tmp.exe is a filename, not a single Windows component. It may be a temporary executable created by an installer or application, or it may be malware using an ordinary-sounding name. A documented startup entry named “WinDLL (tmp.exe)” was classified as undesirable and associated with Net-Worm.Win32.Kolab.l, while other software catalogs list the same basename in unrelated contexts. Treat an unexpected copy as suspicious until you verify its full path, command line, publisher, digital signature and behavior. Do not delete it solely because it is called tmp.exe.
What is tmp.exe?
tmp.exe is simply the name of an executable file. Windows does not assign that name to one universal service, driver or system process. Installers, updaters and other programs can create temporary executables, and malicious software can deliberately choose a bland name to avoid attention.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
The filename therefore tells you almost nothing by itself. The useful evidence is the file’s complete location, the command that launches it, its publisher and signature, the parent program, and whether it appeared after a specific installation or download. A copy in a trusted application folder with a verifiable publisher may be legitimate. A copy that starts at logon from a writable temporary folder, has no valid signature or is detected by Microsoft Defender deserves immediate investigation.
One documented case is a startup entry called WinDLL (tmp.exe). BleepingComputer identifies that entry as an undesirable program and associates it with the Net-Worm.Win32.Kolab.l family. Its command line is shown as rundll32.exe C:WINDOWSsystem32tmp.exe,start. That report does not mean every file with the same basename is the same threat; it demonstrates why path and startup context matter.

Is tmp.exe safe, or is it a virus?
There is no universal yes-or-no answer. An unexpected tmp.exe should be considered suspicious until a scan and provenance check explain it, but deleting every file with that name can break a legitimate installer or application.
Signs that require caution
- The process launches automatically from a Run or RunOnce registry value, a scheduled task or another startup location that you do not recognize.
- The file resides in a user-writable temporary directory, an unfamiliar folder under your profile or another location where any downloaded program could write.
- Properties show no publisher, an invalid signature or a signature that does not match the application that supposedly installed the file.
- Microsoft Defender repeatedly detects the file, the detection returns after reboot, or the computer shows unexplained outbound network activity or credential-theft symptoms.
- The command line uses a legitimate launcher such as
rundll32.exeto start an unfamiliar DLL or executable. The launcher itself may be genuine while the argument is not.
Evidence that can support a legitimate explanation
- You can identify a recent installer or application update that created the file and the path is inside that publisher’s installation directory.
- The file has a valid digital signature from the expected publisher, and the signature remains valid when viewed in the Properties dialog.
- A custom Defender scan is clean and the process disappears when the related installer or application finishes its work.
A valid signature is helpful but not conclusive: stolen or misused certificates exist, and a signed file can still be unwanted. Combine the signature with the path, command line, parent process and scan results.

How do I identify the specific tmp.exe file?
Identify the instance before stopping or removing it. The following procedure records enough context to distinguish a temporary helper from a persistent startup threat.
- Open Task Manager. Press
Ctrl+Shift+Esc, select the Details tab and locatetmp.exe. Right-click it and choose Open file location. Copy the complete path into a note; do not rely on the shortened name shown in the process list. - Record the command line. In Task Manager, add the Command line column if it is not visible, or use the file’s location and the startup entry to determine how it is invoked. A command such as
rundll32.exe C:WINDOWSsystem32tmp.exe,startis materially different from an executable launched by a known installer. - Inspect Properties. Right-click the file, choose Properties, and note the product name, publisher, version and creation date. On the Digital Signatures tab, open the signature details and confirm that Windows reports it as valid and that the signer fits the parent application.
- Find the parent and trigger. Determine which installer or application started the process. Check Settings > Apps > Installed apps for a recently added program, and review startup entries and scheduled tasks for a matching name or command. A startup database entry is not the same thing as a currently running Task Manager process, so verify the live process separately.
- Check Defender’s history. Open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Protection history. Record the detection name, action and path. Do not restore a quarantined file or add an exclusion merely to stop a notification.
- Run a targeted scan. In Windows Security, choose Virus & threat protection > Scan options > Custom scan, then select the exact file or its containing folder. A clean custom scan is useful evidence, but it does not override a suspicious startup location or repeated detections.
Keep the path, command line, signer and detection name together. Those details are what you need if you later repair the parent application, remove an orphaned startup entry or ask an administrator for help.
How do I remove a suspicious tmp.exe safely?
Use a staged cleanup rather than deleting the file first. The goal is to prevent the program from running, remove active malware with current definitions and then repair any Windows damage left behind.
1. Isolate the computer when compromise appears active
Stop opening the file. If detections recur, accounts may be at risk, or you see unexplained outbound traffic, disconnect Wi-Fi or unplug the network cable while you investigate. Avoid signing in to sensitive services on that computer until scans are complete.

2. Update Microsoft Defender and run a Full scan
Open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Protection updates and check for security-intelligence updates. Then choose Scan options > Full scan. A Full scan checks the files and running programs available in the normal Windows session; allow it to finish and follow the action Windows Security recommends for any detection.
3. Use Microsoft Defender Offline if the detection returns
If tmp.exe reappears after the Full scan or is difficult to remove, select Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Scan options > Microsoft Defender Offline scan. Save your work first. Windows restarts into the Windows Recovery Environment and scans before normal Windows processes load, which makes persistent malware harder to hide. After the restart, return to Protection history to review the result.
4. Run Microsoft Safety Scanner as a second, on-demand check
Microsoft Safety Scanner is a manually launched supplemental scanner, not a replacement for full antivirus protection. Download a fresh copy from Microsoft before each later scan because the downloaded tool expires 10 days after download. Run the scan and review its log at %SYSTEMROOT%debugmsert.log. Keep Defender enabled while using it.
5. Consider the Malicious Software Removal Tool for prevalent families
MSRT can complement antivirus protection by checking for certain prevalent malware families, but it is not a substitute for real-time protection or a complete security product. Use it as an additional check, not as the only response to a suspicious startup executable.
Recommended Free Tools
6. Reboot and verify persistence points
Restart after cleanup, then check Protection history again. Review Settings > Apps > Startup, Task Manager’s Startup apps tab and Task Scheduler for entries that still point to the old path. Remove an entry only after you have established that it belongs to the unwanted file or to an application you intentionally uninstalled.
How do I fix a tmp.exe application or startup error?
Messages such as “tmp.exe not found,” “tmp.exe application error” or a recurring startup warning describe a symptom, not a single cause. The usual categories are a stale startup reference, a quarantined file, damage to Windows components or a program that cannot use the temporary directory.

When an installed application names the file
If the alert identifies a parent application, scan the computer first. Once malware has been ruled out, use Settings > Apps > Installed apps, select that application, open its advanced options if available and choose Repair. If Repair is unavailable or ineffective, uninstall and reinstall the application from its official publisher page. Do not download a replacement tmp.exe from a random “system file” or DLL site.
When the file is gone but the popup remains
Antivirus quarantine or an incomplete uninstall can leave a startup command that points to a nonexistent file. Confirm the path and owner first, then remove the orphaned entry from Settings > Apps > Startup, Task Manager’s Startup apps list or the corresponding scheduled task. Registry edits should be a last resort: export the relevant key, remove only the confirmed orphaned value and restart to test. Do not delete a whole startup location because one value is wrong.
When Windows reports protected-file corruption
Open Command Prompt as an administrator and run:
sfc /scannow
System File Checker scans protected Windows files and replaces incorrect versions when possible. If you need to target one known protected file, the syntax is:
sfc /scanfile=<full path>
For example, replace <full path> with the complete path to the protected file you have identified; do not use this command to guess that tmp.exe is a Windows component.
When SFC reports component-store problems
Service the Windows image with Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM), then run SFC again:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
sfc /scannow
DISM repairs the Windows image and component store used for features, packages, drivers and related servicing tasks. The command sequence repairs Windows components; it does not diagnose malware by itself. Record the exact output, including any error code, before closing the window.

How do I fix a “Failed to create temporary folder” error?
A temporary-folder error can prevent an installer or diagnostic tool from creating its working files. It may involve the path or permissions for the %TEMP% and %TMP% environment variables rather than the tmp.exe file itself.
- Open File Explorer and enter
%TEMP%in the address bar. Confirm that the folder opens and that your account can create and delete a small test file. - Check the variables by opening Settings > System > About > Advanced system settings > Environment Variables. Under User variables, inspect
TEMPandTMP; note their original values before changing anything. - If the existing location is missing or inaccessible, create a new temporary directory in a location your account can write to, then point both user variables to that directory.
- Run the installer or diagnostic again. If it completes, return the variables to their original values when the procedure is finished, then restart the affected application.
Do not grant broad “Everyone” control to a temporary folder just to bypass an error. Correct the path and use the narrowest permissions that allow the installer to work.
Which Windows tool should I use first?
These tools have different jobs. A malware scanner and a Windows component repair command are not interchangeable, so use the one that matches the evidence.
| Tool | How it runs | What it is for | Important limitation or result |
|---|---|---|---|
| Microsoft Defender Full scan | Windows Security, on demand in normal Windows | Broad malware check using current security intelligence | Run after updating definitions; review Protection history for actions taken |
| Microsoft Defender Offline | Windows Security, then a restart into Windows Recovery Environment | Scan before normal Windows processes load | Useful when a threat returns or may hide during a normal session |
| Microsoft Safety Scanner | Manually launched download | Supplemental malware scan | Download expires 10 days after download; details are logged in %SYSTEMROOT%debugmsert.log |
| MSRT | Manually or through Windows servicing, depending on distribution | Check for certain prevalent malware families | Complements antivirus and is not a replacement for full protection |
| SFC | Elevated Command Prompt | Scan and replace incorrect protected Windows files when possible | Use /scanfile=<full path> only when you have identified a specific protected file |
| DISM | Elevated Command Prompt | Service and repair the Windows image and component store | Often precedes a second sfc /scannow when SFC reports component-store problems |
What should I not do with tmp.exe?
- Do not assume the basename proves anything. Both legitimate temporary programs and unwanted software can use
tmp.exe. - Do not delete it before recording the path and command line. You may remove evidence or break an installer that is still running.
- Do not download a replacement executable from an untrusted file repository.
- Do not delete
rundll32.exe. In the documented suspicious command, it is the legitimate Windows launcher; the concern is the file and arguments it launches. - Do not disable Defender or create a broad exclusion to silence an alert. An exclusion prevents Defender from checking that item in real time.
- Do not run registry cleaners or generic “repair” utilities first. Scan and document the file before changing startup or registry data.
- Do not restore a quarantined file unless you have independently established its publisher, path and purpose.
How can I prevent a recurring tmp.exe warning?
- Keep Windows Security security intelligence current and investigate every repeated detection instead of dismissing it.
- Install applications and game launchers only from their official publisher pages or trusted distribution channels, and note which installer created a temporary executable.
- After uninstalling software, check Startup apps and scheduled tasks for entries that still point to the removed program.
- Maintain backups of personal saves and documents so you can recover without restoring a suspicious executable.
- If a machine showed signs of credential theft, change important passwords from a known-clean device after cleanup and enable multifactor authentication where available.
