Why convincing Telegram names are dangerous
On March 17, 2026, K7 Labs documented a campaign using the typosquatted domain telegrgam[.]com to deliver a file called tsetup-x64.6.exe. The analysis described Defender exclusions being added, staged files being dropped, a DLL launched through rundll32.exe, an encoded payload reconstructed in memory, and command-and-control traffic: https://labs.k7computing.com/index.php/fake-telegram-malware-campaign-analysis-of-a-multi-stage-loader-delivered-via-typosquatted-websites/. This is evidence that a Telegram-style installer name can be used as camouflage; it is not evidence that every file with a similar name is malicious.
Microsoft Security Research has likewise described counterfeit software-download pages that impersonate trusted vendors, weaken security protections, establish persistence and communicate with attacker infrastructure. Those messages can be caused by a damaged or incomplete download, a Windows trust or signature problem, or interference from security software. They do not identify the cause by themselves, and the available report concerns a different version.

- Check persistence and execution clues. Review Task Manager > Startup apps, Task Scheduler, recently created files and unfamiliar services. Pay particular attention to unexpected PowerShell activity,
rundll32.exelaunches, newly created DLLs and outbound connections to unknown hosts. - Escalate when evidence remains. If Defender reports a threat, protections were disabled, suspicious persistence remains, or the PC contains sensitive information, involve an incident-response professional. Restoring from a known-good backup or reinstalling Windows may be safer than trying to remove every component manually.
