The Demon Scythe is a pre-Hardmode magic weapon in Terraria. It fires a slow-starting, accelerating sickle-shaped projectile that can hit up to five times before disappearing. Demons and Voodoo Demons can each drop it, with a listed chance of 1 in 35 per eligible kill.
What kind of weapon is the Demon Scythe?
Despite its name and shape, the Demon Scythe is a magic weapon, not a conventional melee scythe. It is available in pre-Hardmode, and its drop is not limited to a later progression stage: Demons can naturally spawn at any point in the game, according to the Official Terraria Wiki.

How do you get the Demon Scythe?
Demons and Voodoo Demons can each drop the weapon. The Official Terraria Wiki lists a 1/35 (2.86%) chance for each enemy type. This is the chance per eligible enemy kill, not a guarantee that a Demon Scythe will appear after 35 kills; a player might get one sooner or go longer without one.

How does its projectile work?
The projectile starts nearly stationary, then accelerates as it travels. It can hit up to five times before dissipating, making its lingering path useful against single targets or groups. It does not pass through blocks. The wiki notes that an enemy directly on the far side of a block may still be damaged when the projectile hits that block.
The wiki’s projectile-speed note is based on Desktop 1.4.1.1 source code, so that calculation should not be treated as a fresh verification for every platform or version. The item page covers Desktop, Console, and Mobile and identifies Desktop 1.4.5.8 as its current version context.

Is the Demon Scythe useful in pre-Hardmode?
It can be useful for both single targets and crowd control, but its unusual projectile has practical trade-offs: it takes time to accelerate, cannot travel through terrain, and costs 14 mana per use. The Official Terraria Wiki suggests Mana Regeneration Potions as a potentially better fit than Mana Potions because the projectile can continue dealing damage while mana regenerates. That is the wiki’s practical recommendation, not a guarantee of performance for every character or encounter.
