Investors track it by combining broad sales data with inventory, utilization, wafer shipments, capital expenditure, equipment billings and company-level disclosures. No single AI metric, stock price or company forecast can identify the cycle reliably on its own.
What the semiconductor cycle measures
Semiconductors are made in capacity-intensive factories whose output cannot be adjusted instantly. When demand rises faster than available wafer capacity, customers compete for supply, utilization increases and average selling prices (ASPs) and margins generally improve. Chipmakers respond by ordering equipment, adding clean-room capacity and raising capital expenditure (CapEx).

Those decisions arrive with a lag. By the time new capacity starts producing, end-market demand may have slowed. Inventory can then build at chipmakers, distributors and customers. Prices weaken, utilization falls and manufacturers defer equipment orders. The resulting downturn eventually reduces inventories and limits new supply, creating the conditions for another recovery. Axcelis Technologies described the pattern in its 2025 Form 10-K as an industry in which global production capacities successively “exceed, then lag behind” global chip demand.

The cycle is not one synchronized wave. Memory, logic, analog, power, sensors, industrial chips, automotive devices and AI/data-center components can be at different points at the same time. A strong AI-led memory and advanced-logic market can coexist with weak mature-node, industrial or automotive demand. Investors therefore need both an industry-wide view and a segment-by-segment diagnosis.

The four practical phases
Early recovery
- Industry sales stop declining or begin to improve sequentially.
- Inventory growth slows, then starts to normalize.
- Fab utilization reaches a low and stabilizes.
- Equipment billings stop falling or become less negative.
Early recovery is often uneven. A few product categories may turn first while broad demand remains weak. The most useful confirmation is a sequence of improving indicators rather than a single positive month.
Expansion
- Revenue and unit shipments accelerate on both sequential and year-over-year comparisons.
- ASPs, gross margins and operating margins improve.
- Utilization rises as customers draw down excess inventory.
- CapEx and equipment orders increase to meet expected demand.
Expansion can produce strong earnings growth, but the market may begin pricing in the next capacity wave before reported profits peak.
Late cycle
- Capacity additions and CapEx grow faster than end demand.
- Inventory days rise at suppliers, distributors or customers.
- ASPs or margins stop improving and begin to roll over.
- Equipment billings remain strong because previously placed orders are still shipping.
Late-cycle conditions are difficult to spot from equipment revenue alone: equipment suppliers can report growth while the eventual chip oversupply is already forming. Compare orders and billings with utilization, inventory and end-market units.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsDownturn
- Sales and unit shipments decline.
- Customers liquidate inventory and cancel or defer orders.
- Fab utilization falls.
- Chipmakers cut CapEx, pushing equipment and materials demand lower.
The downturn ends when inventories become manageable, supply growth slows and demand stabilizes. Because companies do not all have the same products or customers, their earnings troughs can occur months apart.

The investor dashboard: indicators that matter
| Indicator | What it measures | How to read it | Typical timing |
|---|---|---|---|
| WSTS/SIA sales | Revenue, units and ASPs by product, end use and region | Broadest demand check; use sequential and year-over-year changes | Monthly; SIA says reports arrive within five weeks of month-end |
| Inventory | Stock held by chipmakers, distributors and customers | Slowing growth is an early recovery signal; rising days during strong supply can signal late cycle | Quarterly company disclosures and industry monitors |
| Fab utilization | How much available manufacturing capacity is running | Bottoming utilization supports recovery; falling utilization confirms weakening demand | Quarterly or company-specific |
| Wafer shipments | Physical semiconductor manufacturing volume | Separates real unit demand from price-only revenue changes | Industry and company updates |
| CapEx | Chipmaker spending on factories and production equipment | Rising CapEx supports equipment makers but can create future oversupply | Quarterly guidance and filings |
| Equipment billings | Revenue billed by semiconductor-equipment suppliers | A leading supply-chain signal; stabilization can precede chip-industry recovery | SEMI three-month average, published about three weeks after month-end |
| Backlog and book-to-bill | Orders received versus equipment shipped or recognized | Shows forward demand, but backlog can persist after end demand turns | Company filings and releases |
| Company inventory days | How long distributor or company stock would cover demand | Falling days usually indicate normalization; interpret by product and channel | Quarterly filings |
Start with broad demand data
The World Semiconductor Trade Statistics (WSTS) program, whose monthly industry data are described by the Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA) as being compiled from member-company reporting, provides revenue, unit and ASP data by product, end use and region. Its historical series extends back to 1976. This breadth helps prevent an investor from mistaking one company’s exposure for the whole market.
Record the latest month’s total sales, units, ASPs and regional changes. Read both the month-over-month or sequential direction and the year-over-year rate. A high year-over-year growth rate can merely reflect an easy comparison with a depressed prior year; a positive sequential change shows whether momentum is improving now. SIA reports WSTS monthly sales as a three-month moving average, which reduces noise from calendar effects and individual reporting swings.
Separate historical observations from forecasts. A WSTS forecast is a scenario, not realized sales. Keep the forecast vintage and publication date in your spreadsheet so an estimate is not later mistaken for an actual result.
Confirm demand through the supply chain
Sales growth is more credible when physical and financial supply-chain measures agree. SEMI’s Semiconductor Manufacturing Monitor covers industry sales, inventory, utilization, wafer shipments, CapEx, equipment billings, fab capacity and leading-company revenue. Use these series to ask whether demand is pulling production higher or whether suppliers are simply shipping into inventory.

Inventory
Inventory should be split into at least three locations: chipmaker stock, distributor stock and customer stock. A manufacturer can report healthy shipments while distributors are still reducing accumulated stock. Inventory days are more informative than an absolute dollar balance because they relate stock to the current sales rate, but compare only like-for-like products and channels.
Utilization and wafer shipments
Utilization shows whether existing factories are busy; wafer shipments show physical output. If sales improve while utilization remains low, the recovery may be limited to price or a narrow product group. If units, shipments and utilization rise together, the signal is broader.
Equipment billings and CapEx
SEMI says its global equipment-billings series, calculated as a three-month average and published about three weeks after month-end, is a strong indicator of worldwide semiconductor-industry trends. Treat it as an early supply signal, not a guaranteed earnings forecast for every equipment company. CapEx guidance from chipmakers tells you how aggressively customers intend to add capacity, while billings show when equipment suppliers are actually invoicing orders.

- Distributor inventory days and any comments about customer inventory.
- Backlog, bookings and book-to-bill where disclosed.
- ASP movement and the balance between price, mix and unit growth.
- Fab utilization, production levels and lead times.
- Gross-margin direction and the stated causes of change.
- Current-quarter and full-year CapEx, plus changes to guidance.
- End-market revenue for computing, communications, automotive, industrial and consumer products.
- Geographic exposure and customer concentration.
For a dated example, Microchip Technology reported distributor inventory of 25 days at June 30, 2026, compared with 26 days at March 31, 2026, in its 2026 Form 10-Q. That one-day change is evidence about Microchip’s channel at those dates; it is not proof that the entire semiconductor industry had reached a particular phase.
Adjust the analysis for product and business model
| Business or product exposure | Cycle characteristics to examine | Useful questions |
|---|---|---|
| Memory | Highly sensitive to supply additions, bit growth, inventory and spot or contract pricing | Are units rising because of real demand, and are prices broadening beyond one application? |
| Advanced logic and foundries | Driven by leading-node capacity, large customers and utilization | Are new nodes filling, and is CapEx supported by customer commitments? |
| Analog and power | Often exposed to industrial, automotive and energy equipment replacement cycles | Are customers still reducing stock, or are orders turning up across regions? |
| Sensors and mature-node chips | Can lag AI and computing demand when consumer, industrial or automotive markets are weak | Are mature-node fabs gaining utilization or remaining underloaded? |
| Fabless designers | Lower direct CapEx but concentrated customer and foundry dependence | Is backlog converting to shipments, and is one customer driving the growth? |
| Integrated manufacturers | Own-factory utilization and inventory have direct margin effects | Can production be reduced quickly without damaging cost absorption? |
| Equipment and materials suppliers | Orders can lead chip revenue but may be volatile and backlog-heavy | Are billings, bookings and customer CapEx improving together? |
The same market recovery can therefore produce different earnings timing. An equipment maker may turn before a chip manufacturer, while a fabless designer with a concentrated AI customer may grow despite weakness elsewhere. Compare like exposures rather than ranking companies by total semiconductor revenue alone.
A repeatable workflow for tracking the cycle
- Build the demand baseline. Enter the latest WSTS/SIA monthly revenue, unit, ASP, product, end-use and regional changes. Mark each observation as historical or forecast and note the publication date.
- Calculate trends. Keep sequential and year-over-year changes, and use three-month averages for noisy monthly series. Do not infer a turn from one unusually strong or weak month.
- Update the supply sheet quarterly. Add inventory, utilization, wafer shipments, CapEx, equipment billings and fab-capacity changes from SEMI and company disclosures.
- Sample the value chain. Read filings and earnings releases from a mix of fabless designers, foundries, integrated manufacturers, equipment suppliers and materials companies.
- Score breadth. Mark whether improvement appears in memory, logic, analog, power, sensors, industrial, automotive and AI/data-center products. A single AI-heavy segment should not determine the industry label.
- Classify the phase. Use the phase definitions above only after demand, inventory, utilization and capital-spending signals point in the same direction.
- Test the valuation. Compare a company’s price with normalized, not just peak or trough, earnings. Cyclical earnings often look cheapest near a peak and most expensive near a trough because profits and expectations move at different speeds.
How to recognize false signals
One company is not the industry
A single earnings beat may reflect product mix, a customer launch or share gains. Require corroboration from broad sales, units, inventory and at least one supply indicator before calling a sector recovery.

Revenue can rise without healthy units
Higher ASPs can lift revenue while unit demand is flat. Check units and wafer shipments alongside price. Conversely, falling ASPs can hide improving unit demand during a competitive or oversupplied period.

Backlog can outlive demand
Equipment and chip companies may carry orders placed months earlier. Compare backlog with new bookings, cancellations, utilization and customer CapEx revisions.
AI leadership can mask weakness elsewhere
The latest cited results show a powerful 2025 expansion led by computer applications, AI and data-center infrastructure, while WSTS also reported industrial demand returning to growth. That combination is encouraging, but investors should still compare it with analog, sensors, industrial and automotive trends before describing the whole market as recovered.
What the latest cited figures say
WSTS reported global semiconductor sales of $795.6 billion in 2025, up 26.2% from 2024, in its 2026 release of 2025 results. It also reported fourth-quarter 2025 revenue of $238.9 billion, up 38.4% year over year. These are industry totals for the stated period, not a forecast and not a guarantee that every product category or company shared the same growth rate.
For longer context, the SIA’s 2025 Factbook, citing WSTS, Gartner and Omdia estimates, put worldwide semiconductor sales at $630.5 billion in 2024 and calculated a 6.8% compound annual growth rate from 2001 through 2024. The long-run figure helps frame structural growth; it does not remove the shorter inventory and capacity swings that drive cyclical earnings.
Data sources and how to use them
Investors who need the underlying series can use the WSTS/SIA market-data subscription for monthly sales, units, ASPs, product, end-use and regional data, along with forecasts. SEMI’s Semiconductor Manufacturing Monitor provides quarterly sales, inventory, utilization, wafer shipments, CapEx, equipment billings, fab capacity and company-revenue data. Check each provider’s current access terms and data vintage before relying on a series.
Keep a dated archive of every release. Revisions, changing product definitions and different reporting calendars can otherwise make an apparent trend a data-construction artifact rather than a real change in demand.
