The individual golf competition is broadly similar at both events: four rounds of stroke play, or 72 holes. The key difference is the medal program. In the Hangzhou 2022 Asian Games, held in 2023, golfers competed for both individual and team medals; the Tokyo 2020 Olympic materials cited here describe men’s and women’s individual events.
How does the individual competition work?
In both documented editions, the individual contest took the familiar form of four rounds of stroke play. Tokyo 2020’s guide specifies four 18-hole rounds, for 72 holes in total. The Hangzhou organizer’s schedule likewise lists four rounds of golf, held September 28 through October 1, 2023, at West Lake International Golf Course. Tokyo 2020 ticketing guide; Hangzhou golf event page.
Stroke play means each player’s score is the total number of strokes taken across the rounds; the lowest total wins the individual event. The sources do not indicate that the basic game is fundamentally different because one competition is Olympic and the other is Asian Games.
What medals are awarded?
The clearest distinction is the team competition at Hangzhou. The organizer listed four golf gold medals: men’s individual, women’s individual, men’s team, and women’s team. The Tokyo 2020 Olympic regulations and guide cited here describe men’s and women’s individual competitions, not team-medal events.

How was Asian Games team golf scored at Hangzhou?
At Hangzhou, team scoring was added to the individual competition rather than replacing it. Teams submitted daily scores, and only a subset counted toward the team total:
Rank #2
- The Strata Plus Set is a full set with a great combination of distance and forgiveness right out of the box. Set includes: Driver, 3 Wood, 5 Hybrid, 6 - 9 Iron, PW & SW, Putter, Stand Bag, and 3 Head covers
- Woods: Driver has a 460cc club head with a larger sweet spot and graphite shaft for more distance off the tee. The 3 Wood promotes faster swing speeds and long shots
- Hybrid: 5 Hybrid is designed for versatility and forgiveness on shots where you would usually hit a difficult long iron
- Irons/Wedges: 6 to 9 irons, pitching wedge & sand wedge have perimeter weighting and progressive sole width technology for improved control
- Putter: Mallet putter with alignment to help give you incredible accuracy
- Men: four players represented each team; the best three scores counted each round.
- Women: three players represented each team; the best two scores counted each round.
Across the four rounds, the counting scores formed the team total, with the lowest total determining the team result. Yonhap reported these roster and scoring details, attributing them to information from the Korea Golf Association. Yonhap News Agency, February 24, 2022.
How large were the fields?
The International Golf Federation’s Tokyo 2020 regulations set a maximum quota of 60 men and 60 women, 120 athletes total. That figure belongs to the Tokyo edition; it should not be treated as a permanent Olympic quota. Hangzhou’s announced roster framework was four men and three women per team, which describes team composition rather than a total field size.

The Hangzhou event is commonly called the 2022 Asian Games, but it was held in 2023. Its golf competition ran from September 28 to October 1, 2023. Tokyo’s event is similarly named for its edition, Tokyo 2020, though it took place in 2021. When comparing results or schedules, use the edition name and actual competition dates to avoid confusion.
