Its wireless connection depends on the host device. Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One consoles use Xbox Wireless; supported Windows 10/11 PCs, tablets, iOS and Android devices, and compatible Smart TVs use Bluetooth. Charging requires a USB-C cable, which Microsoft says is sold separately. In the United States, the controller is listed at $49.99 for release on November 4, 2026, so the October 19, 2026 status is preorder rather than general availability.
What the Xbox Nano Controller is
Microsoft positions the XBOX Nano Controller as its smallest controller, with a compact shape intended to fit in a pocket and feel manageable in smaller hands. The official product page calls it “Our smallest controller, for big adventures” and describes it as an entry-level, rechargeable controller. It keeps a standard Xbox-style control layout, so it is intended for compatible games rather than for a special Nano-only game library. The same hardware can serve as a primary pad for a small-handed player, a travel controller, a family-game-night option or a backup for a second player.

The compact form factor is the main reason to consider it. It does not turn an Xbox into a different platform, and Microsoft has not presented it as a high-end competitive controller with unusual controls or an expanded feature set. The important practical questions are whether your host device supports the right wireless protocol, whether your games recognize an Xbox-compatible controller, and whether you have a USB-C charging cable available.

Connectivity in one view
The Nano Controller does not use one universal wireless mode. Microsoft assigns a different connection path to consoles and to Bluetooth-capable consumer devices.
| Host device | Connection Microsoft specifies | What that means |
|---|---|---|
| Xbox Series X|S | Xbox Wireless | Use the console’s Xbox Wireless pairing process; a Bluetooth connection is not the stated console path. |
| Xbox One | Xbox Wireless | The controller is designed to connect through Xbox Wireless on supported Xbox One consoles. |
| Windows 10/11 PC | Bluetooth | The PC needs compatible Bluetooth hardware and an operating system/game that supports the controller. |
| Tablet | Bluetooth | Pair through the tablet’s Bluetooth settings, subject to the tablet and game’s support. |
| iPhone or iPad | Bluetooth | Pair in iOS or iPadOS Bluetooth settings; compatibility depends on the device version and game. |
| Android phone or tablet | Bluetooth | Pair in Android Bluetooth settings; game support and Android-version behavior can vary. |
| Compatible Smart TV | Bluetooth | The television must support Bluetooth game controllers and the game or cloud-gaming app must accept one. |
Microsoft lists Xbox Wireless and Bluetooth as the controller’s connection methods. The official pages do not document a direct Wi-Fi radio or a controller-to-internet connection. Consequently, a cloud-gaming setup still has two separate links: the controller connects to the host device, and that host device connects to the internet and the cloud-gaming service.
How it connects to an Xbox console
Xbox Wireless is the console path
On Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One, Microsoft specifies Xbox Wireless rather than Bluetooth. That distinction matters because an Xbox console’s normal accessory pairing flow is different from the Bluetooth menus used on a phone or PC. You should not expect to open a console Bluetooth list and pair the Nano Controller as if it were a headset.
Basic console pairing sequence
- Power on the Xbox console and the Nano Controller.
- Start the console’s standard Xbox Wireless pairing flow using the console and controller pairing controls.
- Wait for the controller to be recognized, then test navigation on the Xbox dashboard.
- Sign in to the intended Xbox profile if the console asks you to choose one.
The exact on-screen wording can differ between Xbox system software versions, but the important requirement is that both devices use the Xbox Wireless procedure. Microsoft’s specification does not say that you need a separate USB wireless dongle for an Xbox console. If pairing fails, bring the controller close to the console, remove other nearby wireless variables, restart both devices and repeat the normal pairing flow.

How it connects to a Windows PC
Bluetooth is the stated PC method
Microsoft lists Bluetooth support for supported Windows 10 and Windows 11 PCs. A desktop without built-in Bluetooth therefore needs compatible Bluetooth hardware before it can use this wireless path. A laptop commonly has Bluetooth already, but the radio can be disabled in Windows or controlled by a hardware switch.
Windows pairing steps
- Open Settings and go to Bluetooth & devices.
- Turn Bluetooth on, choose Add device, and select Bluetooth.
- Put the Nano Controller into its pairing mode using the controller’s pairing control, then select it when Windows lists it.
- After Windows reports that it is connected, launch the game and choose the Xbox-style controller in the game’s input settings if the game offers a device selector.
Bluetooth pairing and game recognition are separate steps. Windows can show a successful connection while a particular game lacks controller support, maps the buttons unexpectedly or still has keyboard-and-mouse input selected. Test in a game known to accept Xbox-compatible controllers before diagnosing a hardware fault.
How it connects to phones and tablets
iPhone and iPad
For iOS devices, open Settings > Bluetooth, enable Bluetooth, put the controller into pairing mode and tap its name when it appears. The game must support an external controller, and the iPhone or iPad must run a version compatible with the controller’s Bluetooth behavior. A pairing record can remain saved even when the controller is switched off; if another device later connects automatically, disconnect it there before trying the iOS device again.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsAndroid
On Android, open the Bluetooth or Connected devices area in Settings, choose the option to pair a new device, place the controller in pairing mode and select it from the list. Android menus vary by manufacturer. The controller may appear as an Xbox device, and a successful system-level pairing still does not guarantee that every game supports gamepads.

Tablets generally
Microsoft’s tablet reference covers supported Bluetooth-capable tablets rather than every model ever sold. Check the tablet’s operating-system version, Bluetooth status and the game’s controller requirements. If the tablet is managed by a school or workplace, device policies can also restrict new Bluetooth accessories.
Using it with a Smart TV and cloud gaming
Microsoft specifically includes compatible Smart TVs in the Bluetooth description. “Compatible” is important: the television must allow Bluetooth game controllers, and its installed game or cloud-gaming application must accept controller input. Some televisions expose Bluetooth only for audio devices, while others support a limited set of input accessories.
- Open the TV’s Bluetooth accessory or controller settings.
- Put the Nano Controller into pairing mode and select it on the TV.
- Open the game or cloud-gaming app and verify that its controller prompt responds.
- If the app has an input or controller menu, select the connected gamepad there.
Cloud gaming does not mean the Nano Controller joins Wi-Fi by itself. The TV, phone, tablet or PC supplies the internet connection; the controller supplies local input over Bluetooth. That arrangement adds two possible failure points: Bluetooth pairing and the host’s network or app connection. A controller can be paired correctly while a cloud service is offline, logged out or unable to maintain a usable stream.

The Nano Controller has an internal rechargeable battery. Microsoft says a USB-C cable is required for charging and is sold separately. The cable is therefore an additional requirement even though the controller itself is rechargeable. Check that the cable and power source are suitable for USB-C charging; the official product pages do not specify a bundled cable, a charging brick or a particular cable length.

Microsoft’s published pages do not provide a battery-capacity figure or a guaranteed runtime for this specific controller. Do not substitute a runtime measured on another Xbox controller. Until Microsoft publishes a Nano-specific figure, the honest expectation is simply that battery life will depend on use, wireless conditions and the age of the battery, with no official number to quote.
Charging and data connectivity should also be treated as different questions. The documented requirement is a USB-C cable for charging. Microsoft’s cited specifications do not promise that connecting that cable to a PC or console creates a wired gameplay mode, so buy the controller on the assumption that its documented connections are Xbox Wireless for consoles and Bluetooth for the listed devices.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Compatibility: device support is not the same as game support
Microsoft lists Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Xbox on PC, Windows 10/11, Android and iOS. It separately identifies compatible Smart TVs for Bluetooth use. Those categories describe host-device compatibility, not a guarantee that every game in each ecosystem accepts a controller.
Recommended Free Tools
- Console generation: Series X|S and Xbox One use Xbox Wireless.
- PC: Windows 10/11 and Bluetooth hardware are required for the documented wireless route.
- Mobile: iOS and Android support depends on the device, operating-system version and game.
- Television: only Smart TVs that support Bluetooth controllers are in scope.
- Game software: the title must expose controller support; some games support only touch, keyboard and mouse, or a narrower input set.
Before buying for a particular mobile game or television app, check that software’s controller requirements. “Bluetooth connected” in the operating system is not proof that the game will display button prompts or accept input.

Does it need a USB dongle?
For Xbox consoles, Microsoft specifies Xbox Wireless and does not state that a separate USB wireless dongle is required. For PCs, the documented method is Bluetooth. A PC that lacks Bluetooth will need compatible Bluetooth hardware, which could be built in or added separately, but that is different from an Xbox Wireless adapter requirement. The official pages do not list a Nano-specific dongle.
A USB-C cable is a separate matter: Microsoft says one is required for charging and sold separately. That cable should not be confused with a wireless receiver.
Availability and price
The US Microsoft Store lists the XBOX Nano Controller at $49.99 and gives a November 4, 2026 release date. Those details were listed on October 19, 2026, so the product should be described at that point as scheduled for release or available for preorder, not as an already shipping controller. The store listing is at Microsoft Store.
The $49.99 figure is a US listing price, and retailer, tax, shipping and regional pricing can differ. Availability can also change between the listing date and release. If you are outside the United States, look for a local Microsoft listing rather than converting the US amount and assuming the same launch timing.
Troubleshooting by symptom
| Symptom | Likely check | Action |
|---|---|---|
| It will not pair with an Xbox | Wrong connection procedure or excessive distance | Use the Xbox Wireless pairing flow, keep the controller near the console, restart both devices and retry. |
| Windows cannot find it | Bluetooth is disabled or the controller is not in pairing mode | Turn on Bluetooth in Settings, remove an old pairing if necessary, re-enter pairing mode and scan again. |
| Phone says connected but the game ignores it | The game lacks external-controller support or has a different input selected | Test a controller-supported title and inspect that game’s input settings. |
| Smart TV pairs but cloud play does not respond | The TV app does not support controllers or the session is not active | Check the app’s controller requirements, reconnect in the TV menu and confirm the cloud session is running. |
| The controller will not charge | Cable, power source or port issue | Use a known-good USB-C charging cable and power source, inspect the port and allow time for charging before retesting. |
Who should consider the Nano Controller?
It makes the most sense for someone who wants a smaller Xbox-style pad, plays across an Xbox and Bluetooth-capable devices, or needs a rechargeable controller for travel and family use. It is less compelling if you need a published battery-runtime number before buying, require a bundled charging cable, or expect a single wireless standard to work identically on every host.
Use this checklist before ordering:
- Your console is an Xbox Series X|S or Xbox One, or your other host supports Bluetooth controllers.
- Your Windows PC has Bluetooth hardware if you plan to play wirelessly on PC.
- Your phone, tablet or Smart TV runs a compatible version and the games or apps you use accept controllers.
- You have, or plan to buy, a USB-C cable for charging.
- You are comfortable with the US listing’s November 4, 2026 release timing if ordering from the US store.
What to compare with another compact gamepad
If you are weighing the Nano Controller against another small controller, compare documented capabilities rather than assuming that every compact pad works the same way.
Quick Recap
| Comparison question | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Does it support Xbox Wireless on Xbox consoles? | Bluetooth-only pads may not provide the same console connection path. |
| Which devices support Bluetooth? | Coverage may include PCs and phones but exclude a particular TV or console. |
| How small is the physical design? | Hand size, reach and pocketability affect comfort more than a generic “compact” label. |
| Is the battery rechargeable? | Internal charging avoids disposable batteries but creates a cable requirement. |
| Is the charging cable included? | Microsoft says the Nano Controller’s USB-C cable is sold separately. |
| What are the official price and release date? | Launch status and regional pricing can change the value of an apparently similar product. |
| Does it support the games and hosts you actually use? | Operating-system pairing alone does not guarantee in-game input support. |
