stty.exe is the Windows executable for the POSIX/GNU stty command when it is provided by a compatibility environment such as Cygwin or MSYS2. GNU describes stty as a utility that “prints or changes terminal characteristics, such as baud rate.” It normally reads the terminal (TTY) attached to standard input, so it expects a POSIX terminal rather than an ordinary Windows process context.
The filename alone does not prove that a copy is safe or malicious. Check its full path, owning package, file metadata, launch context, hash and a current Microsoft Defender scan. Most errors arise because the command is being run from the wrong shell, the executable is missing from that environment’s PATH, or no POSIX TTY is available.

What is stty.exe used for on Windows?
stty displays and changes terminal line settings. Depending on the implementation, those settings include input and output speed, character handling, echo behavior and control modes. By default, GNU stty reads or changes the TTY connected to standard input; its --file option can target another device when that device is a supported terminal.
Windows does not normally include stty.exe as a core system process. You usually encounter it inside a POSIX compatibility layer:

- MSYS2: a Unix-like development environment whose
coreutilspackage contains GNU file, shell and text utilities.
Microsoft also publishes a native Windows Coreutils package, but its published command list does not include stty. Therefore, a file named stty.exe should not automatically be attributed to that package.
GNU notes that stty is installed only on platforms with a POSIX terminal interface. A script that assumes the command exists can therefore work on Linux yet fail in a native Windows shell or in a compatibility environment without a usable TTY.

A legitimate stty.exe is safe when it came from a Cygwin or MSYS2 installation that you intentionally installed and maintain. Safety is determined by provenance, not by the filename. An unexpected copy in a user-writable or temporary directory deserves investigation before you run it.
Check the file’s location
- Open the shell that reported the error and run
where stty. In PowerShell, also runGet-Command stty -All. - Record the complete path. A location under an intentionally installed Cygwin or MSYS2 tree is consistent with a normal package; a random download, temporary folder or unfamiliar application directory is not.
- If the command is not found, search only locations you recognize. Do not execute a similarly named file merely because it appears first in a web search.
Inspect metadata and the hash
In File Explorer, right-click the file, choose Properties, and review the Details and Digital Signatures tabs when present. In PowerShell, calculate a hash with:
Get-FileHash "C:pathtostty.exe" -Algorithm SHA256Compare the result with the package or release information from the Cygwin or MSYS2 distribution you deliberately installed. A missing signature is not by itself proof of malware, but an unexplained version, publisher or hash is a reason to stop and verify.
Find what launches it
Consider whether a shell script, terminal profile, scheduled task, service or parent process starts stty.exe. An expected launch from a Cygwin or MSYS2 shell is different from unexplained persistence at logon or a service you did not create. Disable or remove an unknown persistence entry only after recording its command and checking which application owns it.

Scan the exact file
Update Microsoft Defender definitions, then scan the file and its containing directory. Microsoft’s elevated command-line scanner is MpCmdRun.exe; it is normally located in the Defender platform directory rather than on your regular PATH. A typical file scan from an Administrator Command Prompt is:

Why is stty.exe not recognized or missing?
The message usually means that stty is not installed in the current environment or that its directory is not on that environment’s PATH. It does not necessarily indicate a damaged Windows installation.
Confirm the shell and environment
Check whether you are in a Cygwin terminal, an MSYS2 terminal, PowerShell, Command Prompt, Git-related shell or a scheduled task. A command available inside Cygwin may not be available in PowerShell, and an MSYS2 tool may not be on the PATH of a Cygwin session.

From the relevant shell, use its command lookup (which stty in a POSIX shell or where stty in a Windows shell) and inspect the PATH. Add the intended environment’s own bin directory only through that environment’s documented setup. Mixing Cygwin and MSYS2 directories can select incompatible libraries or scripts.
Repair the package
If the file is absent, open the package manager for the environment you intentionally installed and reinstall or repair its core utilities package. For Cygwin, rerun the official installer and select the required utilities; for MSYS2, update the installation and reinstall the package that supplies GNU core utilities. Avoid downloading a standalone executable from an unknown mirror, because it may not match the runtime libraries or package signatures.
What does “inappropriate ioctl for device” mean?
This error means stty tried to query or change terminal attributes, but standard input was not a POSIX TTY. The same underlying condition may appear as “standard input is not a terminal” or a similar diagnostic.
Run it from the terminal that owns the session
Open the Cygwin or MSYS2 terminal that created the interactive session and run stty -a there. Do not test it first from a plain Windows console if the script expects a POSIX PTY.

Remove redirection and pipelines while testing
Commands such as stty -a < input.txt, a pipeline, a scheduled task, a Windows service or a non-interactive build runner can replace standard input with a file or pipe. Test the command interactively, then redesign the script to detect whether a TTY is present before changing terminal state.
Use a device option only when appropriate
The GNU --file option can point at another device, but it does not turn an arbitrary Windows file, pipe or console handle into a POSIX terminal. Use it only with a device path supported by the installed implementation and environment. Check the local documentation with stty --help and the implementation’s manual because option availability can differ.
How do I fix a permission-denied or blocked stty.exe?
First distinguish a Windows access-control problem from a security-product block.
- Open the file’s Properties and review the Security tab for read and execute permissions.
- Check Microsoft Defender’s Protection history and any other security product’s quarantine or block log.
- Do not bypass a quarantine alert merely to make a script run. Verify the file’s source and hash, then reinstall the owning Cygwin or MSYS2 package if it was removed or modified.
- If the file is on a network, removable or encrypted volume, test a verified reinstall in the environment’s normal installation directory instead of changing permissions broadly.
How do I repair a corrupt or crashing stty.exe?
Reinstall the package that owns stty.exe, then scan the replacement. This is the normal repair for a damaged third-party executable and its supporting libraries.

sfc /scannow scans and replaces protected Windows system files. Run it from an elevated Command Prompt:
sfc /scannowIf Windows component files are damaged, repair the image first or afterward with:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealthRestart when prompted and repeat the check if necessary. These commands do not normally repair a Cygwin or MSYS2 copy of stty.exe; use them when other protected Windows components are also failing.

Why does a script work on Linux but fail on Windows?
The script may depend on a POSIX TTY, GNU options or device naming that are not available in the Windows context where it runs. Cygwin provides a POSIX API layer, but it is not a way to run every unmodified native Linux application.

Check the runtime assumptions
- Run the script inside the intended Cygwin or MSYS2 terminal rather than from PowerShell, Command Prompt, a service or a scheduler.
- Print the resolved command with
which sttyand confirm it belongs to the expected installation. - Read the installed implementation’s output from
stty --help; option names and supported modes can vary. - Make the script test for an interactive TTY before changing terminal settings, and provide a non-interactive fallback when no TTY exists.
Should I compare Cygwin and MSYS2 for stty?
Neither is a generic Windows system component, and they are not interchangeable merely because both can provide GNU utilities. Choose the environment that matches the scripts, terminal behavior and package lifecycle you need.

Can I delete stty.exe?
Do not delete it simply because the name looks unfamiliar. If it is inside a Cygwin or MSYS2 installation, deleting only the executable can break scripts or leave the package manager in an inconsistent state.
If you no longer need the environment, uninstall Cygwin or MSYS2 through its documented removal process. If you found an isolated, untrusted copy outside an installation, preserve the path and scan results for investigation, then remove it only after confirming that no legitimate application depends on it. Reinstall the official toolset if a required copy was deleted.

Terminal modes affect how input is echoed, buffered and interpreted. A script that changes them and exits unexpectedly can leave an interactive session appearing frozen or not displaying typed characters.
- Save the current settings with
stty -abefore making changes. - Keep a recovery command available in the same terminal; a common interactive recovery is
stty sane, provided the installed implementation supports it. - Test changes in a disposable session before applying them to login scripts or build automation.
- Do not apply settings intended for one terminal type to another environment without checking its documentation.

Does stty.exe belong to Windows?

Why does stty change how my keyboard behaves?
That is its purpose: terminal modes control echo, buffering and special control characters. A script can intentionally disable echo or switch between canonical and character-at-a-time input, and an interrupted script may leave those settings active until the terminal is reset.

Can a scheduled task use stty?
Only if the task creates or attaches to a compatible POSIX pseudo-terminal. A normal scheduled task has no interactive TTY, so calls that query standard input commonly fail with an ioctl or “not a terminal” message.
Is a missing digital signature proof that stty.exe is dangerous?
No. Some legitimate third-party command-line binaries may lack a Windows signature. Treat the absence as one verification signal and rely on the installation source, package integrity, path, launch context and a current malware scan together.
