What Is swcefsubproc.exe? Is It Safe, and How to Fix swcefsubproc.exe Errors on Windows

swcefsubproc.exe—usually displayed by Windows as swCefSubProc.exe—is the SOLIDWORKS Chromium Embedded Framework (CEF) subprocess. Dassault Systèmes says one or more copies can appear in Task Manager while SOLIDWORKS is running, so multiple processes alone do not indicate malware. Safety depends on where the file is installed, which program launches it, its digital signature and what it does after SOLIDWORKS closes. A copy inside the SOLIDWORKS installation with a valid Dassault Systèmes SolidWorks Corp signature is normally expected. A copy in an unrelated, user-writable folder, one that starts without SOLIDWORKS, or one linked to unwanted behavior needs investigation and a Microsoft Defender scan. The safest fix for errors is to update, repair or reinstall the owning SOLIDWORKS installation—not to download or replace the EXE by itself.

What is swcefsubproc.exe?

swcefsubproc.exe is the executable for a SOLIDWORKS CEF child process. SOLIDWORKS embeds the Chromium Embedded Framework to display web-based panels and other Chromium-powered interface components. In its documentation, Dassault Systèmes describes the component as “SOLIDWORKS CEF Sub Process, swCefSubProc.exe” and notes that one or more instances appear in Microsoft Windows Task Manager when SOLIDWORKS is in use.

The capitalization can be confusing. Windows file systems commonly treat swcefsubproc.exe and swCefSubProc.exe as the same filename, while SOLIDWORKS documentation uses the mixed-case spelling. The executable is not a complete browser and is not intended to be installed as a stand-alone utility. It is one part of a versioned CEF bundle supplied with SOLIDWORKS.

Why are several swCefSubProc.exe processes running?

Several copies can be normal because CEF3 uses a multi-process architecture. A browser process, renderer processes, GPU-related work and other helper processes are separated rather than being placed in one executable. SOLIDWORKS can therefore create more than one CEF subprocess during one session.

  • One session can create multiple helpers: a web panel, sign-in view or embedded content may use its own renderer or utility process.
  • The count can change: opening or closing panels can start or end child processes.
  • Process count is not a malware test: an unexpected path or behavior matters more than whether Task Manager lists one, three or more copies.
  • Children should normally follow SOLIDWORKS: when SOLIDWORKS closes, its CEF children should normally exit as well. A process that remains or repeatedly returns without SOLIDWORKS deserves closer inspection.

CEF’s design explains why ending every copy simply because several are visible can make SOLIDWORKS’ web interface unstable. If a helper is consuming resources or appears frozen, close SOLIDWORKS normally first and investigate the underlying installation rather than repeatedly killing individual children.

Is swcefsubproc.exe a virus?

The filename alone cannot answer that question. A genuine copy is normally associated with SOLIDWORKS, while malware can use a familiar name to appear legitimate. Verify provenance before deciding whether the file is safe.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Check Expected for a SOLIDWORKS-owned copy Warning sign
Full path A folder within the installed SOLIDWORKS or SOLIDWORKS Shared tree. A version-specific inventory lists C:Program FilesCommon FilesSOLIDWORKS Sharedswcef for some releases. A random Downloads, Temp, AppData, desktop or other user-writable directory unrelated to SOLIDWORKS.
Parent process It is launched as part of SOLIDWORKS. It starts from an unknown application, a script, a scheduled task or when SOLIDWORKS is not running.
Digital signature The file’s Properties dialog shows a credible Dassault Systèmes SolidWorks Corp signature. The signature is missing, invalid, or belongs to an unexpected publisher.
Timing It appears when SOLIDWORKS starts or when a CEF-powered panel opens. It starts at Windows logon without SOLIDWORKS or launches repeatedly after the application is closed.
Behavior It exits with the SOLIDWORKS session and does not produce unrelated pop-ups. Unwanted ads, browser changes, unknown programs or other suspicious activity accompany it.
Security scan Microsoft Defender reports no threat. Defender detects the file or related unwanted software, especially when provenance is unclear.

The listed Common FilesSOLIDWORKS Sharedswcef location is a version-specific clue, not a universal path guarantee. Install location, release and administrator choices can differ. Use the complete path and signature together with the parent process; do not classify a file solely by its name or by one path found on another computer.

How do I verify which swcefsubproc.exe is running?

Record the file’s origin before deleting, quarantining or allowing anything. These checks use Windows’ built-in Task Manager and file properties.

  1. Open Task Manager. Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc. If the process is not visible on the main Processes page, select Details.
  2. Locate the executable. Find swCefSubProc.exe (or the lowercase spelling), right-click it and choose Open file location. Record the complete folder and filename.
  3. Compare the folder with SOLIDWORKS. The path should belong to the installed SOLIDWORKS or SOLIDWORKS Shared tree. A path outside that tree is not automatically malicious, but it lowers confidence and requires additional checks.
  4. Check the parent relationship. Note whether SOLIDWORKS is open and whether closing it causes the child process to disappear. A child that persists or relaunches after a clean exit is abnormal enough to investigate.
  5. Inspect the signature. Right-click the file, choose Properties, open Digital Signatures and inspect the signer and signature status. A missing or unexpected signature is a reason to stop and scan, not a reason to download a replacement.
  6. Observe launch behavior. Reopen SOLIDWORKS and see whether the process appears at the same time as the application or a web-based panel. Do not infer danger from the number of copies alone.

Write down the SOLIDWORKS release and service pack while you are checking. Those details are important if the file is damaged or an update later becomes necessary.

What should I do if the copy has an unexpected path or signature?

Treat unclear provenance as a security question, not as an ordinary SOLIDWORKS repair. Do not whitelist the file or disable antivirus until its ownership is established.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Update Defender security intelligence. Use Windows Security to obtain the latest protection updates.
  2. Run a full scan. In Windows Security, open Virus & threat protection, choose Scan options, select Full scan and start it. Leave the computer available until the scan completes.
  3. Use Microsoft Defender Offline when needed. If the process returns, cannot be removed, or the behavior suggests unwanted software, select the Offline scan option in the same area. Windows restarts and scans before the normal desktop loads.
  4. Review installed applications. Open Settings → Apps and uninstall software you did not authorize. Remove the unwanted parent application rather than deleting a shared executable at random.
  5. Preserve evidence for support. Keep the path, signature result, Defender detection name and the time the process started. This information helps SOLIDWORKS support or a security professional distinguish a damaged installation from an unwanted program.

Microsoft advises downloading apps only from trusted sources and being selective about what you install. Do not obtain a replacement swCefSubProc.exe from an EXE or DLL library, a file-sharing site or another computer. An apparently identical filename can belong to a different SOLIDWORKS release—or to an unrelated program.

How do I fix a swcefsubproc.exe application error?

Use the following sequence for launch errors, missing-file messages, crashes or failures in a SOLIDWORKS web-based panel. The order moves from low-risk recovery to a supported reinstall.

1. Capture the exact failure

Before changing files, record the complete error text, the executable path, your Windows version, the SOLIDWORKS release and service pack, and when the message appears. Note whether it occurs during SOLIDWORKS startup, while opening a specific web panel or after the program has been running for a while. Also record whether Windows Security or another security product displayed an alert.

2. Close SOLIDWORKS and reboot Windows

Save work, exit SOLIDWORKS and confirm that its processes have closed. Restart Windows instead of only ending the child process. A reboot clears a stuck helper and allows pending file replacements to complete. After restarting, reproduce the error once and note whether the symptom remains.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Update SOLIDWORKS from its official channel

Install the appropriate SOLIDWORKS update or service pack through Dassault Systèmes’ official installer or update channel. CEF binaries are shipped as a matching set, so mixing a newly downloaded executable with older DLLs, resource files or locale files can create another failure. Do not copy only swCefSubProc.exe from a different release.

4. Run the supported Repair option

Open Windows’ installed-app interface or the SOLIDWORKS installer and look for Repair or Change. Choose the repair workflow for the installed SOLIDWORKS product or its CEF component when that option is offered. Back up custom settings and other needed configuration first. Let the installer restore the complete component set, then reboot and test the same action that originally failed.

5. Reinstall when repair does not work

If repair fails or the same missing-file error returns, use the supported Windows or SOLIDWORKS installer workflow to uninstall SOLIDWORKS and its affected component. Reboot, then install a current package obtained from Dassault Systèmes. Do not retain a manually downloaded helper in the old folder and do not copy files from another machine. A clean, matching installation is more reliable than replacing one executable.

6. Handle a security-product block carefully

If an antivirus or firewall blocked the file, open the product’s alert and verify the full path, signer and parent process. A SOLIDWORKS support article identifies swCefSubProc.exe among files that may need a firewall or security-product exception in some blocked environments. Create an exception only after confirming that the copy belongs to your SOLIDWORKS installation and that the alert is a false positive. Never disable antivirus broadly to make the error disappear.

7. Escalate a repeatable crash

When the crash survives an update, repair and current reinstall, contact SOLIDWORKS support. Provide the exact message, Windows version, SOLIDWORKS version and service pack, executable path, digital-signature result and relevant Event Viewer details. Include whether the process exits with SOLIDWORKS and whether security software blocked it. Those facts let support investigate a release-specific CEF problem instead of treating it as an unidentified EXE.

Should I delete swcefsubproc.exe?

No. Do not delete the file merely because Task Manager lists several copies or because its name looks unfamiliar. It is part of the SOLIDWORKS CEF bundle, and removing one executable can leave mismatched DLLs and resources behind or prevent web-based SOLIDWORKS features from opening.

  • Use the SOLIDWORKS installer’s repair, update or uninstall workflow instead of deleting a single file.
  • Never replace it with a download from an EXE/DLL library or with a file copied from another release.
  • Do not delete a suspicious copy before recording its path and scanning it; removing evidence can make a security investigation harder.
  • If Windows reports that the file is missing, restore the parent installation through a supported repair or reinstall.

Only remove a file as part of an approved uninstall or cleanup procedure for the complete SOLIDWORKS installation. A standalone deletion is not a repair strategy.

How do update, repair and reinstall differ?

Choose the least disruptive supported action that matches the evidence. The table below separates a version mismatch from a damaged installation and from a problem that survives a repair.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Option Use it when What it changes Important precaution
Update The error began after an older release, service pack or compatibility change, or a newer supported build is available. Moves SOLIDWORKS and its CEF files to a matching vendor-supplied build. Use the official installer/update channel; do not mix individual binaries.
Repair The installer offers Repair or Change and the installation appears incomplete or damaged. Restores the existing installation without manually deleting the subprocess. Back up settings and close SOLIDWORKS before starting.
Reinstall Repair fails, the same error returns, or the component is missing from a damaged installation. Removes and lays down a complete current package. Uninstall through the supported workflow, reboot, then install a current package from Dassault Systèmes.

If the file is in an unrelated folder or starts independently of SOLIDWORKS, an update may not address the real problem. Complete the security checks first and identify the parent program.

Why does antivirus block swCefSubProc.exe?

Security software can restrict an embedded-browser subprocess because it creates child processes, loads web content and communicates through local or network services. A block does not prove that the file is malicious, but a warning should never be dismissed without checking the path and signature.

  1. Open the security product’s alert and note the detection, path and action taken.
  2. Compare that path with the SOLIDWORKS installation and inspect the file’s digital signature.
  3. Confirm that the parent process is SOLIDWORKS and that the child exits when SOLIDWORKS closes.
  4. Update the security product and SOLIDWORKS, then retry the operation.
  5. If the verified file is still blocked, follow SOLIDWORKS’ documented exception procedure for your security product. Add the narrowest possible exception rather than disabling protection globally.
  6. If the path, signer or behavior is suspicious, do not create an exception; run full and Offline Defender scans instead.

What signs point to a damaged SOLIDWORKS installation rather than malware?

A damaged installation usually fails in a repeatable SOLIDWORKS context: the message appears at startup or when one embedded panel opens, the executable sits in the expected SOLIDWORKS tree, and the signature identifies Dassault Systèmes SolidWorks Corp. Malware or unwanted software is more likely when the copy is unrelated to SOLIDWORKS, launches on its own, persists after shutdown or arrives with ads, browser changes or unauthorized programs.

What information should I collect for SOLIDWORKS support?

Support can work faster when the report identifies both the software build and the exact child process. Include:

  • The full error text, including any Windows error code.
  • The complete path shown by Open file location.
  • The SOLIDWORKS release and service pack.
  • Your Windows edition and version.
  • Whether the failure occurs at launch or in a particular web-based panel.
  • Whether one or multiple CEF subprocesses appear.
  • The digital-signature signer and status.
  • Whether the process exits when SOLIDWORKS closes.
  • Any firewall or antivirus alert, including the action taken.
  • Relevant Event Viewer entries captured at the time of the crash.

Do not attach an executable from an untrusted source or follow instructions to replace only the subprocess. The path, version and signature are more useful than an isolated copy of the file.

As an optional shortcut after the manual checks, Outbyte PC Repair can address more than 100 common Windows issues where possible, including broken system elements, invalid redirects and shared DLL problems, and it offers settings tweaks, temporary and cache cleanup, privacy tools, vulnerability checks, a real-time boost, a file shredder and an app-crash log. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7; its free trial is offered by category for at least two days before a paid subscription. It complements antivirus software rather than replacing it, results vary, and no tool repairs every crash.

Frequently asked questions

Can I end swCefSubProc.exe in Task Manager?

You can end a child process as a temporary recovery step after SOLIDWORKS has become unresponsive, but it may close or destabilize the panel that uses it. Close SOLIDWORKS normally and restart Windows before treating repeated process termination as a fix. Persistent errors require repair, update or reinstall of the parent application.

Does swCefSubProc.exe use the internet?

It supports SOLIDWORKS features built with an embedded Chromium framework, so a panel may load web-based content. Network activity alone does not establish that the process is malicious. Verify the path, parent process and signature, then review any security alert in context.

What if the file has no Digital Signatures tab?

A missing signature lowers confidence, especially when the path is unrelated to SOLIDWORKS or the process starts independently. Record the path, avoid whitelisting it, update Defender and run a full scan followed by an Offline scan if the behavior persists. Obtain a clean component through the supported SOLIDWORKS installer rather than downloading a replacement executable.

Will reinstalling SOLIDWORKS remove my projects?

A reinstall targets the application, but project files, templates and custom settings can be stored in different locations depending on your configuration. Back up needed files and settings before uninstalling, and use the supported installer workflow. If you are unsure which folders contain shared resources, ask SOLIDWORKS support before removing the product.
