Is stellarphotorecovery.exe safe?
It can be safe when it is the genuine Stellar executable, but the name by itself is not evidence. Check where the file came from, where it is stored, whether its publisher signature is valid, which version it contains and what Windows Security reports before allowing it to run.
Use provenance as your first check
- Prefer the official Stellar download or a trusted Microsoft Marketplace distribution.

Use an elevated Command Prompt when a DLL error, repeated crash or other symptom suggests damaged Windows components.
- Open Start, type
Command Prompt, right-click it and choose Run as administrator. - Run this command and wait for it to finish:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth- After DISM completes, run System File Checker:
sfc /scannow- Restart Windows and launch Stellar Photo Recovery again.
Microsoft’s guidance is to run DISM before System File Checker. Do not close the Command Prompt merely because progress appears to pause; let each command complete before starting the next one.

5. Scan when the file’s provenance or behavior is suspicious
If the executable is unsigned, appears in an unexpected location, came from a mirror, recreates itself or causes unrelated system behavior, stop using it until Windows Security has completed a scan. Disconnect from sensitive accounts while investigating if you are concerned about the machine’s integrity, then run a regular scan followed by Microsoft Defender Offline scan when appropriate.
Remove a detected threat according to Windows Security’s instructions. After the system is clean, uninstall the questionable copy and reinstall Stellar Photo Recovery from an official source. A program error is not always an executable problem. Some cameras do not expose their internal memory card as a disk when connected directly by USB. Remove the card and connect it through a compatible card reader, then reopen Stellar Photo Recovery and check whether the card appears as a source.
When the program reports “Source and destination are same”, select another drive or location for the recovered files. For example, recover from an SD card to the computer’s internal drive or to a separate external drive. Writing recovered files back to the source can overwrite data that has not yet been recovered.
