There is no authoritative identification for the exact filename stkremv.exe. The name alone cannot establish whether the file is safe, malicious, or part of a legitimate program. Identify the copy on your PC by its complete path, digital signature, publisher, parent process, startup entry, hash, and Microsoft Defender results before you run, delete, or replace it.
A similarly named file, StkC112X.exe, has been described as a legacy Syntek USB 2.0 still-image capture application, but it is a different filename and does not prove that stkremv.exe belongs to Syntek. The safest approach is to preserve the file’s evidence, scan it, investigate persistence, and repair the software or Windows components only after its origin is understood.

stkremv.exe is an unresolved Windows executable name. No authoritative entry establishes a vendor, product, function, or normal installation directory for that exact spelling. A process name can be copied, misspelled, or chosen by unrelated software, so searching the filename and accepting the first match is not a reliable identification method.
The closest documented result is StkC112X.exe, described as “Syntek USB 2.0 Still Image Capture Application.” That component is associated with older webcam hardware, but the spelling, capitalization, and filename are different. Treat it only as a lead to investigate if your computer contains old webcam software; never use it as proof that your stkremv.exe is legitimate.

The same name can therefore represent different situations: a leftover component, a damaged installation, an invalid startup reference, or an unwanted executable. Your local copy’s path and context matter more than the name displayed in an error dialog.
Why a filename is weak evidence
Windows can launch an executable from any directory the account can access, and unrelated installers can choose similar names. A message such as “Windows cannot find stkremv.exe” may refer to a deleted file, a broken shortcut, or a startup command left behind by an uninstalled program. Conversely, a file that is currently running may be present because a legitimate application launched it, because a device utility needs it, or because unwanted software established persistence. The spelling does not distinguish those cases.
Start with the copy actually present on the computer. If no copy exists, investigate the command that requests it rather than downloading a replacement with the same name.
Is stkremv.exe safe or a virus?
You cannot answer that from the filename alone. A valid signature in an expected vendor directory raises confidence, while an unsigned file in a temporary, user-profile, or otherwise unexplained directory deserves closer scrutiny. Neither result is absolute proof: legitimate older utilities can be unsigned, and malicious files can sometimes use misleading names or stolen signatures.
| Evidence to check | What a reassuring result looks like | What should trigger more investigation |
|---|---|---|
| Complete image path | A directory that belongs to software or hardware you knowingly installed | A temporary folder, random-looking directory, or location unrelated to your installed products |
| Publisher and digital signature | A valid signature whose signer matches the expected vendor | No signature, an invalid signature, or a signer you cannot connect to the parent software |
| Parent process | A known launcher or service from the same installed package | An unexplained script, browser process, or command that starts the file without a clear reason |
| Startup context | An entry you recognize and can trace to an installed application | An unexplained command in Startup apps, Run, or RunOnce |
| Security scan | Current Defender scans remain clean and no suspicious behavior is present | Detection, quarantine, repeated alerts, or other signs of compromise |
Consider all of these signals together. A generic filename match is weak evidence; a matching signed file, expected directory, known parent process, and clean scan provide a much stronger trust chain.
How to interpret a path
Write down every folder in the path, including the drive letter and user-profile name. A location inside a clearly named application or device directory is easier to relate to an installation than a randomly named folder under a temporary location. Path evidence is not a verdict by itself: a legitimate installer may use a temporary directory during setup, and malicious software can create a convincing-looking folder. Use the path with the signer, parent process, and scan result.
How to interpret a signature
In the file’s Properties window, Windows reports whether a digital signature is present and valid. Compare the signer with the company that supposedly supplied the parent application or hardware package. An unsigned file is not automatically malware, particularly when dealing with an old utility, but it removes one important trust signal. A valid signature also does not make every behavior harmless; continue checking where the file came from and what launches it.
How do I identify the copy of stkremv.exe on my PC?
Capture the file’s details before changing it. This preserves information that can disappear if you delete the executable or allow an installer to overwrite it.

Ctrl+Shift+Escto open Task Manager. On the Processes or Details tab, look forstkremv.exe. Right-click it and choose Open file location. If it is not running, note the exact error text and continue with the startup checks below. - Record the path and context. Copy the complete path shown in File Explorer. In Task Manager’s Details view, add or inspect columns such as Command line, Image path name, and Parent process where available. Record the process name exactly, including spelling and capitalization.
- Inspect Properties. Right-click the file, select Properties, and review the General, Details, and Digital Signatures tabs. Check the product name, original filename, publisher, and whether Windows reports the signature as valid. A missing signature is a warning for further checking, not an automatic malware verdict.
- Capture a SHA-256 hash. Open PowerShell and run:
$p = Read-Host "Enter the full path to stkremv.exe"
Get-FileHash -Algorithm SHA256 -LiteralPath $p
Save the resulting hash with the path, signer, and error message. If you contact the software or hardware vendor, these details let support identify the exact build instead of guessing from the filename.
- Ask how it arrived. Check installed applications, recently installed drivers, hardware utilities, and the date the problem began. A file that appeared immediately after a known installation has a different starting hypothesis from one that appeared without any related change.
What to record when the file is missing
If File Explorer cannot open a location because the executable is gone, capture the complete error text, the program or shortcut that displays it, and when the message appears. A startup-only message points toward an orphaned startup command; a crash immediately after opening a named application points toward that application’s installation. Do not infer the owner from the message’s filename alone.
Why the command line matters
Arguments in the command line can reveal which package or script is requesting the file and whether it is being launched from an unexpected directory. Preserve the entire command, including quotation marks and switches, before disabling an entry. A command that points to a missing path still matters because it can explain why the warning returns at every sign-in.
How should I scan stkremv.exe before deleting it?
Scan the file while preserving its location and metadata. Do not execute an unknown copy just to see what it does.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection, then choose Scan options.
- Run a current Full scan. A quick scan may not examine every location where a suspicious executable or its persistence mechanism is stored.
- Open Protection history afterward and note the detection name, affected path, and action taken.
- If Defender detects the file, leave it quarantined or blocked while you investigate. Do not restore it merely because an application displays a missing-file error.
Microsoft notes that malware remnants can remain after automatic removal. A clean-looking desktop after one detection is not enough to assume that every related file or startup command has disappeared; complete the persistence review and run the full scan again if alerts continue.
Preserve evidence while scanning
Do not rename, edit, or move the file before recording its path and hash. Keep the detection name and timestamp from Protection history. Those details help distinguish a quarantined executable from an unrelated file that happens to have a similar name. If the scan is clean, that result is one piece of evidence, not a guarantee that an unexplained startup command is safe.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhat should I do if stkremv.exe appears suspicious?
Contain possible compromise before trying to repair the application that reported the error.
Disconnect the affected PC when compromise is plausible
If you see unexplained processes, browser changes, credential warnings, or repeated security detections, disconnect Ethernet, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth. Isolation limits communication while you collect evidence and scan. Avoid signing in to sensitive accounts on the affected computer during this stage.

Review startup locations
In Task Manager, open Startup apps and disable an entry only when you can identify it as unexplained or unwanted. For a deeper check, inspect the following registry locations in Registry Editor:
HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionRun
HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionRunOnce
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionRun
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionRunOnce
Also review the command lines with Microsoft’s Autoruns utility when the normal Startup list does not explain the launch. An entry that points to a missing file, a temporary directory, or an unknown command warrants investigation rather than blind deletion.

Protect accounts after cleanup
After the system has been scanned and the threat is removed, change important passwords from a known-clean device. Prioritize email, banking, game-platform, and password-manager accounts because control of one account can enable resets of others.
Know when to stop
Repeated detections, unexplained persistence, or credential concerns justify professional incident assistance or the affected vendor’s support channel. Provide the path, signer, hash, parent process, detection name, and timeline rather than sending only the filename. Do not upload a potentially sensitive executable to an unknown website merely to obtain an opinion.
How do I fix stkremv.exe errors on Windows?
The correct repair depends on what your evidence shows. Do not download a replacement executable or DLL from an unrelated “missing file” website.
Recommended Free Tools
Fix a “stkremv.exe not found” message at startup
- Use Task Manager’s Startup apps list to locate the entry that calls the missing file.
- Inspect its command line and identify the parent application or device package.
- If the entry is unexplained, leave it disabled while you complete a Defender scan and persistence review.
- If it belongs to software you still use, uninstall that parent application through Settings > Apps > Installed apps (or the equivalent Control Panel entry), restart, and reinstall the package from the official vendor only after confirming its identity.
Removing only the startup reference may stop the message while leaving a damaged or unwanted program behind, so record the path and scan results first.
Fix an application crash that names stkremv.exe
- Confirm which application launches the executable by checking the parent process and command line.
- Scan the executable and the surrounding installation directory.
- Install pending updates for the identified application or device from its official vendor.
- If the file is missing or corrupted and the scan is clean, repair or reinstall that parent package. Do not substitute a similarly named executable such as
StkC112X.exe.
Restart only after recording the evidence and completing the relevant scan. If the error returns immediately after reinstalling, stop and verify that the installer, signer, and installation path match the hardware or software you intended to restore.

Repair Windows files after malware handling
Run Windows repair tools only after scans are clean or the detected threat has been removed. Open Command Prompt as an administrator and run:
sfc /scannow
When that completes, run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
These commands address protected Windows files and the component store; they do not identify an unknown third-party executable or prove that a suspicious file is safe. If the original error remains, return to the parent software’s repair or reinstall process rather than repeatedly replacing system files.

If your evidence points to a webcam, imaging device, or another peripheral, record the hardware model and the package that installed the file. Obtain the driver or utility from that device maker’s official support channel, verify that the download matches your Windows edition, and scan the installer before running it. A near-name webcam component is not enough to establish a hardware connection.
When reinstalling Windows is considered
A clean Windows installation is a last resort, not a first fix for an unidentified executable. It requires backups and reinstallation of applications, and it can reintroduce the problem if an unsafe installer or the same unchecked executable is restored. Exhaust identification, containment, scanning, persistence review, and parent-package repair first.
Can I delete stkremv.exe?
Do not delete it solely because the name looks unfamiliar or because an error mentions it. Deletion can break the parent application, remove evidence needed for diagnosis, or leave a startup command that generates the same error repeatedly.
Preserve the path, signature, command line, parent process, and hash first. If Defender identifies the file, follow its quarantine or removal action and complete a full scan. If the file is confirmed to belong to software you no longer need, uninstall that software through Windows rather than deleting one executable in isolation.

Deletion versus quarantine
Quarantine is generally easier to reverse than manual deletion and retains the detection context in Protection history. If a legitimate program stops working after quarantine, verify the signer and parent package with the vendor before considering restoration. Never restore a detected file merely to suppress an error dialog.

- Evidence quality: A complete path, signer, hash, parent process, and startup command are stronger than a filename search result.
- Reversibility: Scanning and quarantining preserve more recovery options than immediate deletion or replacement.
- Security impact: An unexplained persistence entry or credential concern deserves containment before application repair.
- Hardware and software fit: A file should correspond to a package you can actually identify on the machine. A similar-looking name is not a match.
Use the explanation that accounts for the most independent evidence, and keep the least destructive action until the identity is established.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Trusting the first web result: A near-name result such as
StkC112X.exeis not an identification ofstkremv.exe. - Running a downloaded replacement: Random EXE and DLL download sites can add a second unknown file to the problem.
- Deleting before recording details: You may lose the path, hash, signer, and evidence needed for a vendor or security investigation.
- Repairing Windows first: SFC and DISM cannot determine whether a third-party executable is malicious; handle scans and containment first.
- Changing passwords on the suspect PC: Use a known-clean device if compromise is plausible.
- Assuming one clean scan settles everything: Continue checking persistence if alerts or unexplained startup entries remain.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I identify the owner of stkremv.exe from the filename alone?
No. Windows does not require executable names to be unique, and a copied file can use a familiar-looking name. The owner can be established only by correlating the local path, signer, package installation record, and process context.
Will reinstalling Windows always remove a stkremv.exe problem?
A clean Windows installation removes the existing system and applications, but it is a last resort with significant backup and reinstallation costs. It can also reintroduce the problem if you restore an unsafe installer or copy the same executable back without checking it.
Why can the error return after I remove the executable?
A startup command may still point to the old path, or another component may recreate the file. Check Startup apps and the Run/RunOnce locations, then scan again instead of repeatedly deleting whatever copy appears.
Should I restore stkremv.exe from Defender quarantine to test an application?
Do not restore it merely to make an error disappear. First confirm the signer and parent package with the vendor; restoring a detected file can reintroduce the risk that caused the quarantine.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Is StkC112X.exe the same file as stkremv.exe?
No. StkC112X.exe is a separately named legacy Syntek USB 2.0 still-image capture application. Its existence does not establish the identity, safety, or vendor of stkremv.exe.
What information should I send to technical support?
Provide the exact error text, full image path, command line, parent process, product and publisher details, signature status, SHA-256 hash, Defender detection or Protection history entry, and the hardware or software installation timeline.
What if stkremv.exe is unsigned but my webcam still works?
An unsigned file is not automatically malware, and working hardware is not proof of safety. Keep the path and hash, identify the package that installed it, scan it, and confirm the file with the device maker before deleting or replacing it.
Can SFC or DISM tell me whether stkremv.exe is malicious?
No. SFC repairs protected Windows files and DISM repairs the Windows component store. They do not identify an unknown third-party executable, so use Defender and the path, signer, parent, and startup evidence first.
How do I stop a repeated startup warning without deleting the file?
Record the command and path, identify the parent package, and disable the unexplained Startup apps entry while scanning and reviewing Run and RunOnce. If the entry belongs to software you still need, repair or reinstall that package from its official vendor.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Treat stkremv.exe as unidentified until its path, signer, parent process, startup context, hash, and Defender results agree. Preserve evidence, scan before acting, contain plausible compromise, and repair or reinstall only the verified parent software. Never substitute the similarly named StkC112X.exe or download a random replacement.
