Short answer: Ultimate Ironman (UIM) is the hardest official Old School RuneScape account mode because it combines every Ironman restriction with permanent removal of bank access. If community-made rules count, Extreme Onechunk Ironman is a more restrictive challenge: you must complete a demanding checklist in one map chunk before unlocking another.
What “hardest” means in OSRS
There is no official Jagex leaderboard that ranks every challenge account by difficulty. “Hardest” depends on which pressure you mean: restrictions imposed by the game, the danger of losing an account, the amount of territory available, or the number of objectives required before progress is allowed.

Using those distinctions, two answers are defensible:
- Hardest official mode: Ultimate Ironman.
- Hardest widely discussed community ruleset: Extreme Onechunk Ironman, which layers a severe geographic and completion checklist onto Ironman mechanics.
UIM is a standardized game mode supported by OSRS mechanics. Extreme Onechunk is not a separate Jagex mode; it is a player-created ruleset whose exact edge cases can differ between creators.

How the official Ironman restrictions work
Every mode discussed here starts with the Ironman rule set. Jagex describes the concept as earning progression without trading, multiplayer assistance or experience handouts. The restrictions include:
- No player-to-player trades.
- No Grand Exchange trades, except the purchase or sale of bonds under the game’s bond rules.
- No picking up drops created for another player.
- No Lootshare, except in Ironman-only groups.
- No experience or loot gained through PvP.
- Heavily limited rewards from multiplayer minigames.
- No assist feature and no accepting aid from another player.
- Dungeoneering must be completed solo.
These rules make every useful item, skill level and upgrade part of your own progression route. You cannot solve a missing drop by buying it, ask another player to train a skill for you, or collect another player’s monster loot.
Ironman restrictions apply regardless of whether the account is a regular Ironman, Hardcore Ironman or Ultimate Ironman. The differences between those modes come from death handling, storage and (for community challenges) movement rules.

Why Ultimate Ironman is the hardest official account mode
UIM adds one decisive rule to the normal Ironman restrictions: you never have access to a bank. Your inventory is your only permanent storage, supplemented by a limited set of purpose-built containers and storage systems.
Storage you can use instead of a bank
UIM players plan around containers such as:
- Looting bags
- Rune pouches
- Seed boxes
- Fish barrels
- Herb sacks
- Clue boxes
- Storage available through a player-owned house
Each option has a narrow purpose, capacity limit or access requirement. A container can preserve one category of supplies, but it does not recreate the flexible, nearly unlimited sorting and retrieval of a bank. Before starting a skilling session, quest or boss trip, a UIM must decide what to carry, what to destroy, what to deposit into a permitted container and which future items will be impossible to reclaim.

Inventory management becomes progression
On a conventional account, a new weapon, quest item or stack of materials can be placed in the bank immediately. On UIM, obtaining that item may force a choice between keeping it and discarding something already earned. Resource gathering is therefore tied to logistics: where an item can be stored, how it can be recovered, and whether the next activity consumes an irreplaceable inventory slot.
This changes ordinary decisions. A player may delay a quest because its reward occupies space, postpone a drop hunt until a container is available, or complete several activities in one trip to avoid repeatedly rearranging supplies. The difficulty is persistent rather than limited to a single dangerous encounter.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesDeath piles and “deathbanking”
The UIM guide also describes deliberate deathbanking. After a non-Wilderness death, tradeable items can remain in a death pile for 30 minutes. Players may use that window as temporary storage while they perform another activity, but the timer creates a hard recovery deadline. Items left unrecovered when the window expires are no longer safely available.
Deathbanking is a logistics tool, not a normal bank replacement. It requires a route back to the pile, careful timing and a plan for what happens if the character dies again or the recovery trip takes longer than expected.
Is UIM harder than Hardcore Ironman?
Neither mode is universally harder for every player because they punish different mistakes.

| Account type | Official status | Trading and assistance | Storage | Main failure pressure |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ironman | Official Jagex mode | Ironman restrictions: no player trades or ordinary Grand Exchange trading; no outside aid | Bank available | Self-sufficient progression and solo completion |
| Hardcore Ironman | Official Jagex mode | All Ironman restrictions | Bank available | A death in a non-safe activity permanently makes the account no longer playable |
| Ultimate Ironman | Official Jagex mode | All Ironman restrictions | No bank; inventory, permitted containers and house storage | Permanent inventory and storage constraints, plus ordinary activity risks |
| Extreme Onechunk Ironman | Community ruleset, not a Jagex mode | Usually built on Ironman restrictions | Depends on the underlying account type and the creator’s rules | Must exhaust a large checklist in one map chunk before unlocking another |
Hardcore Ironman has the harsher single-event consequence: Jagex states that when a Hardcore dies in a non-safe activity, “your account will no longer be playable.” UIM instead makes every stage of progression harder through storage and planning. A player who values a single life above all else may find Hardcore more stressful; a player who measures difficulty by sustained logistical complexity will generally regard UIM as harder.
The modes can also be combined in practice. A Hardcore UIM would face both the no-bank rule and the Hardcore death consequence, but the comparison above concerns the standard named modes rather than claiming a universal ranking for every possible combination.
What is Extreme Onechunk Ironman?
Extreme Onechunk Ironman is a community challenge in which the account begins in one selected map chunk. The player cannot simply travel across Gielinor for normal progression. Before moving onward, the player must complete the challenge’s required objectives in the current chunk.
Verf’s 2024 description gives the core checklist as:
- Complete all of the highest-level skilling challenges available there, including skillcapes.
- Complete every available achievement diary task and quest.
- Obtain all unique monster drops.
- Obtain all unique items found in the chunk.
- Obtain all unique minigame rewards available in the chunk.
Only after those requirements are satisfied can the account roll or unlock the next chunk under the chosen rules. The result is not merely an Ironman with less map space. It is a sequence of self-contained completion campaigns, each of which may demand rare drops, high skill levels and unusual uses of the local content.

Why the first chunk matters
The starting chunk determines which skills, quests, monsters, shops and minigames are available. A chunk with limited training methods can make a skill-cape requirement extremely demanding; a chunk containing a required quest step may be impossible until several local prerequisites are solved. Because later chunks are locked, the account cannot normally bypass an early bottleneck by visiting a more profitable region.
Community rules and edge cases
Unlike UIM, Extreme Onechunk has no single authoritative rules document enforced by the game client. Creators may differ on questions such as what counts as a unique item, whether a reward obtained outside the chunk is valid, how duplicate drops are treated, and which optional grinds are mandatory. A player should publish or adopt a precise rules document before starting so that the completion standard does not change after an inconvenient drop or quest.
For that reason, “Extreme Onechunk” should be presented as a named community ruleset, not as an official OSRS account type. Its difficulty is real but partly defined by the creator’s interpretation.
How the two hardest interpretations compare
| Difficulty axis | Ultimate Ironman | Extreme Onechunk Ironman |
|---|---|---|
| Who defines the rules? | Jagex and the OSRS game systems | Creator or community rules layered on Ironman mechanics |
| Geographic freedom | Normal world access, subject to ordinary requirements | Restricted to one chunk until its checklist is complete |
| Bank access | Never | Depends on whether the underlying account is a regular Ironman or UIM |
| Progress gate | Inventory capacity and self-sufficient acquisition | Completion of local skills, quests, diaries, drops, items and minigame rewards |
| Death consequence | Uses UIM death and storage mechanics; death piles may be available after a non-Wilderness death | Depends on the selected underlying mode and the challenge rules |
| Rule consistency | Standardized by the game | Can vary between challenge creators |
The two challenges attack different resources. UIM restricts space: every item competes for storage. Onechunk restricts place: every objective must be solved where the account currently is. A player using both concepts would face both pressures, but that combination should be named explicitly because it is not one of the standard official modes.

Choose UIM when you mean the hardest official mode
Use UIM as the answer when the question is about an account type recognized and mechanically enforced by Jagex. Its defining rule is unambiguous: no bank, ever, on top of every Ironman restriction. The challenge affects every session, from early gathering to endgame item management, and does not depend on a creator’s personal checklist.

Choose Extreme Onechunk when self-imposed completion is the test
Use Extreme Onechunk when the question includes community challenges, restricted geography or “complete everything before moving on.” Its checklist can demand skillcapes, every local quest and diary task, unique monster drops, unique items and minigame rewards before a single additional chunk is unlocked.
Choose Hardcore when the defining fear is account loss
Hardcore Ironman is the clearest answer for a player who considers permanent failure the ultimate difficulty. Its non-safe death rule is absolute: once that death occurs, the account is no longer playable. It is not automatically harder than UIM in logistics, however, because Hardcore retains normal bank access.
Planning and failure points
For a UIM
- Reserve inventory space before beginning a quest or drop hunt.
- Decide which permitted container will hold each resource category.
- Keep a recovery route and timer in mind whenever using deathbanking.
- Do not treat a death pile as permanent storage; the 30-minute window is temporary.
- Expect to discard or delay items when a more important upgrade competes for the same slot.
For an Extreme Onechunk account
- Write the exact checklist before selecting the starting chunk.
- List every local quest, diary task, skill milestone, monster unique, item unique and minigame reward.
- Mark which objectives require rare drops or high-level training so they are not mistaken for optional content.
- Define how duplicates, outside-chunk rewards and ambiguous “unique” items will be judged.
- Record completion evidence before unlocking the next chunk, because later travel can make verification difficult.
For a Hardcore account
- Separate safe activities from non-safe activities before attempting unfamiliar content.
- Assume that a mistake in a non-safe activity ends the account’s playable status.
- Use the bank advantage for preparation, but do not confuse storage convenience with immunity to the death rule.
What is established—and what is not
The official rules establish the restrictions for Ironman, Hardcore Ironman and UIM, including the Hardcore death consequence and UIM’s permanent lack of bank access. The Onechunk checklist is documented by community creators, including Verf’s 2024 description, but its interpretation can vary.
No authoritative statistic establishes completion hours, average deaths, failure rates or player populations for these challenges. Those numbers would depend on the selected chunk, account build, rules interpretation and player decisions, so they should not be used to claim a universal measured ranking.
Sources and terminology
Jagex’s Ironman Mode guidance, accessed October 19, 2026, supplies the official restrictions and Hardcore death rule. Jagex’s current UIM guidance supplies the no-bank rule, permitted storage examples and the 30-minute death-pile description. Verf’s 2024 video description supplies the Extreme Onechunk checklist. Community edge cases should be treated as ruleset decisions rather than game-enforced facts.
