash -Algorithm SHA256 "C:pathtoSPMReminder.exe". Save the resulting SHA-256 value.
  5. Compare the result with a reputable malware-reputation service. Match the complete hash, not just “SPMReminder.exe.” ProcessChecker’s multiple entries show why an MD5 or SHA-256 value from one report must not be assumed to apply to another copy.

Do not upload a confidential executable to a public service without considering the file’s contents and your organization’s policy. Never download a replacement DLL or EXE from a random “fix” site; that can introduce a second, unverified binary.

Why does SPMReminder.exe keep popping up?

A recurring alert usually has one of three explanations: the parent optimizer is still installed and starts the process, Windows is trying to launch a file removed during an incomplete uninstall, or a scheduled/startup entry points to a path that no longer exists. The stale-entry explanation is an inference from the symptom, so confirm it on the affected computer instead of assuming it.

Capture the exact error first

Write down the complete wording, the path shown in the dialog, when it appears and whether it occurs at sign-in, when launching a game or after waking the PC. “SPMReminder.exe not found,” “missing entry point” and an application crash indicate different problems. A screenshot can preserve punctuation and the referenced folder.

Check event logs

  1. Press Win + R, enter eventvwr.msc and press Enter.
  2. Open Windows Logs > Application and Windows Logs > System.
  3. Filter or inspect events at the exact time of the pop-up. Note the faulting application, module, exception code and command path.

Event Viewer can confirm which component requested SPMReminder.exe, but it will not by itself prove that the file is safe.

How do I remove SPMReminder.exe safely?

Remove the unwanted parent application first. Deleting only the executable can leave startup references, scheduled tasks or registry entries that continue to generate errors.

1. Uninstall the parent application

  1. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps in Windows 11 or Windows 10.
  2. Search for PC Speed Maximizer, PC Speed Maximizer Pro, Speed Guard, SpeedingUpMyPC or another program that installed the file.
  3. Select the program, choose Uninstall and complete its wizard.
  4. Restart Windows, even if the uninstaller does not request it.

Microsoft recommends uninstalling software you do not need and then scanning with Microsoft Defender. If the product is absent from Installed apps, do not install an untrusted copy merely to obtain an uninstaller; continue with the startup and scan checks below.

2. Disable a leftover startup entry

Open Task Manager, select Startup apps, locate an entry associated with the removed product and choose Disable. Disabling is safer than immediately deleting because it gives you a reversible test. Restart and see whether the message returns.

For a fuller inventory, Microsoft Sysinternals Autoruns lists programs configured to start automatically and shows the registry or file location supplying each entry. Clear the Autoruns filter, search for SPMReminder, the parent product name and the exact old path, then disable an entry before removing it. Export a backup first; Microsoft warns that registry edits can have unintended consequences.

3. Check scheduled tasks

  1. Press Win + R, type taskschd.msc and press Enter.
  2. Review Task Scheduler Library and subfolders for tasks whose action launches SPMReminder.exe or the uninstalled product.
  3. Open a task’s Actions tab to verify the exact executable path and its Triggers tab to see when it runs.
  4. Disable the task, restart and test. Delete it only after you are certain it belongs to the unwanted program and you have retained any needed record.

4. Remove only the verified leftover file

If the parent program is gone, the startup references are disabled and your scan identifies the file as unwanted, delete the remaining SPMReminder.exe from its recorded folder. If Windows says the file is in use, restart into Safe Mode and repeat the deletion. Do not force-delete a file in a Windows system directory merely because its name resembles SPMReminder.exe.

How do I scan Windows for SPMReminder.exe?

Update Microsoft Defender before scanning so its security intelligence is current. Then run a full scan rather than relying only on a quick check.

  1. Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection > Protection updates > Check for updates.
  3. Return to Virus & threat protection, choose Scan options, select Full scan and start it.
  4. Allow quarantine or removal when Defender identifies the file. Record the detection name and file path.

If unwanted software remains or the process returns after a normal restart, use Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Scan options > Microsoft Defender Antivirus (offline scan). Windows restarts into a protected environment and scans before the normal desktop loads. Save work first and keep the computer connected to power.

What if SPMReminder.exe errors continue after uninstalling?

Use a clean boot to isolate third-party services

A clean boot starts Windows with a restricted set of services and startup programs. It helps determine whether another third-party component is recreating the error.

  1. Press Win + R, enter msconfig and press Enter.
  2. On the Services tab, select Hide all Microsoft services, then choose Disable all.
  3. Open the Startup tab and select Open Task Manager.
  4. Disable enabled non-Microsoft startup items, close Task Manager and select OK in System Configuration.
  5. Restart and test. If the error disappears, re-enable items in small groups until the responsible program is identified.

When testing is complete, return to System Configuration and choose Normal startup or re-enable the services you intentionally disabled. A clean boot is a diagnostic state, not a permanent performance setting.

Repair damaged Windows components only when symptoms point to Windows

If you also see system-file errors, crashes in unrelated applications or failed Windows components, run Microsoft’s built-in repair tools from an elevated Terminal. Open Windows Terminal (Admin) and execute:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
sfc /scannow

Run the commands one at a time and restart if Windows requests it. These tools repair Windows component files; they do not validate a third-party SPMReminder.exe and should not be used as a reason to restore an unknown executable.

How do I recover if Windows will not boot?

If the SPMReminder.exe problem prevents Windows from reaching the sign-in screen, use official Windows installation media rather than downloading a replacement executable.

  1. Start the PC from Windows installation media.
  2. At the setup screen, choose Repair your computer, not Install now.
  3. Select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Repair.
  4. Choose the Windows installation when prompted and let the repair complete.

Startup Repair targets boot configuration and startup-related problems. It does not establish that SPMReminder.exe is safe, so once Windows starts, complete the path, signature, hash and Defender checks.

Which details should I compare when two SPMReminder.exe reports disagree?

Conflicting online classifications are expected when a filename covers multiple binaries. Compare the concrete attributes below rather than relying on a generic search result.

Attribute What to record Why it matters
Full path Drive, folders and filename A known product directory is different from a temporary, download or system location.
Digital signer Signer name and Windows signature status Shows whether the binary has a verifiable publisher signature; an unsigned file needs more scrutiny.
Hash Prefer SHA-256 for the exact file Separates one build from another despite an identical filename.
Parent application Installed product and install date Connects the executable to software you can uninstall or investigate.
Persistence Startup app, Autoruns entry or scheduled task Explains repeated launches and leftover pop-ups.
Security result Defender detection and reputation-service result Provides a current assessment of that binary, not a different sample.
Post-uninstall status Whether the file remains after restart Helps distinguish an active installation from a stale reference.

How can I avoid making the problem worse?

  • Do not run an unknown replacement downloaded from a DLL- or EXE-fix website.
  • Do not delete registry entries in bulk. Export the relevant key or create a restore point before manual changes.
  • Do not assume that a familiar-looking folder proves authenticity; verify the signature and hash.
  • Do not disable Microsoft Defender permanently to make a pop-up disappear.
  • Keep the exact error text and path before uninstalling, because removing the parent program can erase useful evidence.
  • If the computer is managed by an employer or school, contact its administrator before uploading files or changing security settings.

If you prefer an optional shortcut after trying the manual checks, Outbyte PC Repair can address more than 100 common Windows issues where possible, including broken system elements, invalid redirects and shared DLL problems, while also offering cleanup, privacy and vulnerability-check features. It complements antivirus software rather than replacing it; results vary, and no tool repairs every crash. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7 with a free trial by category for at least two days, followed by a paid subscription.

What should you do after the error is gone?

Restart Windows twice and confirm that the pop-up, Task Manager process and startup entry stay absent. Check Installed apps and Task Scheduler once more, then run a final Defender scan. Keep the recorded hash and detection details if you need to report the file to an administrator or security vendor.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I disable SPMReminder.exe instead of uninstalling it?

Yes, disabling its Startup apps entry or Autoruns entry is a reversible diagnostic step. It does not remove the parent program or prove that the file is safe, so uninstall the associated application and scan Windows if you do not need it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why is SPMReminder.exe running from AppData?

An AppData location is not automatically malicious, but it is outside the commonly recorded PC Speed Maximizer installation path and deserves additional verification. Check the file’s signer, SHA-256 hash, parent process and Defender result before allowing it to run.

Will System Restore remove SPMReminder.exe?

System Restore may roll back installed programs, drivers and startup configuration to an earlier restore point, but it is not a guaranteed malware-removal method. After a restore, verify Installed apps, startup entries and Defender results again.

Should I report a suspicious SPMReminder.exe file?

If a security product detects the file, preserve the detection name, path and hash and follow that product’s submission or quarantine guidance. On a managed computer, give those details to the administrator rather than distributing the executable.
