subprocess.exe is not identified by Python or Microsoft documentation as a standard Windows system executable. Python’s official subprocess feature is a library module that starts child processes; Windows normally exposes Python through commands such as python and py, not through a built-in subprocess.exe. A file with that name can be a legitimate program component, a wrongly named script package, or malware. Do not delete it merely because of its name, and do not trust it merely because it sounds related to Python. Verify its complete path, publisher signature, hash, parent process and behavior, then repair the underlying Python or Windows problem that produced the error.
What does subprocess.exe mean on Windows?
Python’s documentation describes the subprocess module as a way to “spawn new processes, connect to their input/output/error pipes, and obtain their return codes.” That is Python code, not a Windows executable supplied as part of the operating system. A normal Python installation includes a runtime and commands such as python.exe and the Python launcher py.exe; it does not make subprocess.exe a standard component.

The filename may have been selected by an application developer, an installer that bundled Python, a script packager, or an attacker trying to look technical. The name alone proves neither legitimacy nor infection. Treat every copy as an unknown executable until its origin and activity are explained.
Is subprocess.exe safe or a virus?
There is no universal safe-or-malicious verdict based on the filename. A signed file inside a known application’s installation directory is more plausible than an unsigned copy launched from a temporary folder, but path and signature are clues rather than proof.

| Evidence to compare | What it can tell you | Why it is not conclusive |
|---|---|---|
| Full path | Shows which program directory or user folder contains the file. | Malware can copy itself into a plausible directory, and legitimate portable tools can run from unusual locations. |
| Digital signature and publisher | Identifies the signer and whether Windows considers the signature valid. | A valid signature does not prove that the file is appropriate for your computer; an unsigned small utility is not automatically malicious. |
| Cryptographic hash | Lets you compare the exact file with a vendor-provided value or a reputable multi-engine scan. | A hash is only useful when the comparison source is trustworthy and current. |
| Parent process and command line | Explains which application started it and with what arguments. | A compromised parent application can launch a malicious child, and a legitimate launcher can pass unusual arguments. |
| Network and file activity | May reveal unexpected connections, persistence or changes outside the program’s normal work. | Some legitimate applications update, log or contact cloud services. |
Microsoft’s security guidance recommends scanning a suspicious file rather than creating an exclusion to silence an alert. An exclusion can leave the device and personal data unprotected.
How do I inspect a suspicious subprocess.exe safely?
Record evidence before moving or deleting anything. If the process is actively damaging files, disconnect the computer from the network and use another trusted device to obtain help; otherwise, follow this sequence while signed in with an account that can inspect the file.
- Open its location. In Task Manager, right-click the process and choose Open file location. If it vanishes, use the Details tab and note the process ID, then inspect the shortcut, scheduled task or application that launches it.
- Record execution context. Note the complete path, command line, parent process, start time and account. Process Explorer from Microsoft Sysinternals can display owning accounts, handles, loaded DLLs and the process tree.
- Check the signature. Right-click the file, choose Properties, and open Digital Signatures. Inspect the signer and certificate details rather than relying on a green-looking icon or filename.
- Calculate a hash. In PowerShell, run
Get-FileHash -Algorithm SHA256 "C:fullpathsubprocess.exe". Save the result so you can compare the exact file with a vendor release or a reputable scanning service. - Use Sigcheck when more detail is needed. Microsoft’s Sigcheck utility reports version information, timestamps, hashes and signature chains; it can also query VirusTotal by hash. Download utilities only from Microsoft’s official Sysinternals distribution and review what you submit to any online service.
- Identify the owning application. A file under a known Python application or vendor directory is explainable if that application is installed and expected. A copy in
%Temp%, a random folder under a user profile, or a startup location deserves higher scrutiny, although location alone does not establish intent. - Scan before changing it. In Windows Security, select Virus & threat protection, update protection intelligence, and run a Full scan. If the file persists, cannot be removed while Windows is running, or appears to hide its activity, use Microsoft Defender Antivirus (offline scan); the computer restarts and scans outside the normal Windows session.
Do not open an unknown copy merely to see what it does, and do not double-click a command line copied from an alert. Preserve the path, hash and scan result if you need to report the file to the application vendor or a security professional.
Why does subprocess.exe keep popping up?
Repeated windows or process entries usually mean that another program is trying to start a child process and failing, or that a startup mechanism keeps relaunching the executable. The trigger can be legitimate software, a broken update, a scheduled task, or unwanted persistence.
A startup entry or scheduled task is relaunching it
Open Task Manager’s Startup apps tab and disable only an entry you can identify. Then open Task Scheduler, inspect Task Scheduler Library and vendor subfolders, and check the task’s Actions tab for the exact path. Do not delete a task merely because its name is unfamiliar; verify its publisher and related installed program first.

An application is calling a missing or moved file
Use the parent-process information to find the program that requests subprocess.exe. Repair or reinstall that parent application from its official installer, and remove obsolete shortcuts or scripts that point to an old location. Reboot and confirm whether the same parent starts the process again.

A malicious process is using persistence
Unexpected startup, browser changes, security-setting changes, high resource use while idle, or unexplained outbound connections increase the urgency of an offline scan. Do not add a Defender exclusion or terminate random system processes in an attempt to make the pop-up disappear.
How do I fix a Python subprocess error?
Python errors commonly arise from a wrong executable path, a missing installation, a changed working directory, missing environment variables, insufficient permissions, incorrect quoting, or a child program that exits with a nonzero status. The visible message may mention FileNotFoundError, “subprocess.exe was not found,” “application error,” or a return code; the remedy depends on which operation failed.
Confirm that Python and the launcher are the ones you expect
- Open a fresh Command Prompt and run
where pythonandpy -0p. These commands show which executable Windows will resolve and which Python installations the launcher knows about. - Run
python --versionand, if applicable,py --version. If Windows reports that the command is not found, install or repair Python from the distribution used by the application and ensure the application’s documentation matches that Python version. - Check the project’s virtual environment. Activate it with its own activation script or call its interpreter by full path; do not assume that a system-wide Python installation has the same packages or environment variables.
Use an explicit executable path and argument list
Prefer a list of arguments, for example subprocess.run([r"C:Toolsconverter.exe", "input.txt"], check=True), rather than a single command string assembled from user input. An explicit path avoids dependence on the current working directory and a fragile PATH. The Python documentation recommends subprocess.run() for cases it can handle.
On Windows, use raw-string notation or escaped backslashes in Python paths, and quote arguments that contain spaces when a shell is genuinely required. shell=True needs careful quoting of untrusted input; Windows batch files can still be interpreted by a system shell even when the apparent command is not an executable. Use shell=False, the default, unless the program specifically requires shell features.

Interpret the exception instead of retrying blindly
FileNotFoundErroror “was not found”: the executable path, working directory orPATHlookup is wrong, or the target program is not installed. Verify the exact path and test it outside Python.PermissionError: the account cannot read or execute the file, a security product blocked it, or a protected directory requires different permissions. Check the file’s security properties and the application’s documented privilege requirement; do not routinely run everything as administrator.CalledProcessErrorwithcheck=True: the child started but returned a nonzero code. Capture its standard output and error, then consult that child program’s documentation; changing Python’s path will not repair a failure inside the child.- A timeout or hang: the child may be waiting for input, displaying a hidden window, or deadlocking on pipes. Supply the expected input, redirect streams appropriately and use a timeout so the parent can terminate a stalled child safely.
How do I repair Windows if system files are damaged?
Use these commands only for Windows component corruption. They do not authenticate, disinfect or replace an arbitrary third-party subprocess.exe. Save work first and open Command Prompt with Run as administrator.
- Run
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealthfor a quick check of the component store. - Run
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealthfor a deeper scan. This can take considerably longer. - If corruption is reported, run
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth. Windows may use its configured repair source and may need internet access. - After DISM completes, run
sfc /scannow. Microsoft documents SFC as scanning protected system files and replacing incorrect versions when possible. - Restart Windows and reproduce the original error. If the repair command reports that source files cannot be found, use a matching Windows installation image with
/Source, for exampleDISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:wim:X:sourcesinstall.wim:1 /LimitAccess. The image must match the installed edition and build; an incompatible source can fail or produce an unsuitable repair.
Record the final messages from DISM and SFC. If errors continue, check Event Viewer under Windows Logs and the application’s own logs to determine whether the failure is Windows-wide or limited to one program.
Should I delete or quarantine subprocess.exe?
Delete or quarantine it only after you have identified it as unwanted and preserved the evidence needed for recovery. If a trusted application owns the file, removing it can break that application and leave the original launcher repeatedly reporting an error. First uninstall the associated program through Settings > Apps > Installed apps or its vendor-supported uninstaller, then rescan and remove leftovers.
If Windows Security identifies the file as a threat, let the security product quarantine it and follow its remediation instructions. If the file is merely unknown, submit the hash or file to the responsible software vendor for confirmation rather than uploading confidential program files to an untrusted service. Restore from quarantine only when you have verified a false positive and understand which application needs the file.
How can I decide which copy or fix deserves priority?
| Situation | First action | Likely next step |
|---|---|---|
| Signed file in an expected vendor directory; one application fails to launch | Check that application’s path, working directory and required runtime. | Repair or reinstall the application and correct its Python invocation. |
| Unsigned file in a temporary or random profile directory | Preserve the path and hash, then run a full and, if needed, offline scan. | Quarantine confirmed threats and investigate startup persistence. |
| Several Windows programs report missing or corrupt components | Run DISM, then SFC from an elevated Command Prompt. | Restart, review logs and repair the affected application if errors remain. |
| Python reports that a child returned a nonzero code | Capture the child’s output and return code. | Fix the child program’s configuration or input rather than replacing Python files. |
| The process repeatedly returns after removal | Identify its parent, startup entry or scheduled task. | Uninstall the owning program or remove confirmed malicious persistence, then rescan. |
As an optional shortcut after the manual checks, Outbyte PC Repair can address more than 100 common Windows issues where possible, including broken system elements and shared DLL problems, while also offering settings adjustments, temporary-file cleanup, privacy warnings, vulnerability checks, a real-time boost, file shredding and an app-crash log. Results vary, and no tool repairs every crash.
