tally72migration.exe is Tally’s legacy migration utility for moving Tally 7.2-compatible company data through Tally.ERP 9 before it is moved to TallyPrime. It is not a normal Windows process. A legitimate copy should come from Tally’s official download or the matching Tally.ERP 9 application folder, but the filename alone cannot prove that a file is safe. Verify its location and digital signature, scan the exact executable with Microsoft Defender, and back up your company data before repairing or migrating it. Most errors are caused by a missing or mismatched migration tool, blocked ports, firewall or antivirus interference, XML-reading problems, interrupted work, or damaged company data. The steps below match each failure to the least risky manual fix.
What is tally72migration.exe and where does it belong?
Tally documents tally72migration.exe as the utility used for the Tally 7.2-compatible stage of a legacy-data migration. The documented path is from an older Tally release through Tally.ERP 9 and then onward to TallyPrime. The executable works with the Tally application; it is not a stand-alone Windows component and should not be expected on a PC that has never used this migration workflow.

For the legacy process, Tally’s instructions say to install Tally.ERP 9 and TallyPrime, obtain the utility from Tally, copy it into the Tally.ERP 9 application folder, run it with the Tally application, select Migrate Data, choose the data directory and company, and continue. When the migration reports an error, the log is written as migration.err in the Tally.ERP 9 folder.
Do not confuse this file with tallymigrationtool.exe. Current TallyPrime help uses that name for a different migration workflow and describes repairing the TallyPrime installation when that tool is missing. Copying one executable over the other can create a version mismatch and make diagnosis harder.

Is tally72migration.exe safe to run?
It is expected when Tally supplied it for the matching legacy migration and the file is in the corresponding Tally.ERP 9 application directory. That role does not make every file with the same name trustworthy: malware can be renamed, and a download can be modified. There is no universal hash or certificate fingerprint that authenticates every copy, so check the actual file on your computer.
1. Confirm the source and path
Prefer the copy obtained through Tally’s official download channel or the Tally.ERP 9 folder used by the documented migration. Treat a copy from a random executable repository, an unsolicited message, or an unexpected temporary directory as untrusted until it is verified. If you received a replacement file from another computer, stop and obtain a matching release from Tally instead.

2. Inspect the digital signature
In File Explorer, right-click the executable, choose Properties, and open Digital Signatures. Review the signer and whether Windows reports that the signature is valid. Microsoft’s SignTool documentation gives this verification form:
signtool verify /pa tally72migration.exeRun the command from the folder containing the file, or provide its full path. A missing or invalid signature is a reason to replace the file with an official copy, not a reason to disable Windows security.
3. Scan the exact file
Right-click the file in File Explorer and select Scan with Microsoft Defender. On some Windows builds you must first choose Show more options. Let the scan finish before opening the utility. A SmartScreen reputation warning by itself is not proof of malware, but an unsigned or unsolicited download deserves additional caution and independent verification.

4. Keep security controls narrow
Tally identifies firewall and antivirus interference as possible migration causes. Do not turn protection off broadly. If you must test a blocked port or executable, use a narrowly scoped, temporary rule for the configured migration port, retry the operation, and remove the exception when finished.

What should you do before repairing or migrating?
Make a second copy of the company-data folder on a USB flash drive before you repair or migrate. Keep the original backup untouched, label it with the date and Tally release, and make sure no other user or process is writing to the live folder. Tally warns that partial data repair can involve data loss, and an interrupted migration can leave work that must be resumed or restarted.
- Confirm the backup opens or can be copied back before changing the live data.
- Close company files and any other Tally sessions that use the data directory.
- Record the current data path, Tally.ERP 9 version, TallyPrime version, and the exact error text.
- Keep
migration.errand any other logs; support may need them.
How do you fix “application files are corrupted or missing”?
This message usually means the migration-tool version does not match the Tally installation, or the utility is corrupted, deleted, or absent from its designated directory. Repair the installation instead of downloading a similarly named executable from an unrelated site.
- Open Tally and press F1 (Help).
- Choose Troubleshooting, then Repair/Re-install Application.
- Select Repair and allow the process to complete.
- Restart Tally, verify that the utility is in the intended Tally.ERP 9 application folder, and retry the migration.
Do not copy tally72migration.exe from a different Tally release into the current folder. A file that starts successfully can still be incompatible with the data format or the surrounding application files.
How do you handle an internal error or migration-tool crash?
Tally lists several causes for an internal error: a crashed process, a missing tool, an unavailable or blocked port, firewall or antivirus interference, and an XML-reading failure. Match the recovery to the symptom rather than repeatedly launching the executable.

- Restart TallyPrime and open the company again. If its status is Continue Migration, choose that option and let Tally resume the operation.
- If the tool is missing, use the application repair path above and retry with the matching release.
- Review the configured migration port and make sure the same port is allowed for the required inbound and outbound traffic.
- For an XML-related message, correct the port or security block first, then retry. Preserve the XML and migration logs if the error remains.
- If the crash repeats after repair, a valid backup, and a narrowly scoped port check, contact Tally Support with the error text and
migration.err.
How do you fix a “port unavailable” error?
The executable can be intact while another service, a second Tally session, or a firewall rule prevents it from binding to the configured port. Change both Tally port settings together.
- Open TallyPrime’s Data Configuration.
- Update Migration Tool Port and TallyPrime Port to available values that are permitted by your local firewall.
- Save the configuration with Ctrl+A.
- Close and reopen the affected Tally session, then retry the migration.
If the new port is still unavailable, check for another application using it and review only the corresponding inbound and outbound firewall rules. Do not create a broad “allow any port” rule.
What if the company data is corrupted?
Repair the company in the previous compatible Tally release before attempting migration. Start with the untouched backup, because Tally warns that partial repair may lose data.
- Make and preserve the USB and separate local backups described above.
- Open the company in the prior compatible release and run its data-repair function.
- After repair, start the migration again and enable Backup Company Data before Migration.
- Keep the original pre-repair copy even if the repaired company appears to open normally.
If repair reports additional corruption or produces inconsistent results, stop changing the only copy and escalate to authorized Tally support. A successful launch does not prove that every transaction or master record is intact.
How do you recover from an interrupted or stuck migration?
Tally says an interrupted migration can normally be resumed, although a restart may be required when the data cannot safely continue. Do not force-stop an active migration: Tally warns, “Attempting to force migration to stop during the process might damage the data.”

- Close documents and applications that have files open in the company-data folder.
- Confirm that the Windows account running Tally has read, write, and modify permissions for the data and application folders.
- Check whether security software has blacklisted the executable or blocked the migration port; use only a temporary, narrowly scoped exception if required.
- Restart Tally and resume the company. If Tally requests a restart from the beginning, use the preserved backup and follow that instruction rather than killing the process.
How do you fix “Data path specified for more than one Tally.ini”?
This message indicates that the application is finding more than one configured data path. Open Tally.ini in the Tally application folder and remove the extra data-path entry. Tally’s FAQ also recommends setting Default Companies to No, then loading the migration tool again. Keep a copy of the original Tally.ini before editing it so you can restore the previous configuration if needed.
What is the correct legacy migration sequence?
Use this order when the installation and data are healthy:
- Install the required Tally.ERP 9 and TallyPrime versions.
- Download
tally72migration.exefrom Tally’s official channel for the legacy workflow. - Copy it into the Tally.ERP 9 application folder documented for the installation.
- Run the Tally application and select Migrate Data.
- Choose the correct data directory and company.
- Enable Backup Company Data before Migration when available, then continue.
- After completion, review the result and retain
migration.errif any warning or failure was recorded.
Do not substitute the current TallyPrime migration executable, mix files from different releases, or point the utility at a live folder that another user is editing.

Can you delete tally72migration.exe?
It is not required for ordinary Windows startup, so Windows itself does not need it. However, deleting it from the Tally.ERP 9 application folder can prevent a future legacy migration and may leave the installation in the same missing-file state that triggered the error. Keep a verified copy until every relevant migration is complete; if the file is suspicious, quarantine it and obtain a clean, matching replacement rather than deleting the only copy and continuing blindly.

When should you escalate to Tally support?
Escalate when a verified, matching utility still crashes after application repair; the company cannot resume or open from a known-good backup; repair reports data loss; or port, XML, permissions, and security checks do not resolve the error. Provide the exact message, Tally versions, data path, migration status, migration.err, and a description of the backup and repair steps already attempted. An authorized support or data-repair service can assess cases where the documented local fixes are no longer sufficient.
