teamviewer_setup – 2020-07-15t152821.902.exe looks like a Windows TeamViewer installer saved with a timestamp-like suffix, but the filename alone proves neither that it came from TeamViewer nor that it is safe. Treat it as untrusted until you confirm where it came from, verify its Authenticode signature, calculate a SHA-256 hash that matches the same TeamViewer version and architecture, and scan it with Microsoft Defender and SmartScreen. The safest solution is usually to delete or quarantine the old copy and download the current Windows installer from TeamViewer. What is teamviewer_setup – 2020-07-15t152821.902.exe?

Is this timestamped TeamViewer installer safe?
You cannot make a responsible yes-or-no determination from the filename. Do not double-click it, turn off SmartScreen, or install an unsigned copy merely to see what happens. Use the checks below; a failed or inconclusive check is a reason to replace the file with a fresh official download.

A herdProtect record for one historical TeamViewer setup hash listed TeamViewer GmbH as publisher and reported 0/68 detections on its 2026 analysis date. That result applies only to that exact hash and historical sample, not to every file with a similar name. In contrast, an ANY.RUN report from 2025 observed malicious and suspicious behavior, including scheduled-task persistence and files dropped from a temporary installer directory, in one TeamViewer-named download sample. These apparently conflicting examples are why origin and exact bytes matter more than a brand string.
How do I verify the file without running it?
Perform these checks in order. Keep the file closed throughout; verification tools read it without launching the installer.
- Record the source. In File Explorer, right-click the file, choose Properties, and note the folder, download date, size and any “Unblock” checkbox on the General tab. A copy from a known TeamViewer download is preferable. Treat an attachment, a cracked-game bundle, a peer-to-peer mirror or an unexplained USB copy as untrusted.
- Check the Authenticode signature. Open PowerShell and run:

Replace the path with the real location. Microsoft documents that this cmdlet reports the signature status and signer; unsigned files have blank signature fields. How do I fix a TeamViewer installer hash mismatch?
An “Installer hash does not match” message means the bytes you received do not equal the bytes identified by the package manifest or checksum. It can result from a partial download, a stale cache, a changed mirror, or comparing a different release. It does not identify the cause by itself.

- Cancel the installation and do not bypass the check.
- Delete or quarantine the mismatched copy. Also remove a stale cached copy used by the package manager or browser; retain the checksum text or error screenshot for troubleshooting.
- Download the installer again from the official TeamViewer source over a stable connection. Avoid download accelerators and mirrors while diagnosing.
- Confirm that the downloaded version and architecture are the ones named by the checksum. Re-run
Get-FileHash -Algorithm SHA256and compare the complete value character for character. - If the fresh file still differs, stop and use a newer official installer or TeamViewer’s documented older-version channel. Do not install a file merely because its filename resembles the expected one.
What should I do if the signature is invalid or SmartScreen blocks the installer?
Stop the installation. An invalid or missing Authenticode signature means Windows cannot establish the expected publisher identity, while SmartScreen’s unknown-reputation warning indicates that Microsoft has insufficient trust information even when no malware verdict is present.
Save the alert details, including the file path, detection name and hash, for your administrator or security team. Do not click through a warning by disabling SmartScreen, adding a broad exclusion, or running the file as administrator. Replace the download with a current copy from TeamViewer and repeat the signature, hash and Defender checks. If a managed endpoint-security product quarantines the file, follow its organizational review process rather than overriding the block.
Why does TeamViewer setup fail on Windows, and what fixes work?
After a verified download passes signature, hash and malware checks, installation failures are usually environmental: a damaged Windows component store, pending updates, insufficient space or permissions, a running TeamViewer process or service, or a security product preventing changes. Work through the following branches instead of repeatedly launching the same old executable.
Repair Windows component corruption with DISM, then SFC
Microsoft’s supported order is DISM first and SFC second. Open Command Prompt as an administrator (search for Command Prompt, right-click it, and select Run as administrator), then run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth- Wait for DISM to reach completion. It can appear stationary for a while; closing the window early can leave the repair incomplete.
- When DISM finishes, run
sfc /scannow. - Read the final SFC message. It may report that no integrity violations were found, that corrupt files were repaired, or that some files could not be repaired. Restart Windows after a successful repair and retry with the verified fresh installer.
DISM repairs the Windows component source that SFC relies on; running SFC first can leave it without a healthy source. These commands address Windows corruption, not an untrusted TeamViewer executable, so continue to use a freshly verified installer.

Install pending Windows updates and restart
Open Settings > Windows Update, install available updates, and restart even if Windows does not immediately request it. A pending servicing operation or restart can block another installer. After rebooting, confirm that the same verified TeamViewer file still has the expected signature and hash before running it.
Check space, permissions and folder location
Ensure the system drive has adequate free space for temporary extraction and installation. Move the verified installer to a local folder such as C:UsersPublicDownloads rather than launching it from a disconnected network share, compressed archive or read-only removable drive. Use a standard user account with permission to install software; if your organization manages the computer, an administrator may need to approve the installation. Do not grant elevation to a file that failed the signature or hash checks.
Close existing TeamViewer processes and services
Save work, then open Task Manager and look for TeamViewer processes. Close only entries you recognize, or restart Windows to clear a process that will not exit. If an existing TeamViewer service is running, use Services to stop it temporarily only when you have permission and understand the impact on remote support. Retry with the current installer; do not use an old executable simply because an existing process is present.
Review endpoint-security quarantine and logs
Check Microsoft Defender’s Protection history and any third-party endpoint-security quarantine for the exact filename and hash. A security product may block an installer because of reputation, policy or behavior in its temporary extraction phase. Preserve the detection details and ask the security administrator or TeamViewer support to validate the specific file. Never create a permanent exclusion as a workaround for an unverified download.

Yes, once you no longer need it for a documented, hash-specific investigation. Deleting teamviewer_setup - 2020-07-15t152821.902.exe removes that installer file; it does not uninstall TeamViewer already installed on Windows. If you may need evidence for an incident, quarantine the file and preserve its SHA-256 hash, source information and security alerts before deletion.
If the file is in a downloads folder and its origin or signature cannot be established, quarantine or delete it rather than archiving it for future use. Download a fresh official installer when you actually need TeamViewer. The timestamp does not prove that the build remains supported, and keeping an unverified executable increases the chance that someone will launch it later by mistake.

Run a full Microsoft Defender scan, review Protection history and inspect recently created scheduled tasks, startup entries and installed applications for changes you do not recognize. If your security product reports malicious behavior, preserve its alert details, isolate the computer according to your organization’s incident-response procedure and change credentials from a separate trusted device when advised.
If the file installed TeamViewer successfully and you can verify the installed program’s publisher and version, update or reinstall from the current official source. Do not assume that a successful installation proves the original file was genuine; installation success is not a security validation.

Can I rename the executable before checking it?
Renaming does not change the file’s bytes, so it will not alter the SHA-256 hash or Authenticode signature. You may rename it for organization, but perform verification against the renamed path and do not treat a familiar-looking name as evidence of origin.

No. That figure was reported for one historical hash on a particular analysis date. A different download, rebuild, or modified copy can have a different hash and different behavior, so verify your own file.
Can I compare the hash with a checksum from a package manager?
Only when the checksum identifies the same TeamViewer version, edition and architecture. Package metadata is tied to particular package versions; comparing a 2020 executable with a current checksum will produce a meaningless mismatch.
Will deleting the setup file remove TeamViewer from my computer?
No. The setup executable is separate from the installed application and its service. To remove an installed copy, use Windows Settings’ installed-app controls or your organization’s approved uninstall process.
