WpSystem is a Windows-managed folder used by some Microsoft Store apps and games. It often appears on a D: drive, another secondary partition, or an external disk after the Store’s app-install location is changed. Do not delete it manually while any Store app on that drive may depend on it: doing so can make apps or games crash or stop working. The safe approach is to identify the dependent apps, uninstall or move them through Windows, and then use Windows storage cleanup. Only consider removing a leftover folder after the drive is no longer being used for Store apps and you have confirmed that no package still needs it.
What is the WpSystem folder?
WpSystem is part of the storage structure Windows creates for certain Microsoft Store applications. Windows normally keeps Store packages in the hidden C:Program FilesWindowsApps directory. If you change the Store’s default install location to another partition or an external drive, Windows can create a group of protected folders on that destination, including WindowsApps, WpSystem, WUDownloadCache, and Program Files.

1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe folder is therefore usually an application-data location, not a random temporary directory. Its contents and size depend on the apps installed on that drive. A WpSystem folder beside WindowsApps on D:, G:, or a removable disk is expected when that disk has been used as a Microsoft Store library.
Which apps create or use WpSystem?
Reported examples include VLC, Halo, Halo 5: Forge, and Microsoft Flight Simulator. Xbox Game Pass installations are also associated with the same storage arrangement. These examples are not a complete dependency list; the exact packages vary by computer, Windows edition, and where each app was installed.

Why is it hidden or protected?
Store packages need controlled permissions and registration so Windows can update, repair, and remove them consistently. WpSystem is commonly owned by the SYSTEM account, which is why File Explorer may show a padlock or a message saying that permission from SYSTEM is required. That protection is a sign to use app-management tools rather than treating the folder like ordinary user-created files.
Is it safe to delete WpSystem?
Not while an installed Store app or game uses it. Manual deletion can remove data or package components that an app expects, leading to crashes, failed launches, broken updates, or a damaged installation. If every relevant app has been uninstalled and the disk is no longer a Store install location, the folder may be removable as leftover data, but Windows does not provide one universal test that proves a WpSystem directory is unused. Use the conservative workflow below instead of forcing deletion.
Recommended Free Tools
| Option | Safety | Best use | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Leave WpSystem in place | Highest while apps remain installed | You still use Store apps or games on that drive | Recovers no space |
| Repair or reset the app | High | The app is wanted but is malfunctioning | May not remove large data files |
| Uninstall the dependent app | High when done through Windows | You no longer need the app | Removes the app and its local data according to that app’s behavior |
| Storage Sense or Cleanup recommendations | High | General cleanup after app management | Does not specifically target every WpSystem item |
| Manual folder deletion | Low | Only after confirming no dependent package or data remains | Can cause crashes, broken registration, or permission problems |
How do I find out whether an app depends on WpSystem?
Start with the drive itself, then match it to the apps Windows says are installed there. Do not infer dependency from the folder name alone: a computer can have several Store apps, and only some may use that particular disk.
- Note the drive letter. In File Explorer, record whether WpSystem is on D:, G:, an external hard drive, or another volume. Check whether
WindowsApps,WUDownloadCache, or aProgram Filesfolder is beside it; that combination commonly indicates a Store install destination. - Review installed apps. Open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps. Look for Store apps and games that you installed or moved to the same drive, including large games and apps installed through Game Pass. Open an app’s details and check whether Windows offers a Move option or identifies its storage location.
- Check before changing anything. If you still use an app and it is installed on that volume, leave WpSystem alone. If you cannot tell where an app is installed, treat the folder as in use until you have moved or uninstalled the app through Windows.
Can PowerShell help identify packages?
For a technical inventory, Microsoft Learn documents Get-AppxPackage for inspecting package registration for the current user. Open PowerShell and run:
Get-AppxPackage
The output lists registered Appx packages, which can help you compare the apps registered to your account with the Store apps you found in Settings. Registration information is not, by itself, a guarantee that every file on a drive is safe to remove, so use it as a diagnostic check rather than permission to delete WpSystem.

How do I remove WpSystem without breaking Microsoft Store apps?
Use this order: remove or relocate the apps first, repair anything you intend to keep, run Windows cleanup, and only then reassess the folder after a restart.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
1. Uninstall apps you no longer need
- Open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Select the Store app or game associated with the WpSystem drive.
- Choose Uninstall and complete the confirmation prompts.
- Repeat for every app you no longer want on that volume. If an app offers a supported Move action and you still need it, move it to another Windows-managed location instead of deleting its files manually.
Uninstalling through Settings removes the package using Windows’ normal registration and cleanup process. It is safer than taking ownership of WpSystem and dragging it to the Recycle Bin.
2. Repair or reset apps you still want
If the app is needed but is failing, open its entry under Settings > Apps > Installed apps, select the three-dot menu, choose Advanced options, and use Repair first. Repair attempts to correct the installation without immediately removing the app’s data. If that does not help, Reset reinstalls the app’s state and can remove its local data, so check the app’s own save and account behavior before using it.
Microsoft Learn also documents Appx registration and re-registration procedures for cases where package entries are missing or damaged. Those commands are intended for targeted troubleshooting; do not unregister packages simply to make a directory disappear.
3. Run Windows storage cleanup
After uninstalling or moving apps, open Settings > System > Storage and review Storage Sense and Cleanup recommendations. These tools can remove eligible temporary and system files without bypassing Store permissions. For Store-related temporary problems, Microsoft Support also recommends resetting the Store with wsreset.exe and running the Windows Update troubleshooter.

4. Restart and check again
Restart Windows before judging what remains. Appx removal is asynchronous and best-effort: Microsoft Learn notes that removing a package deletes its registration, but files can remain on disk while cleanup finishes. Leftover files after an uninstall can therefore be inert and low risk, but you should still verify that the app is gone and that no other installed package uses the drive.
What should I do if Windows says I need permission from SYSTEM?
Do not take ownership merely to force deletion. SYSTEM ownership is normal for protected Store locations, and changing permissions can make future updates, repairs, or uninstalls harder. First complete the supported uninstall, move, repair, or reset workflow; only investigate permissions as an app-management problem if a specific package remains broken.
If an uninstall fails, record the app name and the exact error, restart, and try the uninstall again from Installed apps. For a package that is registered incorrectly, use Microsoft’s documented Appx removal or re-registration commands rather than deleting its parent folder. Administrative PowerShell should be reserved for a package you have positively identified, because removing the wrong package can affect a working app.
Can I delete WpSystem from a D: drive or external hard drive?
The drive letter does not make deletion safer. WpSystem on D: or an external disk can be just as important as WpSystem on the system disk if that volume is the current Store install location. Disconnecting the disk, changing its letter, or deleting the folder while an app is installed can leave the app registered but unable to find its data.
Before considering removal, uninstall or move every Store app that uses that volume, confirm that Windows is no longer configured to install new Store apps there, run storage cleanup, and restart. If the folder returns after you install or move another Store app to the disk, that is expected: Windows recreates the supporting directory structure.

Why can files remain after an app is uninstalled?
Appx cleanup is not an instantaneous file deletion. Package registration can be removed first, while Windows performs best-effort cleanup in the background. A remaining WpSystem subfolder therefore does not automatically mean the uninstall failed or that you should seize ownership.
Check the Installed apps list, restart, and allow Windows storage tools to process eligible leftovers. If the removed app is still listed, still launches, or reports a missing-package error, repair or reinstall it before touching any shared folder. If no dependent app remains and the directory contains only inert leftovers, manual removal becomes a last-resort housekeeping action rather than the first troubleshooting step.
What is the safest decision for your situation?
- You still use a Store app or game on the drive: leave WpSystem in place. Its presence is expected.
- The app is wanted but malfunctioning: use Advanced options, then Repair or Reset; consider Appx re-registration only for a diagnosed package problem.
- You no longer want the app: uninstall it from Installed apps, then restart and run Storage Sense or Cleanup recommendations.
- The folder remains after all related apps are gone: verify the drive is no longer a Store install destination and reassess after cleanup. Do not assume that a permission error means the folder is disposable.
- You are unsure which package owns the data: do not delete it. Inventory Installed apps and, if necessary, inspect registrations with
Get-AppxPackageor obtain package-specific support.
Frequently asked questions
Does WpSystem contain my personal documents or photos?
It is intended for Store application data, not for your ordinary Documents, Pictures, or Desktop files. An app may keep saves, caches, or downloaded content in different locations, however, so check the app’s own backup or sync instructions before resetting or uninstalling it.
Will deleting WpSystem make Windows or games run faster?
There is no published performance figure showing a speed benefit from removing the folder. The practical effect is space recovery after an app has been properly removed; deleting active data can instead create launch and update failures.
Why does WpSystem come back after I removed it?
Windows recreates the folder when a Store app is installed on, or moved to, a volume configured for Store applications. Its return is usually evidence that the disk is still being used as an app destination, not proof that the previous deletion was incomplete.

Can antivirus software safely remove WpSystem?
Security software should not be used as a folder-cleanup mechanism for Store packages. If a security product flags a file, quarantine or review that specific detection, then use Windows’ package and storage tools for ordinary cleanup so registration and permissions remain consistent.
How can I tell whether a leftover folder is actually empty?
Use File Explorer’s Properties to inspect size and contents after uninstall and restart, but do not equate a small size with no dependency. The decisive checks are that related apps are no longer installed, the drive is no longer selected for Store installs, and Windows reports no package or update error.
