squirrel.exe is usually connected with Squirrel.Windows, an installer and automatic-update framework used by many Windows desktop applications, including traditionally installed Electron apps. It is not a Windows core process, and the filename alone does not prove that a copy is safe. A legitimate copy should belong to an application you intentionally installed, sit in that application’s per-user folder under %LocalAppData%, and have a trustworthy publisher and source. An unexpected path, unknown signature, unofficial download, or Microsoft Defender detection needs investigation before you run or delete it.
What is squirrel.exe?
Squirrel.Windows is an open-source installation and update framework for Windows desktop apps. Electron describes Squirrel as a framework that lets Electron applications update automatically. The framework is application software, not a component required by Windows itself.

People often call a Squirrel-related executable “squirrel.exe,” but the normal Squirrel.Windows layout centers on several files. The exact executable name and path depend on the application that packaged Squirrel, so identify the owning app rather than trusting the filename.
| Component | Typical role | Where it appears |
|---|---|---|
Setup.exe |
Bootstrapper that starts installation | Installer package or temporary installation location |
Update.exe |
Launches the selected app version and performs updates | Usually in the app’s Squirrel-managed directory |
packages |
Stores downloaded or staged package files | Under the per-user Squirrel directory |
app-* folders |
Hold individual installed versions | Inside the named application’s folder |
RELEASES |
Manifest used to compare available versions and package hashes | With the update packages |
During installation, Squirrel extracts the updater and initial package, creates a per-user directory under %LocalAppData%<AppName>, and places the program in a versioned app-* folder. A shortcut may call Update.exe --processStart <App>.exe so the updater can select the current version. These details explain why a Squirrel file can appear in a game launcher, chat client, editor, or another desktop program’s folder without being part of Windows.

Is squirrel.exe safe?
It can be safe when it is part of a known application installed from a trusted source, but the name alone is not a safety certificate. Treat the question as a verification exercise: establish ownership, inspect the location and signature, and scan the file if anything is unexpected.
Check the owning application
- Open Task Manager, locate the process, right-click it, and choose Open file location. If the process has already exited, use the path shown in the error dialog or your security product’s alert.
- Record the parent application’s name, the complete path, any command-line arguments, and the publisher shown in the file’s Properties dialog.
- Decide whether you intentionally installed that parent application. A legitimate Squirrel directory normally uses the app’s recognizable name beneath
%LocalAppData%and contains related files such asUpdate.exe, packages, and versioned folders.
Inspect the signature and source
In File Explorer, right-click the executable, choose Properties, and inspect the Digital Signatures tab when it is present. The signer should correspond to the application vendor or its authorized publisher, and Windows should report that the signature is valid. A missing or invalid signature is not automatic proof of malware, but it is a reason to stop and investigate.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Compare the installed application with the installer obtained from the vendor’s official website or the Microsoft Store. Do not replace a suspicious file with a copy from an executable-collection site; that can introduce a second, unverified program.
Scan before allowing an exception
If Microsoft Defender or another security product flags the file, leave it quarantined while you investigate. Update security intelligence, run a full scan, and follow the product’s process for submitting a suspected false positive. Microsoft also documents Microsoft Defender Offline for cases in which unwanted software persists or a normal scan cannot remove it. Windows App & browser control supplies SmartScreen and related reputation protections for unsafe apps, malware, phishing, and potentially unwanted applications. Do not create an antivirus exclusion merely to make an installer proceed.
Where should a legitimate Squirrel installation be?
A normal consumer installation is usually per-user, beneath %LocalAppData%<AppName>, with the updater and versioned application directories together. The exact app name, version numbers, and capitalization vary, so the pattern matters more than one fixed path.
- More plausible: a recognizable application folder in your profile’s
AppDataLocaltree, a valid publisher signature, and an installer you obtained from the vendor. - Needs investigation: a copy in a random temporary directory, a system folder unrelated to the parent app, a misspelled or randomly generated application name, no trustworthy publisher, or an installer from an unofficial source.
- High priority: a Defender detection, attempts to run from an unusual location, or a process that returns after you have removed the parent application.
Do not infer safety or danger from location alone. Malware can imitate a legitimate path, while a genuine installer may briefly use a temporary directory. Combine the path, publisher, parent application, source, and scan result.
Can I delete squirrel.exe?
Do not delete it just because the name looks unfamiliar. Removing Update.exe, package files, or a related executable can break shortcuts, startup entries, and future updates for the application that owns them.

If your goal is to remove the application, first identify it in Settings > Apps > Installed apps (or Apps & features on older Windows versions), select the parent application, and use its uninstall command. Use the vendor’s documented uninstaller when one is provided. After uninstalling, reboot and check for leftover data only if you no longer need the app’s settings or saved data; do not remove unrelated folders from %LocalAppData%.
If a file remains after a proper uninstall, preserve its path and timestamps, scan it, and contact the application vendor before manual deletion. A persistent process from an unknown parent should be treated as a security investigation, not as routine cleanup.
How does Squirrel.Windows install and update an app?
The installer and updater follow a predictable sequence that helps explain many errors.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Bootstrap:
Setup.exeextracts or starts the Squirrel components and the initial package. - Per-user deployment: the app is created under
%LocalAppData%<AppName>, avoiding a machine-wide Windows program directory in the standard layout. - Version selection: the executable is placed in an
app-*folder. Shortcuts can invokeUpdate.exe, which starts the current version rather than a hard-coded folder. - Update check: the updater reads the
RELEASESmanifest, compares available versions, and verifies package hashes. - Side-by-side install: a new version is placed in another versioned directory, after which shortcuts are rewritten to point to it.
The documented update process has no built-in rollback. If a newly installed version is faulty, recovery normally requires the application’s supported repair, uninstall, or reinstall path rather than expecting Squirrel to restore the previous folder automatically.
How do I fix a squirrel.exe installation or runtime error?
Start by identifying the exact failure category. Installation errors, update failures, policy blocks, first-run timing issues, and malware detections need different remedies.
1. Capture the exact path and message
- Write down the complete error text, including any error code or named file.
- In Task Manager, check the process path, parent application, publisher, and command line. This prevents you from troubleshooting a look-alike executable as if it were a genuine Squirrel component.
- Note whether the problem occurs during first installation, application launch, an update check, or every time Windows starts.
Do not download a replacement squirrel.exe from a file-collection site. The correct repair is tied to the parent application’s installer and version.
2. Read the initial-install log
For an installation that fails before the app is usable, open File Explorer and enter %LocalAppData%SquirrelTempSquirrelSetup.log in the address bar. The Squirrel FAQ identifies this file as the log for the initial install. Search it for the first error, access-denied message, blocked executable, missing package, or failed extraction rather than focusing only on the final “installation failed” line.

Save a copy of the log before retrying if you plan to send it to the vendor; a new attempt can overwrite or add entries and make the original failure harder to isolate.
3. Check for a managed-PC policy block
Organizations sometimes prohibit executables launched from %LocalAppData%. That policy can stop a legitimate updater even when the same installer works on a personal computer.
- Use the error details to confirm that execution from the user profile is being blocked.
- The Squirrel FAQ describes running
Update.exefrom the SquirrelTemp directory to reveal the policy message during diagnosis. - On a work or school computer, give the exact path and message to your administrator and ask whether the Squirrel and parent-application executables can be approved under the organization’s rules.
Do not bypass organizational controls by renaming files, copying them into system folders, or disabling security software. Those changes can violate policy and make later diagnosis less reliable.
4. Rule out a security-product block
Open the security product’s protection history and confirm which file was flagged and why. Update its definitions, leave a suspicious file quarantined, and run a full scan. If the alert remains or the system shows other unwanted behavior, use Microsoft Defender Offline as Microsoft recommends for persistent unwanted software. Only after the vendor and security product establish that a detection is false should you follow the product’s documented restoration process.
5. Retry with a clean application state
- Close the parent app and any visible updater process. In Task Manager, verify that its processes have exited before continuing.
- Restart Windows to release file locks and finish pending updates.
- Download the current installer from the application’s official vendor or Microsoft Store and run it without mixing files from an older package.
- If the install remains broken, uninstall the parent application through Windows Settings, preserve any settings or saved data you need, reboot, and install again from the trusted source.
This sequence repairs the parent application rather than trying to replace one Squirrel file in isolation. The exact uninstall and data-preservation choices depend on the application, so check its vendor documentation before deleting profile data.
6. Account for first-run timing
Electron applications can hold a temporary lock during their first launch by passing --squirrel-firstrun. During that brief period, an update check can fail even though the installation is healthy. Wait a few seconds, launch the app again, and retry the update. If the failure happens only immediately after installation, this timing condition is more likely than a damaged executable.
7. Escalate with useful evidence
When reinstalling does not help, provide the vendor with the exact application version, Windows edition and build, complete executable path, publisher information, error text, and the relevant portion of SquirrelSetup.log. State whether the computer is managed by an organization and whether Defender or another product blocked a file. Those details let support distinguish packaging, permissions, policy, and security causes.

Why does squirrel.exe keep running?
Squirrel-related activity can be normal when an application checks for updates, starts through Update.exe, or completes first-run setup. A shortcut may launch the updater as the indirection layer, so seeing an updater process does not by itself indicate malware.
Investigate repeated or unexplained activity by checking the process path, command line, parent app, and signature. If the process belongs to an app you no longer use, uninstall that app and reboot. If it returns from an unknown path, has no trustworthy signature, or triggers security alerts, scan the system and preserve the evidence instead of repeatedly terminating the process.
What should developers know about Squirrel.Windows errors?
For an installed app, verify that Update.exe is one directory above the application executable in the layout expected by Squirrel. Capture exceptions from the updater’s UpdateManager and keep the RELEASES manifest, package hashes, versioned folders, shortcuts, and signatures consistent across releases.
Electron’s Windows auto-update documentation describes traditionally installed Electron apps as using Squirrel.Windows and notes the first-run lock described above. For new Electron builds, electron-builder currently labels its Squirrel.Windows target maintained but deprecated and recommends NSIS for new projects. That is a packaging recommendation for developers; it does not make every existing Squirrel-installed application unsafe. Existing products can continue using Squirrel.Windows when their update flow is maintained, signed, and supported.

When should I reinstall instead of troubleshooting squirrel.exe?
Reinstall when the parent application’s files are incomplete, the updater repeatedly fails after a reboot, or the vendor’s current installer replaces the damaged package cleanly. Troubleshoot first when the error points to an organization policy, a temporary first-run lock, or a security detection, because reinstalling will not change those conditions.
- Repair in place: appropriate when the app opens and only one update attempt failed.
- Uninstall and reinstall: appropriate when versioned folders or shortcuts are inconsistent and the vendor provides no repair command.
- Administrator support: required when execution from
%LocalAppData%is prohibited. - Security response: required when the file is untrusted, repeatedly recreated, or detected by Defender.
There is no reliable error-rate statistic showing how often squirrel.exe problems occur, so avoid assuming that a particular message is harmless or universal. The path, parent application, log, policy, and scan evidence should determine the branch you take.
If you want an optional shortcut after trying the manual checks, Outbyte PC Repair can look for common Windows issues, clean temporary and cache files, review privacy and vulnerability settings, and provide an app-crash log. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7; its free trial is category-based for at least two days before a subscription, and it complements rather than replaces antivirus protection. Results vary, and no tool repairs every crash.
What questions do people ask next about squirrel.exe?
Does Squirrel.Windows need an internet connection every time an app starts?
No. The installed application can launch from its local versioned folder, while update checks are a separate operation. Network access is needed only when the app or updater contacts its configured update source, and a failed check does not necessarily prevent an already installed version from opening.

Why are there several app-* folders in LocalAppData?
Squirrel keeps versions in separate directories so an update can be installed alongside the currently selected version before shortcuts are changed. The folders are part of the framework’s version-selection design; remove them only through the parent application’s supported uninstall or cleanup process.

Copying the visible application folder may omit Update.exe, the RELEASES manifest, shortcuts, packages, and per-user settings. Use the vendor’s installer on the second computer so the complete layout and update registration are created for that Windows user.
What information should I include in a support ticket?
Include the parent app and version, Windows edition and build, full path to the executable, publisher and signature status, exact error text, whether the PC is managed, and the relevant Squirrel setup or updater log lines. Also say whether Defender or another security product quarantined anything; support can then separate a package problem from a policy or security block.
Is a Squirrel.Windows application abandoned because newer installers are recommended?
Not necessarily. A current packaging recommendation concerns new builds, while an existing application may remain reliable if its vendor maintains signed packages, update metadata, and support. Judge the installed program by its source, signature, update behavior, and vendor support rather than by the installer technology’s name alone.
