syncplus.exe is normally the main executable for Deutsche Telekom’s retired Sync-Plus application, used for Outlook calendar and contact synchronization. Legitimate copies have been recorded in C:Program Filestelekomsync-plusx86syncplus.exe (32-bit version 1.1.0.0) and C:Program Filestelekomsync-plusx64syncplus.exe (64-bit version 2.0.15.1), with Deutsche Telekom AG as publisher. The name alone does not prove that a file is safe: verify its path, digital signature, installation context and a current Defender scan.
Most Sync-Plus errors are consistent with an orphaned background process, Outlook COM or PST integration problems, or a mismatch between 32-bit and 64-bit components. Telekom stopped developing Sync-Plus and ended official downloads from autumn 2024, so the safest repair is to identify and scan the executable, clear any stuck process, then uninstall the obsolete software or move to a currently supported synchronization method rather than downloading an unofficial installer.

What is syncplus.exe?
syncplus.exe is the Windows program file used by Deutsche Telekom’s Sync-Plus client. Sync-Plus integrated with Outlook to synchronize items such as contacts and calendars. Telekom support records show the launcher reporting the installed Outlook version and whether it is 32-bit or 64-bit, which is important when diagnosing failures.

Support logs also show installations written with capitalized folders, such as C:Program FilesTelekomSync-Plusx64SyncPlus.exe and the equivalent x86 directory. Windows paths are not case-sensitive, so capitalization by itself is not suspicious. A copy in a different directory still requires investigation.
Is syncplus.exe safe?
A file in the Telekom Sync-Plus Program Files directory with a valid Deutsche Telekom AG digital signature and a matching installation is plausibly legitimate. The filename by itself is not authentication: malicious software can use a familiar name, and a legitimate file can become unsafe if it has been replaced or tampered with.

Two identified Deutsche Telekom samples were reported as 0/68 detections by herdProtect in 2026. That is a point-in-time result for those particular samples, not a universal safety certificate for every file called syncplus.exe or for every future version. Treat it as one piece of evidence alongside the path, signature and your own current scan.
How Microsoft describes the threat distinction
Microsoft defines malware as malicious software and distinguishes potentially unwanted applications from malware. Its practical advice is to download software only from trusted sources, keep security software current, remove software you do not want, and run a full or offline scan when you have doubts. Do not create a Microsoft Defender exclusion merely because the process name looks familiar.
Signs that deserve extra caution
- The process opens from
%TEMP%, Downloads, a browser cache or an unrelated user folder instead of a Telekom Program Files directory. - The file has no signature, an invalid signature, or a signer other than Deutsche Telekom AG.
- There is no Sync-Plus installation in Windows Apps or Programs and Features, yet the process starts automatically.
- Defender or another current security product flags the file, especially after its security intelligence has been updated.
- The executable appears with a newly changed timestamp or an unexpected version while the installed application has not been updated.
Why does syncplus.exe show errors or say it is already running?
The wording points to several different failure modes. A single fix is unlikely to fit every machine, so first establish which branch matches your symptoms.

A background process did not close
Telekom discussions describe Sync-Plus stopping after a Windows update and then reporting that it was already running. This is consistent with a background process that remained in memory after the visible window closed. Starting a second copy then fails because the launcher sees the first process.

Support logs show SyncPlus.exe launching alongside Outlook.Application.16 and throwing COM exceptions while looking for an Outlook PST data file. Another report records an x86 Sync-Plus build with Office 2019 on Windows 10 and an Outlook COM interface error. These reports make Outlook integration, the PST location and component bitness plausible causes; they do not establish that the executable is malware.
32-bit and 64-bit components do not match
Sync-Plus supplied separate x86 and x64 builds. Outlook’s bitness and the Sync-Plus build need to be compatible for COM integration. A 32-bit Outlook installation, a 64-bit Sync-Plus component, and an outdated launcher can produce failures even when each file is genuine.
The product is obsolete
A Telekom support representative stated that Sync-Plus is being retired, will no longer be developed for Windows or Android from autumn 2024, and is no longer available for download. Existing installations may continue to run, but support is limited to unavailable. A new Windows update, Outlook change or account-side change can therefore expose a problem that will not receive a product patch.
How do I verify the exact syncplus.exe file?
Do this before deleting, replacing or allowing an unfamiliar copy to run. The goal is to identify the executable that is actually active, not a similarly named file elsewhere on the disk.

- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager. If the compact view appears, select More details.
- On the Details tab, find
syncplus.exe. If it is under an app entry on the Processes tab, expand that entry first. - Right-click the process and choose Open file location. Record the complete path, including whether it is under
x86orx64. - Right-click the file, choose Properties, and inspect Details for the version and publisher. On Digital Signatures, select the signer and choose Details to confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid.
- Compare the path and version with the recorded Telekom locations and builds. A matching path is reassuring, but retain the other evidence rather than treating it as proof.
- In Settings > Apps > Installed apps (or Control Panel > Programs and Features on older Windows), check whether Sync-Plus is actually installed and whether its publisher is Deutsche Telekom.
If Open file location leads to a temporary or unrelated folder, do not launch the file again while you investigate. Preserve the path and signature details for your security scan or technical support.
How should I scan syncplus.exe before repairing it?
Use a current Microsoft Defender scan before attempting a reinstall or manually changing files. Scanning first prevents you from troubleshooting a potentially replaced executable as though it were an ordinary Outlook problem.
- Open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Protection updates and select Check for updates so the security intelligence is current.
- Return to Virus & threat protection, choose Scan options, select Full scan, and start the scan. A full scan can take considerably longer than a quick scan.
- If suspicion remains, use Microsoft Defender Offline scan from the same Scan options page. Save your work first; Windows restarts and scans before the normal desktop loads.
- For a second Microsoft diagnostic option, run the current Microsoft Safety Scanner obtained from Microsoft’s official site. Download a fresh copy when you use it because the scanner expires after a limited period.
Quarantine or remove a detection according to Defender’s instructions. Do not restore a flagged file merely because its filename resembles the Telekom program. If the scan is clean but the path or signature is wrong, keep the process disabled and investigate the installation source.
How do I fix “SyncPlus already running” safely?
Clear the old process without deleting program files, then test once. This addresses the failure mode in which Sync-Plus stopped visibly but remained active in the background.

- Close Outlook and any visible Sync-Plus or Sync-Plus Launcher window. Wait a minute for normal shutdown.
- Open Task Manager and inspect both Processes and Details for
syncplus.exe, a Sync-Plus launcher, or a related Telekom process. - If a process remains, select it and choose End task. Do not end Outlook processes that belong to other work unless you have saved open documents.
- Restart Windows. This clears a process that Task Manager could not close cleanly and reloads Outlook integration in a known state.
- Start Outlook first, allow it to finish loading, and then start Sync-Plus once. If the message returns immediately, stop retrying and continue with the Outlook and bitness checks below.
How do I troubleshoot Outlook COM, PST and bitness errors?
Capture the configuration before changing it. The support logs show that Windows version, Outlook version, Outlook bitness and Sync-Plus logs materially affect diagnosis.

Record the versions and logs
- In Windows, open Settings > System > About and note the Windows edition and version.
- In Outlook, open File > Office Account > About Outlook. The dialog identifies the Outlook version and whether it is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- Open the Sync-Plus or Launcher log folder referenced by the installation and copy the relevant error text, especially COM exceptions and messages about a PST data file.
- Note whether the error began immediately after a Windows or Office update and whether Outlook can open the affected profile normally without Sync-Plus.
Check the Outlook data file and profile
Do not move or delete a PST simply to make the error disappear. In Outlook, use File > Account Settings > Account Settings > Data Files to confirm that the expected data file is listed and its path is accessible. If Outlook itself reports that the file is missing or damaged, repair the Outlook profile or data file through Microsoft’s supported procedures before blaming Sync-Plus.
Check x86/x64 compatibility
Compare the Outlook bitness with the Sync-Plus directory shown in Task Manager. An x86 Sync-Plus installation paired with 64-bit Outlook, or the reverse, may fail at the COM interface even when the publisher is genuine. Because Telekom no longer provides current installers, do not attempt to mix files from different builds or copy an x86 executable into an x64 directory.
How do I uninstall syncplus.exe and remove obsolete components?
Uninstalling is the supported path when synchronization is no longer essential or the installation is damaged. Use Windows’ uninstaller rather than deleting the executable first.

- If the entry is missing, open the Telekom installation directory and look for
Sync-PlusUninstall.exe. Run it only after verifying that the folder is the signed, expected Telekom installation. - Close Outlook when the uninstaller requests it and allow the removal to finish. Do not interrupt it by manually deleting files.
- Restart Windows. Then check Task Manager to ensure that no Sync-Plus process starts again.
- Only after the restart, look for leftover Sync-Plus folders or AppData files. Remove remnants only when you are certain they belong to Sync-Plus; never delete Outlook profiles, PST files or unrelated Telekom data.
- Run another Defender scan if the original file was in an unexpected location or if the uninstaller reported errors.
Should I reinstall Sync-Plus from a download site?
No. Telekom says official downloads ended when Sync-Plus entered retirement in autumn 2024. An installer from an unofficial download site could be modified, bundled with unwanted software or simply be an incompatible old build. If you still need calendar or contact synchronization, choose a currently supported method from the service or account provider and verify its publisher, Windows compatibility and Outlook requirements before installing it.

No. That result applies to two identified samples at the time of the 2026 scan. Your own file can differ, so its path, Deutsche Telekom signature, installation context and current Defender result still matter.
Why did the error appear after a Windows or Office update?
An update can leave a background process open or change Outlook’s COM behavior, profile access or bitness interaction. Sync-Plus is retired, so compatibility issues exposed by an update may not receive a vendor patch.
