There is no single best tank class in The Elder Scrolls Online for every player or encounter. For a beginner, Arcanist and Dragonknight are the smoothest starting points; for dungeon tanks using subclassing, Arcanist, Dragonknight, and Warden are strong foundations. Trial main tanks and off-tanks have different needs, so a dungeon recommendation does not automatically identify the best trial class.
How to choose the best ESO tank class
Tank performance depends on more than a class label. Consider how comfortably you can survive and mitigate incoming damage, sustain resources while blocking, contribute group utility and buffs, and execute the build. The right balance changes with the content, your role, your group composition, and whether you use subclassing.

The Tank Club separates dungeon, trial main-tank, and trial off-tank recommendations rather than giving one ranking for all situations. Its class recommendations are qualitative guide judgments; the sources cited here do not provide publisher-backed numerical comparisons of tank performance.
Best tank class for beginners
Arcanist
The Tank Club recommends Arcanist as one of the smoothest classes for most new tanks. Its shields and sustain can make the class forgiving while you learn positioning, blocking, and encounter mechanics.
#1 Best Overall
Dragonknight
Dragonknight is the other beginner-friendly choice in The Tank Club’s guidance. Its block sustain and reliable mitigation support a straightforward approach to staying alive while learning the role.
Both are sound entry points; choose between them based on which play style feels more appealing rather than treating either as a universal winner.

Dungeon tanking with subclassing
For dungeon tanking with subclassing, The Tank Club identifies Arcanist, Dragonknight, and Warden as strong foundations. Subclass choices should address what the build and group need—such as sustain, defense, or group support—rather than follow a single fixed recipe.
Recommended Free Tools
In practice, compare the skill lines available to your build with the needs already covered by your group. A foundation that works well for one composition may be less useful when its key support or defensive tools duplicate what allies already provide.

Trial main tanks and off-tanks
Do not carry a dungeon ranking straight into trials. Main tanks and off-tanks perform different jobs, and The Tank Club evaluates those roles separately. A specific endgame recommendation depends on which role you mean, the encounter, and the group’s composition; the available guidance does not establish one class as best for every trial setup.
What official class descriptions tell you
ESO lists seven playable classes, but that count does not establish which one tanks best. The official class descriptions associate Dragonknight with durability and defense, Warden with protective frost and ally healing, and Arcanist with defensive and supportive magic. These describe class themes, not comparative tank test results. The official Dragonknight page also says, “As with every class in Elder Scrolls Online, Dragonknights are excellent in any role.”

Check the current patch before copying a build
Class balance and skill recommendations can change with updates. Hyperioxes lists its subclass tank guide as updated for Update 51 on October 6, 2026. Treat build-specific advice as patch-sensitive and check that a guide matches your game version before relying on its skills or setup.
