What is the 8BitDo FlipPad?
It is a flip-style USB gamepad built for playing on a phone held vertically. 8BitDo positions it for retro games and mobile titles that support controllers; it does not claim that every mobile game recognizes a gamepad. The wired connection avoids wireless pairing, but means the phone must connect through its USB-C port.
The Verge headline quoted in the title appears on a mirrored page by Sean Hollister dated January 10, 2026. That page described the FlipPad as one of two Game Boy-styled mini-controllers shown at CES 2026 and reported a planned summer 2026 window. The manufacturer’s current product page now lists Amazon ordering links for the US and UK, so the old announcement window is not a reliable guide to present availability. Will it work with your iPhone or Android phone?
According to 8BitDo’s current product page, the listed operating-system requirements are Apple iOS 26.2 or later and Android 13.0 or later. The page recommends phones 8–10 mm thick. Check the case as well as the phone
8BitDo says the controller works with most phone cases, with an exception for cases thicker than 2 mm. If your case is near that limit, unusually shaped around the connector, or adds bulk where the controller grips the phone, confirm the fit rather than assuming compatibility.

The two cycle figures are 8BitDo laboratory data under ideal conditions, not independent durability-test results or a guarantee of how long an individual unit will last in everyday use. The listed dimensions and weight are also manufacturer specifications, not independently measured values.

Which games will recognize it?
The available product information describes the FlipPad as suitable for retro games and controller-supported mobile titles, but does not provide a verified game-by-game compatibility list. A game’s availability on iOS or Android does not by itself mean it accepts a physical controller. Check the game’s own controller-support information before buying, especially if you have one specific title in mind.
What should you check before ordering?
- Confirm your phone runs iOS 26.2 or later, or Android 13.0 or later, according to the operating-system support listed by 8BitDo.

How does it differ from a landscape or wireless phone controller?
The FlipPad’s defining choices are portrait orientation and a wired USB-C connection. When comparing it with another phone controller, consider orientation, whether it connects by cable or wireless pairing, supported operating systems, phone and case clearance, button layout, and support in the games you actually play. The available information does not establish a tested comparison with competing controllers.
