Microsoft’s malware-cleaning guidance treats an unfamiliar location, missing publisher information, an absent signature, or a suspicious service as warning signs that deserve investigation. Microsoft also cautions that these signs alone do not conclusively prove that a process is malicious. Confirm the file’s identity and package provenance before deleting or disabling anything.
How can I tell whether my copy of tbtsvc.exe is legitimate?
Use the same checks an administrator would use to distinguish a normal driver problem from a renamed or substituted executable. Record what you find before making changes.
1. Record the complete path and service name
- Open Task Manager with
Ctrl+Shift+Esc. - Find

4. Confirm the installed package and hardware

Why is tbtsvc.exe running?
The Thunderbolt service is designed to run in the background so Windows can initialize Thunderbolt hardware and respond when a compatible device is connected. Background activity is therefore normal when the software and hardware are installed.

1. Capture the state before changing it
- Write down the exact error text or event message, including any error number such as
1603. - Record the Windows edition and build, the Thunderbolt device or computer model, the complete
tbtsvc.exepath, the service name, and the signer shown in Properties. - Note whether the file exists, whether the service is running, and whether a scheduled task references it.

6. Reinstall the official package after cleanup
Once the suspicious file and any related auto-start entry have been handled, restart Windows and install the official Thunderbolt package for the computer. Verify the new file’s path and Intel signature, then recheck the service and connected hardware. If the alert returns, preserve the scan details and contact the computer maker or a qualified incident-response administrator instead of repeatedly restoring the flagged executable.
