In Pokémon, Shell Armor and Battle Armor are two separately named Abilities with the same battle effect: each prevents the Pokémon that has it from being hit by a critical hit. The names do not signal a stronger or weaker version of anything. The only real difference is the label, and which Pokémon can have each one.
What both Abilities do
Shell Armor and Battle Armor both stop critical hits against the Pokémon holding them. The Battle Armor reference describes its effect as identical to Shell Armor’s, so a Pokémon with either Ability takes the same protection in battle. Neither one reduces damage, raises a defensive stat, or blocks attacks in general. Treat “critical hit immunity” as the whole mechanic.

Shell Armor
The Bulbapedia entry for Shell Armor (Ability) states that the Ability prevents critical hits, and that this includes moves that normally always land a critical hit. It also notes that Shell Armor has no effect outside battle. The Generation IX in-game description reads: “A hard shell protects the Pokémon from critical hits.”
Battle Armor
Battle Armor is a separate Ability with its own entry, and the Dittobase page for Battle Armor records it as functioning identically to Shell Armor. Its Scarlet and Violet description reads: “Hard armor protects the Pokémon from critical hits.” The wording differs, but the effect does not.

Why the names differ
Pokémon often gives similar Abilities different names when they share a mechanic, and the two sources do not explain why these two were split. Because the reference data treats them as the same effect, you should not expect one to behave better in a fight.
Checking which Pokémon can have each Ability
Which Pokémon can have Shell Armor or Battle Armor depends on the game and, in some cases, the form. The Bulbapedia page covers many generations at once, so do not read its full list as a single-game roster. To confirm eligibility for the game you are playing, check a Pokédex for that specific version, or use the Ability listing on the Pokémon’s own page for the relevant generation.

Bottom line for players
If a battle plan depends on critical-hit protection, either Ability provides the same protection. Choosing between them comes down to which Pokémon you want to build around, not to any difference in strength.
