teams_windows_x64_s_8d83938872e20fd-7-0_.exe is a filename that matches an older Microsoft Teams Windows 64-bit download or bootstrapper pattern. The embedded token is not documented publicly, so the name alone cannot prove that a particular copy is genuine or safe. Treat it as a clue: verify that the file came from Microsoft, check its Microsoft Corporation digital signature, and scan it before opening it. If Teams will not install or update, the usual causes are an unsupported or unpatched Windows/WebView2 environment, security or DLP software, blocked MSIX policy, network and DNS failures, Delivery Optimization problems, or stale classic-Teams components. The sections below show how to identify the file, verify it, repair either new or classic Teams, and decide whether an old copy can be deleted.
What does teams_windows_x64_s_8d83938872e20fd-7-0_.exe mean?
The name follows a tokenized Windows x64 Teams download pattern rather than the name of a normal document or game executable. An instructional installation PDF shows the same form, Teams_windows_x64_s_8D7DA30A7033904-7-0_.exe, downloaded from Microsoft’s Teams content-delivery domain. Microsoft has also documented a Teams Windows x64 CDN pattern using a versioned path such as https://statics.teams.cdn.office.net/production-windows-x64/Y.Y.Y.Y/Teams_windows_x64.exe.

8d83938872e20fd, so it cannot be used as a checksum or ownership proof. - -7-0_ is part of the bootstrapper naming convention; it is not, by itself, a Teams version number that you can compare with the version shown in the app.
A filename can be copied, renamed, or generated by an unofficial repackager. Authenticity comes from the download source, the signature, and the file’s behavior—not from the string of characters before .exe.
Is this Teams executable safe to run?
It can be legitimate when obtained through Microsoft’s Teams download flow and signed by Microsoft Corporation, but the filename alone is insufficient evidence. Use the following checks before you run it.

1. Confirm the source and location
Prefer a download initiated from Microsoft’s current Teams distribution page or an organization’s managed software portal. A copy in your Downloads folder after a deliberate download is easier to explain than one that arrived as an email attachment, a chat attachment, a cracked-software bundle, or an unofficial mirror. Microsoft’s message protection can block some high-risk file types and warns about suspicious links; that protection applies to files shared in Teams messages and does not certify an EXE already saved on your computer.
2. Check the digital signature
- Right-click the EXE in File Explorer and choose Properties.
- Open the Digital Signatures tab. Select the signer and choose Details.
- Confirm that the signer is Microsoft Corporation and that Windows reports the signature as valid. Open the certificate details if you need to check the certificate chain and validity dates.
- Close the dialog without running the file if the tab is missing, the signature is invalid, or the signer is not Microsoft Corporation.
The signature check applies to the file you possess. It does not prove that a similarly named file from another site is safe, and a valid signature should not override an unexpected source or suspicious behavior.
3. Scan before execution
Use Windows Security or your organization’s endpoint-protection product to scan the file. If a company security team manages the computer, send the hash, source URL, and detection details to that team rather than attempting to bypass a warning. Do not disable antivirus globally to force an installer to run.
4. Treat an unexpected path as a stop signal
An EXE that appears in a temporary folder, a browser cache, or a location created by an unknown process deserves extra scrutiny. Do not execute it merely because its name resembles a Teams installer; obtain a fresh copy through an approved Microsoft channel.
Where is Teams installed now, and why does the path matter?
New Teams and classic Teams use different deployment technologies. Microsoft’s current deployment guidance says new Teams uses an MSIX package, while older classic Teams installations use a separate installer model.
| Teams generation | Typical executable or package location | What this means for troubleshooting |
|---|---|---|
| New Teams | C:Program FilesWindowsAppsMSTeams_[appversion]_[cpu arch]__8wekyb3d8bbwe, containing ms-teams.exe and ms-teamsupdate.exe |
The folder name changes when the package version changes. Ordinary users cannot write to the protected WindowsApps directory, which reduces the risk of local file replacement. |
| Classic Teams | User or machine-wide installation locations created by the classic installer | A complete classic uninstall requires removing both Microsoft Teams and Teams Machine-Wide Installer. |
Microsoft says the MSIX installer and all files in the same directory are signed with a Microsoft certificate. That statement applies to the current MSIX package; it does not authenticate an arbitrary standalone EXE copied from another website. Because the new package path changes with each update, firewall, proxy, split-tunnel, and application-control rules that hard-code an old path can break after an otherwise successful update.

Why does the EXE fail to install or update Teams?
An error that mentions the EXE is often a symptom of a wider deployment problem. Identify which branch fits your situation before changing settings.
Prerequisites or package policy
New Teams requires a current, supported Windows version and Microsoft Edge WebView2. An outdated Windows build, a missing or damaged WebView2 runtime, or policy that blocks MSIX, the Teams Meeting add-in, or the WebView2 updater can stop installation. On a managed PC, these settings may be controlled centrally and cannot be corrected from a standard user account.
Security, reliability, or DLP interference
Microsoft reports that antivirus, reliability-monitoring, and data-loss-prevention products can block or crash Teams. For new Teams, an administrator may need to review product-specific allow rules for msedgewebview2.exe, ms-teams.exe, ms-teamsupdate.exe, and msteams_autostarter.exe. The exact rule syntax depends on the security product; use a narrow, reversible rule rather than turning protection off.
Network, DNS, and update transport failures
Microsoft lists DNS or connectivity problems, timeouts, corrupted transfers, disabled Delivery Optimization, policy blocks, and unsupported Windows versions among update-failure causes. A browser that can open ordinary websites does not prove that the Teams endpoints, proxy, or update service are reachable from the affected account.

Stale classic-Teams components
On computers that moved from classic Teams to new Teams, the old application and its machine-wide installer can leave conflicting registrations or policies. Removing only one of the two classic components leaves the old deployment incomplete.
How do I verify the file and prepare Windows before retrying?
Perform these checks in order. They separate a bad download from an environment that cannot install Teams at all.

- Record the evidence. Note the full path, file size, download source, Windows edition and build, the exact error text, and whether the failure occurs for one user or every user.
- Check Windows servicing. Install pending Windows updates, restart, and confirm that the edition is still supported by your organization’s Teams deployment policy.
- Verify WebView2. In installed apps, look for Microsoft Edge WebView2 Runtime. If it is missing or an administrator has blocked its updater, ask the administrator to repair or deploy it rather than downloading an unapproved copy.
- Inspect the EXE signature. Use the Properties steps above. If the signature fails, discard the file and download a new copy from Microsoft.
- Run a security scan. Allow the scan to finish and preserve any detection name or quarantine record for support.
- Quit Teams completely. Exit Teams from its notification-area menu and confirm that no Teams update or installer process is still running before replacing files.
How can I fix a Teams installation or update error manually?
1. Repair the supported Windows and WebView2 baseline
Restart after Windows updates, then retry the installation. If WebView2 is present but damaged, use the organization’s approved software-management method to repair it. Do not substitute a random WebView2 installer from a download site; the runtime and its updater may be controlled by policy.
2. Check whether policy is blocking MSIX or related components
Ask the device administrator whether AppX/MSIX deployment, the Teams Meeting add-in, WebView2 updates, or application-control rules are restricted. A standard user can usually identify the policy problem from the error but cannot safely override it. The administrator should test the deployment in the same user context and review the Windows event and Teams diagnostic logs.
3. Restore network access and Delivery Optimization
- Test the same operation on the organization’s approved network or VPN, not an untrusted public hotspot.
- Check DNS resolution and proxy authentication with the network team when only Teams endpoints fail.
- Confirm that Delivery Optimization has not been disabled by policy if the organization relies on it for package delivery.
- Retry after a clean restart so a timed-out or partially downloaded package is not reused.
If a proxy, firewall, or split-tunnel rule was written for a previous Teams executable path, update it to account for the dynamic WindowsApps package path. Do not whitelist an entire drive or disable the firewall as a shortcut.
4. Handle security-product blocks narrowly
Give the security administrator the exact process name, event timestamp, and file path. For new Teams, Microsoft identifies msedgewebview2.exe, ms-teams.exe, ms-teamsupdate.exe, and msteams_autostarter.exe as processes that may need product-specific allow rules. The administrator should apply the smallest rule possible, test the update, and remove or tighten the rule if it is not required. A consumer should not create broad exclusions or switch off protection globally.
5. Attempt a forced package update only with administrator approval
Microsoft documents the following PowerShell command for a forced update attempt:
Add-AppxPackage https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=2196060 -ForceUpdateFromAnyVersion -ForceTargetApplicationShutdown
Run it only in an administrator-approved troubleshooting session. It downloads and applies a package through Windows’ AppX mechanism; it is not a general repair command for every Teams error. If PowerShell reports a policy, certificate, dependency, or network failure, save the complete error text instead of repeatedly forcing the update.

6. Completely remove and reinstall classic Teams
This branch is for classic Teams installations, not a reason to delete the protected WindowsApps folder used by new Teams.
- Quit Teams and wait for its processes to close.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps (or the equivalent Apps view in your Windows edition).
- Uninstall Microsoft Teams.
- Uninstall Teams Machine-Wide Installer as a separate item. Microsoft states that both items must be removed for a complete classic-Teams uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the current Teams distribution from Microsoft rather than reusing the old tokenized EXE, then verify its signature before running it.
7. Collect logs when the repair still fails
Record the timestamp, signed-in account, Windows build, Teams generation, installer source, and exact error code. Preserve Teams diagnostic logs and relevant Windows event or AppX deployment logs. Microsoft’s update-failure guidance directs administrators to collect these logs and escalate through Microsoft support when network, policy, or package repair does not resolve the problem.
Should I disable antivirus or delete security software to make Teams run?
No. Security products can interfere with Teams, but removing protection creates a larger risk and may violate an organization’s policy. Use a temporary, product-specific administrator rule only when the security team has confirmed a false positive or blocked process, then retest and roll the rule back if it does not solve the issue. A clean reinstall is preferable when the downloaded EXE is unsigned, corrupted, or from an untrusted source.
Can I delete teams_windows_x64_s_8d83938872e20fd-7-0_.exe after Teams installs?
Usually, yes, if it is a leftover installer in Downloads or another user-writable folder, Teams is installed and working, no installer or update process is using it, and you have no need to rerun that exact package. First confirm that the current app launches and that an update is not in progress. Do not delete files from C:Program FilesWindowsApps, and do not remove an EXE that your organization’s software-management system expects to retain. If you are uncertain, quarantine or move the old download to a temporary folder and observe whether Teams continues to update normally.
What is the difference between repairing new Teams and classic Teams?
The correct remedy depends on the deployment model, not on the presence of a similarly named EXE.
| Situation | Prefer this route | Avoid this mistake |
|---|---|---|
| New Teams opens but will not update | Check Windows/WebView2, network and Delivery Optimization, policy, and security events; account for the changing WindowsApps path. | Hard-coding an old executable path or deleting the current package directory. |
| New Teams is blocked before package registration | Have an administrator review MSIX/AppX policy, WebView2 deployment, and endpoint-control rules. | Running an unsigned EXE from a mirror or bypassing application control. |
| Classic Teams remains installed after migration | Uninstall both Microsoft Teams and Teams Machine-Wide Installer, restart, then obtain a current package. | Removing only the user-facing Teams entry. |
| The downloaded EXE has no valid Microsoft signature | Discard it, scan the system, and obtain a fresh copy through an approved Microsoft channel. | Renaming it, running it as administrator, or adding a broad antivirus exclusion. |
Which troubleshooting route should I choose?
- Unsigned or unexpected file: stop, scan, discard, and redownload from Microsoft.
- Valid signature but immediate launch failure: check Windows support, WebView2, and application-control policy.
- Download reaches part way and then fails: investigate DNS, proxy, firewall, Delivery Optimization, and timeout events.
- Only a migrated PC fails: identify classic Teams remnants and remove both classic components.
- Security software logs a block: involve the administrator for a narrow allow rule; do not disable protection globally.
- All manual checks pass but the update still fails: collect Teams and Windows logs and escalate with the exact error and timestamps.

Teams EXE troubleshooting: frequently asked questions
Does the hexadecimal token identify my organization or account?
There is no public documentation tying 8d83938872e20fd to a tenant, user, or machine. Treat it as a distribution/build token and rely on the source and signature for identification.

Why does the Teams folder change after an update?
New Teams is installed as an MSIX package whose WindowsApps directory includes the app version and CPU architecture. A new package version therefore creates a different folder name, which is why fixed-path firewall or proxy rules can become stale.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →What should I give support if the forced PowerShell update fails?
Provide the full PowerShell error, Windows build, Teams generation, signed-in account, network or VPN state, and the time of the attempt. Include relevant Teams and Windows diagnostic logs so an administrator can distinguish a package, policy, certificate, or transport failure.
Is deleting the installer enough to remove Teams?
No. Deleting a downloaded EXE only removes that copy of the installer. The installed app and its update components remain until you use Windows’ app-uninstall process; for classic Teams, both Microsoft Teams and Teams Machine-Wide Installer must be removed.
Can I solve a blocked update by turning off Windows Security temporarily?
Do not use a blanket security shutdown as a fix. Ask the security administrator to confirm the block and, if appropriate, create a narrow, reversible rule for the specific Teams processes before testing again.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can the filename alone prove that the installer is genuine?
No. Names can be copied or changed, and the token in this filename is not publicly documented. Verify the Microsoft Corporation signature and the download source before execution.
Recommended Free Tools
Why does a Teams update work for one Windows account but not another?
Per-user policy, profile corruption, proxy credentials, or security rules can differ between accounts. Compare the failure under a managed test account and have an administrator review user-scoped logs and policy.
What if Properties has no Digital Signatures tab?
Treat the file as untrusted and do not run it. Obtain a fresh package from an approved Microsoft channel; do not assume that a familiar filename compensates for a missing signature.
Will reinstalling new Teams remove classic Teams automatically?
Not necessarily. Classic Teams can leave Microsoft Teams and Teams Machine-Wide Installer entries behind, so check Installed apps and remove both classic components when performing a classic cleanup.
