toefl.exe is not automatically a genuine TOEFL program just because its name contains “toefl.” The official ETS installation flow refers to the TOEFL Test App, while ETS troubleshooting documentation names rpLauncherMain.exe. A third-party sandbox report observed toeflLauncher.exe in one ETS installation. None of those sources proves that every file literally named toefl.exe is legitimate. Treat the file as unverified until you check where it came from, its complete path, digital signature, hash, and security-scan results. If the file belongs to an official Home Edition installation, use the documented launcher and TLS fixes below; if it came from an unknown download or keeps returning after removal, investigate it as a potential unwanted or malicious program.
What is toefl.exe?
The name toefl.exe is simply an executable filename. Windows does not use a filename to prove who created a program, and unrelated software can choose the same name. ETS’s current user instructions tell test takers to install the TOEFL Test App from the My TOEFL Home dashboard. ETS troubleshooting material identifies rpLauncherMain.exe as a launcher component, and one independent sandbox report recorded toeflLauncher.exe beneath an ETS installation.

Is toefl.exe safe or malware?
You cannot answer that from the filename alone. Provenance is the strongest first signal: a file installed by running the current installer obtained through My TOEFL Home is more credible than one downloaded from a software mirror, a pop-up, an email attachment or a random “DLL fix” page. Even an official-looking path should be checked because malware can create folders with convincing names.

These checks are cumulative, not a guarantee. A clean scan does not turn an unknown download into an ETS file, and a valid signature does not explain why a component appeared in an unrelated folder. If you cannot establish the source and publisher, do not grant an exclusion just to make it run.
How can I identify the file before deleting it?
Record evidence first. Removing a suspicious file can destroy the information ETS or Microsoft needs to determine what happened, and a legitimate launcher may be restored automatically by a later installation.

Copy the complete path exactly. - In File Explorer, right-click the file, select Properties, and note the size, creation and modification dates, and the Digital Signatures tab. Open the signature details and confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid.
- Write down how the file arrived: My TOEFL Home, an installer already on the PC, a download, an attachment or an unknown source. Also record the exact error message and the time it appeared.
- Run a current Microsoft Defender scan. If the alert returns or Windows reports an active threat, use a Defender Offline scan rather than repeatedly launching the file.
- For an exact file fingerprint, open Windows Terminal or Command Prompt in the file’s folder and run
certutil -hashfile "toefl.exe" SHA256. A hash identifies those exact bytes; it is useful when support asks for the file, but it is not by itself proof that the program is trustworthy.
Do not upload a potentially sensitive test component to an arbitrary “online scanner.” If ETS support or Microsoft needs more information, provide the path, signature status, hash, installer source, scan result and timestamp through their official support channels.
How do I reinstall the official TOEFL Test App?
Start over from ETS’s current account flow instead of searching the web for a replacement executable.

- Select Install the TOEFL Test App.
- Choose Windows, download the installer and run the file to complete installation.
- Open the installed ETS Online Test icon and run Equipment Check.
- Follow the advice shown for any failed check. ETS indicates failed checks with a red triangle and provides tips; use Equipment Check Support if the self-help instructions do not resolve it.
Keep the original installer source and the new installation path in your notes. If a file named toefl.exe remains elsewhere, do not assume the reinstall made it legitimate; identify that separate copy using the verification steps above.
How do I fix the “Not able to extract” error?
ETS documents a launcher command for this specific message. It is different from a generic Windows extraction failure.

C:ProgramDataETSIBT2rprpLauncherMain.exe. - After the launcher command runs, start the ETS Online Test icon again.
- According to ETS, installation and secure-browser launch should resume and complete. If it does not, record the exact message, confirm that the path exists, and reinstall from My TOEFL Home rather than downloading a launcher from another site.
If Windows says the path is missing, that is useful evidence: the installation may be incomplete, the folder may have been removed by security software, or your installation uses a different component name. Do not create a substitute executable with the same filename.
How do I fix “Not able to download software”?
For this message, ETS’s documented remedy is enabling TLS 1.2 in Windows Internet Options.

- Press the Windows key, type Internet Options, and open it.
- Select the Advanced tab.
- In the security settings list, enable Use TLS 1.2.
- Select Apply, then OK.
- Relaunch the ETS Online Test icon and try the download again.
If the option is already enabled, do not weaken other security protocols to compensate. Check that Windows is online, the system date and time are correct, and that a corporate proxy or filtering product is not interrupting the download. For managed computers, ask the administrator to review the proxy and TLS policy.
What should I do if the ETS Online Test icon does nothing?
First separate a launch problem from an equipment or environment problem. Open Task Manager to see whether a launcher appears briefly and exits, then check Windows Security for a blocked or quarantined component. Run the documented rpLauncherMain.exe command if the failure follows an extraction message, and repeat the official installation if the component is missing.

Screen-sharing and remote-access software can interfere with testing even when the app itself is installed correctly; make sure those tools cannot start during the test. If the icon still produces no visible response, capture the timestamp and any Event Viewer or Windows Security entry and send that evidence to ETS support.
Which Windows and room requirements can affect launch or testing?
ETS currently lists a licensed Windows 11 or later environment for the relevant test flow. It also lists one monitor and requires a keyboard, speaker, microphone and camera. Requirements can vary by test appointment, so use the checks shown in your My TOEFL Home account as the controlling list.

- Run Equipment Check on the same computer and network you plan to use.
- Repeat the bandwidth check at a time comparable with the scheduled test; a result can change with network congestion.
- Disconnect extra monitors and close unneeded applications.
- Prevent remote-access and screen-sharing programs from launching.
- Confirm that Windows can access the camera, microphone and speaker and that no other application has exclusive control.
Passing an equipment check does not authenticate an arbitrary toefl.exe; it only shows that the tested environment met the checks at that moment.
How should I respond to a malware warning?
Do not bypass a warning simply because the file appears to be related to TOEFL. Update Microsoft Defender, run a full scan, and use Microsoft Defender Offline if the detection returns after a restart or the file keeps reappearing. Save your work before starting an Offline scan because Windows will restart the computer.

Exclusions stop Defender from scanning the excluded file or location. Use one only when you have independently established that the file is clean and necessary; an exclusion is not a repair and can hide a later replacement. If the file came from an unknown source, leave it quarantined, remove the untrusted installer, and reinstall through My TOEFL Home after the computer is clean.

- Full path, file size, dates, publisher and signature status.
- Installer source and whether the file returned after removal.
- SHA-256 hash, Defender scan result and any Offline-scan result.
- Windows edition, network type, and whether remote-access software was installed or running.
Support cannot make a reliable identity judgment from the filename alone. A missing path, unknown installer source or absent hash should be reported as an unresolved identity issue rather than described as proof of malware.

Should I restore a quarantined toefl.exe file?
Only restore it after you have verified its installer source, checked its digital signature and obtained a clean current scan. If any of those checks fail, leave it quarantined and reinstall the TOEFL Test App from My TOEFL Home instead.
Why can’t I find toefl.exe in the ETS folder?
That is not necessarily a problem. ETS documentation and observed installations use other names, including rpLauncherMain.exe and toeflLauncher.exe, so a genuine installation may not contain a file literally named toefl.exe.
Does a SHA-256 hash prove that an executable is safe?
No. A hash proves only that the bytes match a particular file. It becomes useful when combined with a trusted download source, a valid publisher signature and a clean security scan.
What information should I keep if the app fails again after reinstalling?
Keep the installer source, full executable path, exact error text, timestamp, signature details and Defender result. That record lets support distinguish an incomplete installation, a network or TLS failure, an environment conflict and a security event.
