Stampinf.exe is Microsoft’s Windows Driver Kit (WDK) build utility for updating directives in driver INF and INX files. Microsoft’s documentation does not identify a general Windows component named stamp.exe. If that is the literal filename on your PC, do not assume it is the WDK tool: verify its complete path, publisher signature, download origin and security-scan result before running it. Genuine Stampinf failures usually come from an incomplete or mismatched Visual Studio/SDK/WDK installation, a wrong INF or INX input, an architecture mismatch, catalog or version settings, or a date-time conflict between Stampinf and Inf2Cat.
What is stamp.exe?
The documented Microsoft executable is Stampinf.exe, commonly called Stampinf. It is a driver-development utility supplied through the Windows Driver Kit. The input file is selected with the -f option. Other options represented by the WDK task include -a for architecture, -c for catalog handling, -d for the DriverVer date, -k and -u for framework versions, -v for version data and -n for diagnostic output. The exact command line shown in your build log is more useful than guessing which project property produced an error.
Is stamp.exe safe?
A filename alone cannot establish safety. A copy of Stampinf.exe installed with a supported WDK and started by a Visual Studio or MSBuild driver project is consistent with Microsoft’s documented toolchain. A file literally named stamp.exe, especially one in a temporary, downloads or user-writable folder, is unverified until its provenance and signature have been checked. That is a precaution, not proof that every such file is malicious.
Check the full path and publisher
- In File Explorer, right-click the file, choose Properties, and record the complete path, file description, product name and version.
- Open the Digital Signatures tab. Inspect the signer, signature status and certificate details. An absent or invalid signature is a reason to stop and investigate, not a reason to bypass the warning.
- Use Microsoft’s SignTool verification workflow on the executable or the related driver package and catalog. SignTool can check embedded signatures and catalog signatures, including driver-policy checks.
- Consider the file’s origin. Windows Attachment Manager records whether a file came from the internet and can block files downloaded from untrusted sources. Unblock a file only after confirming that the source and signature are trustworthy.
Scan before you execute an unfamiliar copy
Update Microsoft Defender security intelligence and scan the file. If you suspect persistent unwanted software, a full scan or Defender Offline scan is more appropriate than creating an exclusion to force a build. Do not download a replacement stamp.exe from a generic DLL or EXE repository; install the WDK through Microsoft’s supported channels instead.
Where is Stampinf.exe installed?
Stampinf is delivered by the WDK and integrated with Visual Studio/MSBuild. It is not a standalone component of Visual Studio. The exact installation directory varies with the Visual Studio edition, WDK release, selected architectures and installation options, so a single universal path would be misleading.
For a project build, the most reliable way to identify the executable is to enable a detailed MSBuild log and inspect the StampInf task invocation. If the log says the command cannot be found, check the installed WDK component and the developer environment rather than copying an executable from another computer.

Why does Stampinf.exe fail when I build a driver?
Most genuine Stampinf failures are configuration problems rather than faults in Windows itself. The first error in the build log usually points to one of five areas: the WDK/SDK/Visual Studio toolchain, the INF or INX input, the target architecture, date handling, or catalog and version metadata.
Missing executable or MSBuild task
If MSBuild reports that stampinf.exe cannot be found or cannot start, the WDK component may not be installed, Visual Studio may not have been modified to include driver-development components, or the SDK and WDK build numbers may not match. Stampinf is supplied by the WDK and exposed to MSBuild through its task integration; installing Visual Studio alone is insufficient.
Wrong file or target architecture
The -f argument identifies the INF or INX file. For INX templates, -a controls architecture substitution, with documented values including x86, x64 and 64. A project can therefore fail when it points at the wrong template, uses an unsupported architecture value or builds a platform different from the intended driver package.
DriverVer and catalog date conflicts
Stampinf can obtain the DriverVer date from the -d option, the STAMPINF_DATE environment setting or the current date. Inf2Cat interprets the INF date as UTC, while Stampinf’s date handling is not UTC by default. Around midnight or a time-zone boundary, Inf2Cat can consequently report that DriverVer is set to a date in the future.
Missing catalog or unexpected version
Stampinf writes a CatalogFile directive only when requested with -c, except where development-mode behavior changes that result. Version information can come from -v, STAMPINF_VERSION or Ntverp.h. Editing generated INF output by hand can hide the real project setting and cause the next build to recreate the problem.

How do I fix stamp.exe or Stampinf errors on Windows?
Use this sequence in order. It separates an unverified executable from a legitimate WDK build failure and preserves the exact values needed to diagnose the first failing step.
1. Record what actually failed
- Copy the complete error text, not just the final MSBuild summary.
- Record whether the filename is
stamp.exeorstampinf.exe. - Note the full path, publisher, signature status, file origin and the project configuration being built.
- Keep the first StampInf, Inf2Cat or MSBuild error; later messages are often cascading failures.
If the literal name is stamp.exe, pause before execution. Microsoft’s documented WDK utility is Stampinf.exe, so identity must be established before treating the file as a build component.
2. Repair the Visual Studio, SDK and WDK installation
- Open the Visual Studio Installer and choose Modify for the Visual Studio installation used by the driver project.
- Confirm that the Windows Driver Kit component is installed and that the Windows SDK required by the project is present.
- Check that the SDK and WDK build numbers are compatible. Microsoft’s driver-development guidance specifically requires matching versions.
- Apply the installer’s repair option if the components are present but the build task or executable is missing.
- Close and reopen Visual Studio after the change so MSBuild reloads the updated environment.
Do not solve a missing-tool error by downloading a lone executable. A supported kit installation supplies the task integration, headers, libraries and signing utilities that the build expects.
3. Use the matching developer environment
Open the Developer Command Prompt associated with the Visual Studio and WDK installation used by the project, or start the project from that Visual Studio instance. Building from an unrelated shell can omit the paths and environment variables that locate WDK tools. Select the intended solution configuration and platform before rebuilding.

4. Verify the INF or INX input
- Inspect the project’s StampInf settings and confirm that
-fresolves to the intended file. - If the source is an INX template, check every architecture placeholder and the platform selected in Visual Studio.
- Confirm that the file exists at the path shown in the build log and that the build account can read it.
- Check that the INF syntax and referenced files are valid before investigating secondary catalog errors.
For a multi-platform package, build each supported architecture deliberately rather than assuming an x64 build will validate x86 substitutions.

5. Correct architecture substitution
Compare the active platform with the value passed through -a. Microsoft documents x86, x64 and 64 architecture values. A mismatch can leave $ARCH$ unresolved or produce paths and sections that do not belong to the selected target. Correct the project metadata or template; do not patch the generated INF after every build.
6. Resolve DriverVer and Inf2Cat time handling
- If the error mentions a future DriverVer date, identify whether the date came from
-d,STAMPINF_DATEor the current system date. - Set
STAMPINF_DATEexplicitly to the intended UTC date when the package is being stamped for Inf2Cat’s default interpretation. - Alternatively, configure Inf2Cat with
/uselocaltimewhen the project deliberately uses local time. Use one time convention consistently. - Clean the output and rebuild so the INF and catalog are generated from the corrected values.
Inf2Cat checks whether a package can be digitally signed for the selected Windows versions and generates catalog files when the package is valid. A date fix will not cure unrelated INF syntax, signing or platform errors.
7. Check catalog and version properties
When a catalog is missing or has an unexpected name, inspect the project’s catalog settings and the Stampinf command line for -c. For a wrong package version, check -v, STAMPINF_VERSION and any version information supplied through Ntverp.h. Make the change in the project or build environment, then regenerate the output instead of editing generated files manually.
8. Increase MSBuild verbosity
- In Visual Studio, open Tools > Options > Projects and Solutions > Build and Run.
- Increase the project and log-file verbosity settings.
- Run a clean rebuild.
- Capture the complete StampInf command, including the input path, architecture, date, catalog and framework arguments.
The expanded log lets you compare the values you intended with the values MSBuild actually passed. Fix the first StampInf-related error, then rebuild before acting on later messages.
9. Handle a suspicious or flagged file separately
If Defender flags the binary, its signature is invalid, or its origin cannot be explained by your WDK installation, stop the build and quarantine or remove the file according to your security procedures. Run a full scan, and use Defender Offline when unwanted software persists. Do not create an antivirus exclusion merely to make Stampinf run. Reinstall the supported WDK after the system is clean and verify the new file’s signature.

Can I delete a file named stamp.exe?
Do not delete it solely because of its name. First record its path and signature, determine whether a WDK or another trusted application installed it, and scan it; removing a file that a build depends on can create a different failure.
Does Windows need Stampinf.exe for everyday use?
No. Stampinf is intended for building Windows driver packages, not for normal desktop operation. If you do not develop or package drivers, it should not be running as a routine background process.
Why does the same driver build work on one computer but not another?
The machines may have different Visual Studio, SDK or WDK build combinations, project environment variables, system time settings or selected platforms. Compare the complete verbose StampInf command and kit versions rather than copying the executable between systems.
Will changing the system clock fix a future DriverVer error?
