tdigraph.exe is normally Ross-Tech’s TDI Timing Checker, a plug-in installed with VCDS or VCDS-Lite. It graphs injection timing on VE TDI diesel engines; it is not intended for PD (unit-injector) or CR (common-rail) engines. A legitimate copy must be started from VCDS/VCDS-Lite’s TDI Timing control, not by double-clicking the executable. The filename alone does not prove that a file is safe: unrelated or repacked copies with the same name have been detected as malware. Check the complete path, digital signer, hash and antivirus result before running, deleting or restoring any copy.
What does tdigraph.exe do?
Ross-Tech describes its component as a plug-in that checks injection timing on a VE TDI engine. VCDS reads the engine’s measuring data, and TDI Timing plots timing against fuel temperature so you can see whether the setting falls inside the specified area. The checker is a diagnostic display, not a general Windows utility and not a standalone timing calculator.

VCDS and VCDS-Lite normally include the executable. The supported workflow is to start the diagnostic program, connect to the vehicle, enter the engine controller, open Measuring Blocks, choose the appropriate group, switch to Basic Settings and then press TDI Timing. The plug-in receives the data from that session and draws the graph.
Ross-Tech explicitly limits the checker to VE (rotary-pump) TDI engines. PD engines use unit injectors and CR engines use common-rail injection, so their timing data and procedures are different. Running the plug-in against an unsupported engine will not turn it into a compatible diagnostic tool.

Is tdigraph.exe safe?
A copy installed as part of an authentic Ross-Tech package can be legitimate, but the filename is not a safety verdict. Malware authors can rename another program, bundle a modified executable with an unofficial download or place a malicious file in a folder that resembles a real installation. Identify the particular file on your computer before deciding whether to run or remove it.
Check the path, signer and origin
- In Task Manager, right-click the process and choose Open file location, or right-click the file in File Explorer and choose Properties. Record the complete path and file name.
C:Ross-TechVCDSis a documented default location for VCDS, but a matching folder does not prove authenticity. A copied or replaced file can be put there.- Open the Digital Signatures tab, when present, and inspect the signer and whether Windows reports that the signature is valid. A missing or invalid signature is a reason to stop and verify the package, not proof by itself that the file is malware.
- Think about how the file arrived. An executable supplied by an official Ross-Tech installation is materially different from one obtained from a crack, peer-to-peer transfer, unsolicited email or an “EXE fix” site. Do not launch a file from an unexpected source.
Compare a cryptographic hash
For a repeatable identity check, calculate a hash from an elevated or ordinary PowerShell window (you do not need to execute the program):
Get-FileHash 'C:pathtoTDIGraph.exe' -Algorithm SHA256
Compare that value with a known-good file from your organization or a freshly downloaded official installer. A hash identifies the exact bytes; it does not by itself say whether those bytes are desirable, so use it alongside the signer, source and security scan.

These entries apply to the listed hashes, not to every executable carrying the name. Do not infer an infection rate or conclude that an authentic Ross-Tech installation is malicious solely because the same filename appears in a telemetry database. Conversely, do not dismiss a warning merely because the file name looks familiar.

Do not add an exclusion or restore the file just to make VCDS start. Keep the original file quarantined or preserved according to your security team’s procedure, update Microsoft Defender security intelligence and run a full scan. If unwanted software remains or the alert returns, use Microsoft Defender Offline, which scans outside the normal Windows session. Obtain replacement software only from the official vendor rather than from a download site offering a single DLL or EXE.
Why does tdigraph.exe show an error?
Most “tdigraph.exe” errors are caused by the launch context, an incomplete VCDS installation, incompatible engine data, interface communication or Windows restrictions. The same message can have different causes, so match the symptom to the branch below.
You double-clicked TDIGraph.exe
Ross-Tech says the TDI Timing Checker works only as a plug-in. Direct execution starts it without the VCDS session, measuring data or controls it expects, so an error or an empty graph is normal in that situation. Close the window and start the function from inside VCDS or VCDS-Lite.
The executable or a component is missing
A partial copy, an interrupted update, a damaged disk file or an antivirus quarantine can leave VCDS without the plug-in. A replacement downloaded from an unrelated “DLL repair” page is not a safe repair. Reinstall or repair VCDS from Ross-Tech’s package on the local hard disk and retain the documented folder structure.

VCDS cannot communicate with the vehicle
The graph cannot populate if the interface, ignition or port configuration is wrong. Current VCDS requires a licensed Ross-Tech interface, such as HEX-V2 or HEX-NET, rather than an unsupported adapter. In VCDS Options, select the correct port, press Test, confirm the result and save the configuration before opening TDI Timing.
The engine is PD or CR
TDIGraph is for VE TDI engines only. A PD or CR vehicle can be perfectly healthy while this plug-in refuses to provide a valid graph. Use the timing or injection procedure specified for that engine family instead of trying to force the VE checker to run.
Windows blocks the installation
The current VCDS release identified in the documentation is 26.9. It supports Windows 7, 8, 10 and 11 in both 32-bit and 64-bit editions. Windows 10 and 11 in S mode are not supported because S mode restricts where desktop software can be installed. On a supported edition, install VCDS locally and avoid placing the current release under C:Program Files, which Ross-Tech says is not the appropriate location for modern VCDS.
How do I fix tdigraph.exe errors manually?
Work through these steps in order. Stop when the symptom is explained; do not delete a file before you have established whether it is the legitimate plug-in or a suspicious look-alike.

- Note whether the error appears after a direct double-click, while VCDS is opening, after pressing TDI Timing, or during a vehicle connection test.
- Write down the full message and the path shown in Task Manager or File Explorer. “File not found,” “cannot communicate” and “unsupported engine” require different remedies.
- If Windows Security or another scanner names the file, record the detection and hash before taking further action.
2. Launch the plug-in through VCDS
- Close any directly opened TDIGraph window.
- Start VCDS or VCDS-Lite from its installed shortcut.
- Connect the vehicle interface, switch the vehicle ignition on and wait for VCDS to recognize the interface.
- Open the engine module, enter Measuring Blocks, choose the measuring group required by the vehicle, switch to Basic Settings, and press TDI Timing.
- Perform the check with the engine at operating temperature, as required by the documented workflow. The plug-in should then plot timing and fuel-temperature samples from the active session.
3. Verify the vehicle and timing procedure
- Confirm that the engine is a VE TDI. Do not use this graph for PD or CR engines.
- Use the vehicle’s applicable measuring group and Basic Settings mode; selecting an unrelated group cannot produce a meaningful timing plot.
- If the engine is not a VE TDI, stop using TDIGraph and follow the procedure intended for that engine family.
4. Test the licensed interface
- Connect a supported licensed Ross-Tech interface, such as HEX-V2 or HEX-NET, directly to the vehicle and computer.
- Turn the ignition on without starting the engine.
- In VCDS, open Options, select the correct communication port and click Test.
- Save the configuration after a successful test, then reopen the engine controller and retry the TDI Timing button.
If the interface test fails, repairing TDIGraph itself will not restore communication. Check the cable and vehicle power, then resolve the interface configuration before attempting the graph again.

5. Repair a damaged or incomplete installation
- Close VCDS and any related diagnostic windows.
- Check whether the executable is in the expected Ross-Tech installation folder and whether security software has quarantined it or another required component.
- Remove or repair the existing VCDS installation using Windows’ installed-app controls, following your organization’s backup policy for settings.
- Download the current VCDS package only from Ross-Tech, install it on the local hard disk and keep the default folder arrangement. For current releases, do not choose
Program Filesas the destination. - Restart Windows, run the interface test again and open TDI Timing from inside VCDS rather than launching the executable directly.
6. Resolve a Windows compatibility block
Check Settings > System > About to confirm the Windows edition and whether it is 32-bit or 64-bit. VCDS release 26.9 supports Windows 7, 8, 10 and 11 in both architectures, but Windows 10/11 S mode is excluded. If the computer is in S mode, use a supported Windows edition or a different diagnostic computer instead of bypassing the restriction with an untrusted installer.
7. Handle a suspicious copy safely
- Disconnect the computer from the vehicle; do not run an unverified executable while it has access to diagnostic hardware.
- Let Microsoft Defender or your managed security product quarantine the file. Update security intelligence first, then run a full scan.
- If the warning persists, run Microsoft Defender Offline and follow the result shown after Windows restarts.
- Preserve the suspicious file or its hash only when your security process requires analysis. Do not send it to other people or restore it merely because VCDS is missing the plug-in.
- After the system is clean, install VCDS again from the official source and verify the new file’s signer and hash.
Can I delete tdigraph.exe?
Deletion depends on identity and whether you still use VCDS. If the file is a verified component of an installation you need, deleting it will remove the TDI Timing function and may leave VCDS in a damaged state; repair or uninstall VCDS instead. If the file is an unexpected copy, has an invalid provenance or matches a security detection, quarantine it first and complete a full/offline scan. Only remove it permanently after your security procedure and any required evidence retention are complete.
A file in C:Ross-TechVCDS is not automatically safe, and a file outside that path is not automatically malicious. Path, signer, hash, source and scanner result must be considered together.

This decision avoids two opposite mistakes: deleting a needed, legitimate plug-in because it was launched incorrectly, or running a dangerous copy because its name resembles the Ross-Tech component.
