teamviewer_setup - 2020-07-15t162901.400.exe is a Windows executable name that resembles a timestamped TeamViewer installer, but the name alone cannot prove that the file is genuine or safe. It does not identify the download source, publisher signature, hash, or whether somebody modified or renamed it. Treat an unexplained copy as untrusted: do not open it, verify its digital signature and provenance, scan it, and replace it with a current download from the official TeamViewer download portal. The portal displayed TeamViewer version 15.82.6 on October 26, 2026, but versions change, so use the live listing rather than searching for a 2020 filename.
What does teamviewer_setup - 2020-07-15t162901.400.exe mean?
The string is a filename, not a security credential. teamviewer_setup suggests an installer, while 2020-07-15t162901.400 looks like a date, time, and millisecond stamp: July 15, 2020, at 16:29:01.400. That interpretation is plausible naming metadata, but it is not a cryptographic hash, a release number, or proof that TeamViewer created the file.

The normal TeamViewer installation guidance uses a simpler name such as TeamViewer_Setup.exe and tells users to verify the publisher as TeamViewer Germany GmbH. A timestamped name may be a legitimate old download, a renamed copy, a damaged partial download, or malware using a familiar product name. No filename-only test can distinguish those cases.
- What the name can suggest: the file may have been saved by an installer or download process around the date shown.
- What it cannot establish: who supplied it, whether the contents are intact, whether it is signed, which TeamViewer release it contains, or whether it has been altered.
- What settles the question: the actual file’s source, Windows signature status, hash comparison with a trusted vendor value when one is available, and malware scanning.
Is this TeamViewer executable safe to run?
There is not enough evidence to call this exact file safe. A copy downloaded directly from TeamViewer, signed by TeamViewer Germany GmbH, and accepted by a current security scanner is materially different from an unexplained executable received in a message, bundled with cracked software, or recovered from an old archive. Until those checks pass, quarantine the file and do not double-click it.

Why the filename is not authentication
Anyone can rename an executable. The timestamp-like suffix is easy to copy and does not bind the file to a particular certificate or release. Even a perfectly spelled TeamViewer name can conceal a modified binary or a malicious program that merely imitates the name.
What a valid signature tells you
Windows Authenticode signing associates a file with a publisher certificate and detects changes made after signing. Microsoft explains that verifying a signature checks that the file was not altered since signing and that it came from a trusted source. A valid signature is strong evidence about file integrity and publisher identity, but it does not tell you that an old build is current or appropriate for your situation.

Why a real TeamViewer file still deserves caution
Legitimate remote-access software is attractive to attackers because it can provide interactive control. Microsoft has documented a TeamViewer-named backdoor that created files such as %TEMP%teamviewer_resource_en.dll, injected code into processes, and enabled remote control. NHS England Digital also described MineBridge campaigns in which an outdated, legitimate TeamViewer copy was renamed and used for DLL side-loading. Those reports do not prove that this particular executable is malicious; they explain why source, signature, version, and surrounding activity all matter.
How can I check the file without running it?
Use the following sequence on Windows. It keeps the unknown executable inert until you have evidence that it is the file you intended to obtain.

- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
- Quarantine the copy. If it came from an unsolicited email, chat, script, file-sharing site, cracked-software package, or an old backup, move it to a separate folder or let your security product quarantine it. Do not open it to “see what happens.”
- Record its location and basic metadata. In File Explorer, right-click the file, choose Properties, and note the path, size, creation date, and modified date. A date in the filename is not necessarily the file’s creation date.
- Inspect the digital signature. In Properties, open Digital Signatures, select the signer, and choose Details. Continue only if Windows reports that the signature is valid and the signer is TeamViewer or TeamViewer Germany GmbH. A missing, invalid, or unrelated signature is a stop condition.
- Check the certificate chain. In the signature details, view the certificate and make sure Windows can build a trusted chain. An expired certificate can occur on an old file, but it warrants obtaining a current installer rather than overriding the warning.
- Verify with SignTool when it is available. Open an elevated Command Prompt in the folder containing the file and run:
signtool verify /pa "teamviewer_setup - 2020-07-15t162901.400.exe"
The/paswitch uses the default authentication verification policy. Microsoft documents a successful verification as exit code zero. A failure means you should not proceed merely because the filename looks familiar. - Calculate a hash if you have a trusted value to compare. In PowerShell, run:
Get-FileHash -Algorithm SHA256 ".teamviewer_setup - 2020-07-15t162901.400.exe"
A hash is useful only when you can compare it with a value published by a source you trust. A unique hash by itself does not prove safety. - Scan the file and the computer. Run a current Microsoft Defender scan or your organization’s endpoint scanner. If the file was already executed, scan the entire host, not just the installer, and preserve detection names and timestamps for later investigation.
How do I replace the old installer safely?
Use TeamViewer’s live Windows download portal rather than trying to locate a 2020 package by filename. The portal listed TeamViewer Remote, QuickSupport, Host, the full client, MSI packages, and Meeting downloads, and showed version 15.82.6 when checked on October 26, 2026. Availability and version numbers are volatile; select the current supported build shown at the time you download.
- Open the official portal and choose the module that matches your use case.
- Save the installer, then check Properties → Digital Signatures before launching it.
- Confirm that Windows identifies TeamViewer Germany GmbH as publisher and that the signature is valid.
- Run a security scan on the new file.
- Install the current build and remove the unexplained or obsolete executable after you have retained any evidence needed for an incident review.
Which TeamViewer download should I choose?
| Module | Best fit | Typical installation purpose |
|---|---|---|
| QuickSupport | Receiving one-off assistance | A small support module used when another person is helping you; it is not the same as installing a permanent unattended-access service. |
| Full client | Providing or receiving regular connections | The general TeamViewer application for incoming and outgoing remote sessions. |
| Host | Unattended access | Installing a host component on a machine that must be reached without somebody present to approve each session. |
| MSI package | Managed Windows deployment | An installation format suitable for organizations using software-distribution policies. |
| Meeting | TeamViewer meeting functionality | A separate download category on the official portal; choose it only when that is the feature you need. |
Choose only the component you need. Unattended access has different security and account-management implications from a one-time support session, so do not install Host simply because it appears in a search result.
How do I fix a “publisher unknown” or SmartScreen warning?
Stop the installation and treat the warning as a verification failure until the source and signature are clear. Do not disable SmartScreen or click through “Windows protected your PC” just to force an old installer to run.
- Cancel the installer and close any prompt asking for administrator permission.
- Delete or quarantine the file if it came from an unofficial location.
- Download a fresh package from the official portal.
- Repeat the publisher, signature, and malware checks.
- If an organization manages the computer, give the file and its detection details to IT rather than creating a blanket antivirus exclusion.
Unsigned or self-signed applications can trigger Windows security warnings, and Windows 11 Smart App Control may block unsigned files. Microsoft advises downloading software only from official vendor websites or the Microsoft Store. A warning can be a false positive, but bypassing it removes a protection without establishing that the file is legitimate.

How do I fix an old-version or update error?
Replace the package with the latest supported build instead of trying to preserve a 2020 installer. TeamViewer’s TV-2024-1006 bulletin, dated September 25, 2024, reported CVE-2024-7479 and CVE-2024-7481 with CVSS 8.8 (High). The affected Windows issue was fixed in version 15.58.4 and later listed versions, and the bulletin recommends version 15.58.4 or the latest available release.
- Note the currently installed TeamViewer version from its Help or About screen if the program opens.
- Uninstall the old or incomplete installation through Settings → Apps → Installed apps (or Apps & features on older Windows).
- Restart Windows.
- Download the current supported client and verify it before installation.
- After installation, check the version again and apply any in-app update offered by the supported release.
The existence of a vulnerability in older builds does not show that your timestamped file is malware. It does mean that an old installer should not be the final version left on a connected computer.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →How do I fix a 32-bit or 64-bit installation mismatch?
First check Settings → System → About → System type. TeamViewer states that 32-bit Windows requires the 32-bit client, while 64-bit Windows can use the 64-bit client; both architectures cannot be installed side by side.
- On 32-bit Windows, download the 32-bit package.
- On 64-bit Windows, use the 64-bit package unless a documented compatibility requirement says otherwise.
- Remove the existing architecture before installing the other one; do not attempt to layer both clients over each other.
- If the installer still reports a mismatch, uninstall the partial installation, restart, and retry with a newly downloaded package.
What should I do if the download or installation is corrupted?
A truncated download can produce a signature error, an installer that exits immediately, or a package that appears to start and then stops. Remove the partial file and download it again over a stable connection; then repeat the signature check before opening it.

- Cancel the installation and close all TeamViewer setup windows.
- Delete the incomplete installer rather than reusing it.
- Uninstall any partial TeamViewer entry in Windows’ installed-app list.
- Restart the computer to release locked files and services.
- Download a fresh package from the official portal, verify the publisher, and run the installer as an administrator only if Windows asks for elevation and the file has passed your checks.
Do not infer a cause from the timestamped name. Capture the exact error text, the time, and the Windows edition before trying additional changes.
What if the installer exits with no useful message?
Record the exact time and then inspect Windows logs for a more specific failure. Open Event Viewer and review Windows Logs → Application around the installation time. Also check any TeamViewer setup log created by the installer. An exit with no message can result from a damaged package, blocked permissions, incompatible architecture, security software, or remnants of an earlier installation; the filename cannot identify which one occurred.

- Save the Event Viewer error source, event ID, and text.
- Check available disk space and whether the account has permission to install software.
- Remove a partial installation and restart before retrying.
- Ask an administrator or IT team to review endpoint logs if the computer is managed.
What if security software blocks the installer?
Do not create a blanket exclusion. First confirm that the download came from TeamViewer, that the signature names TeamViewer Germany GmbH and is valid, and that the file is current. If your endpoint product still blocks it, preserve the detection name and submit the file or its hash through the product’s documented review or allow-list process. A security exception should be narrow, temporary, and approved by whoever manages the computer.

Microsoft’s documented TeamViewer-named backdoor and the MineBridge side-loading cases show why looking at the surrounding host matters. A clean scan of the installer alone does not prove that a previously executed machine is clean.
How can I decide whether to keep the old file?
Keeping an old installer for offline use is usually a poor trade-off for a remote-access program. It may install a version that lacks later security fixes, and its origin may be impossible to reconstruct years later. If you need an offline package for a controlled deployment, retain the source, signature details, hash, release documentation, and an approved update plan; otherwise delete the unexplained copy after any required investigation.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will deleting the EXE uninstall TeamViewer that is already installed?
No. Deleting an installer removes that downloaded package; it does not normally remove an installed TeamViewer application or its services. Use Windows’ Installed apps page to uninstall the installed product, then restart and check for any organization-managed components.
Does the 2020 timestamp prove when TeamViewer released the program?
No. The suffix is part of a filename and may reflect when a download was named, exported, or copied. It is not a TeamViewer release identifier and cannot date the contents reliably.
What does a valid TeamViewer signature fail to prove?
It supports the publisher and integrity of that particular binary, but it does not prove that the file is the newest build, that it came from your intended download, or that a compromised computer has no other malicious files. Review the source, version, host activity, and scan results as well.
Can I install the 32-bit client on 64-bit Windows as a workaround?
TeamViewer supports the 64-bit client on 64-bit Windows and says the two architectures cannot be installed side by side. If a 32-bit-only requirement exists, remove the existing installation first and use the package appropriate to that documented requirement rather than layering installers.
What information should I give IT when reporting this file?
Provide the full path, exact filename, SHA-256 hash, file size, signature status and signer, download source, detection name, and the time it was opened. Include any unexpected TeamViewer sessions, services, startup entries, or Event Viewer IDs so investigators can correlate the activity.
