tswbprxy.exe is a legitimate Microsoft Windows component when its path, signature and behavior match the Remote Desktop Services Web Proxy. It is used by RemoteApp and Desktop Connections, but the filename alone does not prove that a particular copy is safe. A damaged or missing copy can trigger application-error and initialization messages. A fake copy can use the same name to hide malware, and Microsoft documented a historical TS WebProxy vulnerability (CVE-2015-0016). Check the file before deleting anything, install current Windows updates, run Windows integrity and malware checks, and investigate Remote Desktop services separately if the real problem is an RDP connection failure.
What is tswbprxy.exe?
Microsoft identifies Tswbprxy.exe as the runtime proxy used by RemoteApp and Desktop Connections. Microsoft Learn describes the Remote Desktop Services Web Access Control as supporting the publication of user-specific resources in RemoteApp and Desktop Connection; the control wraps the Remote Desktop Connection client (MsTscAx.dll) and this runtime proxy.

Windows may display the name with different capitalization, but those spellings refer to the same executable name.
The process is normally involved when a RemoteApp or a published desktop is opened. It does not need to be running continuously on every PC, so seeing it briefly is not, by itself, suspicious. Conversely, a process named tswbprxy.exe is not automatically trustworthy: malware can copy a legitimate filename.

Where a legitimate copy may be found
A FreeFixer file record describes a Microsoft-signed sample in a Windows SoftwareDistribution servicing-download directory. Such directories are used while Windows stages update files and may be cleaned or recreated later, so that example is a comparison point rather than a universal path that every current Windows 10 or Windows 11 installation must use. The important test is whether the location is controlled by Windows and whether the file’s metadata and signature agree with it.
A copy in a user-writable Downloads, temporary, profile or app-data folder deserves extra scrutiny. It could be a harmless diagnostic copy, but it is not where you should expect an operating-system proxy to be launched without an explanation. Record the complete path, including the drive letter, before moving or deleting anything.

It is a genuine Microsoft component, but safety must be judged from the particular file on your computer. Use the path, publisher, digital signature, metadata and process context together rather than relying on the name or on a single antivirus result.
Check the running process in Task Manager
- Press
Ctrl+Shift+Escto open Task Manager. - Choose Details. If the process is visible, right-click tswbprxy.exe and select Open file location. If it is not running, locate the file with File Explorer or use the path shown in the error message.
- Record the complete path before closing anything. A path under a Windows-managed servicing or system location is more consistent with the Microsoft component than a copy in a user-writable temporary, Downloads or profile folder, but the location alone is not proof.
Verify publisher and signature
- Right-click the file, choose Properties, and inspect the Details tab. Compare the product, company, description and original filename with the Microsoft metadata above.
- Open Digital Signatures, select the Microsoft signature, choose Details, and confirm that Windows reports a valid signature. A missing, invalid or unrelated signature is a reason to stop and investigate.
- Check the file’s creation and modification dates against recent servicing or recovery work. Dates are supporting evidence only; they can change during updates, restores and migrations.
Look for behavior that does not fit the component
Unexpected network connections, unexplained child processes, repeated recreation after removal, or a copy that launches from a temporary folder all make a malicious impersonation more plausible. Preserve the path and file properties rather than deleting the file immediately so a security professional can examine them.
FreeFixer has reported a Microsoft-signed sample in a Windows servicing-download location and a snapshot in which 57 VirusTotal scanners detected no malware. That is a historical observation about one sample, not a current guarantee for every file called tswbprxy.exe.

No single row proves that a file is clean. Treat the combination as triage evidence, then use Windows Security or qualified incident-response help when the indicators conflict.

Why does tswbprxy.exe generate errors?
The same message can come from a missing file, corrupted system components, an incomplete update, incompatible servicing files, a blocked or altered executable, or a broader Remote Desktop failure. Identify the symptom before choosing a repair.

TSWbPrxy.exeis missing
A missing-file dialog points toward Windows servicing and integrity checks. A failure that occurs only when connecting to a remote desktop may instead involve TermService, UmRdpService, firewall rules, authentication or the remote host. Do not replace the executable until you know which branch you are troubleshooting.
Separate file failures from connection failures
- File-focused symptom: Windows names TSWbPrxy.exe in a startup, application or initialization dialog, or reports that the file is missing or not a valid Win32 application. Start with the path and signature, then Windows Update, DISM, SFC and malware scanning.
- RDP-focused symptom: The file is present and signed, but a remote session will not connect, disconnects, or cannot redirect resources. Check TermService, UmRdpService, target availability, account permissions and firewall policy.
- Security-focused symptom: The file is unsigned, appears outside a Windows location, returns after removal, or has unexplained network activity. Preserve evidence and investigate it as a possible impersonation instead of repeatedly reinstalling the client.
How should I fix a missing or damaged tswbprxy.exe file?
Use the following sequence. It starts with reversible evidence collection and Microsoft servicing, then checks system integrity and malware, and only afterward moves to service or recovery work.
1. Record the evidence
- Write down the exact error text, the application that launched it, the time it appeared and whether RemoteApp or a published desktop was involved.
- Record the full executable path, file size, version, publisher and signature status from Properties.
- Do not rename, delete or download a replacement executable at this stage. Removing a legitimate component can create a second failure and destroys useful evidence.
2. Install current Windows updates
Open Settings > Windows Update (on older releases, use Control Panel > System and Security > Windows Update), select Check for updates, install applicable quality, security and servicing updates, and restart when Windows requests it. Recheck Windows Update after the restart because a servicing-stack update can enable a later cumulative update.
Microsoft’s MS15-004 bulletin addressed CVE-2015-0016, a directory-traversal elevation-of-privilege vulnerability in the TS WebProxy component. The update corrected Windows path sanitization. The bulletin describes exploitation involving a specially crafted application together with an Internet Explorer vulnerability. This is a historical security bulletin; current protection comes from keeping the supported Windows edition patched, not from downloading an old standalone executable.
The bulletin says a successful attacker could gain the current user’s rights. An account with administrative rights would expose more system capability, which is why patching and least-privilege use matter even when no error is visible.

A Microsoft Support table for the Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 update context lists Tswbprxy.exe version 6.3.9600.17553. That version and its listed file sizes apply to that legacy update scenario, not as a universal baseline for Windows 10 or Windows 11. Do not reject a current signed file merely because its version number differs from that historical table.
3. Repair the component store with DISM
On Windows 10 or Windows 11, right-click Start, choose Terminal (Admin) or Windows PowerShell (Admin), approve the User Account Control prompt, and run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealthWait for the operation to reach 100 percent. It may appear paused for several minutes. If DISM reports that the source files cannot be found, make sure Windows Update is working and retry after installing pending updates; do not copy an executable from an untrusted website as a substitute source. Keep the completion message because it tells support whether component-store corruption was detected or repaired.
4. Run System File Checker
In the same elevated terminal, run:
sfc /scannowAllow the scan to finish. If it reports that it repaired files, restart and test the application again. If it says some files could not be repaired, run DISM again, restart, and repeat SFC. Save the result shown at the end so support staff can see whether Windows found integrity violations. Run these commands from an administrator account; a non-elevated window can fail before it checks the protected files.
5. Scan for malware with Windows Security
- Open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Scan options.
- Run a Full scan. If the path, signature or behavior is strongly suspicious, use Microsoft Defender Offline scan; Windows will restart and scan outside the normal desktop.
- Let Windows Security quarantine a file only when its detection or the combined path and signature evidence supports that action. Record the detection name and quarantined path.
A scan that finds nothing does not authenticate every file named tswbprxy.exe. Keep the signature and path evidence, especially when the executable is unsigned or outside a Windows-managed location. A second-opinion scanner can be useful for a disputed detection, but installing multiple real-time antivirus products at once can create conflicts; use one active protection product and follow its vendor’s guidance.
6. Repair Windows with a supported recovery option
If updates, DISM, SFC and malware checks do not restore the file, use Settings > System > Recovery on current Windows, or the equivalent recovery tools on your edition. A restore point can return system files and registry settings to an earlier state; choose a point created before the failure and understand that applications, drivers and updates installed afterward may be removed. Back up personal files first.

For a severely damaged installation, an in-place repair using installation media for the same Windows edition and language can reinstall system components while preserving personal files and applications when the setup choices allow it. Match the edition and architecture, back up important data, and disconnect unnecessary external devices. A clean installation is a last resort because it removes applications and data from the system drive.
What should I do if Remote Desktop itself will not connect?
If the error appears during an RDP connection rather than as a missing-file dialog, check the Remote Desktop services before replacing files.
Check the required services
- Press
Win+R, enterservices.msc, and press Enter. - Find Remote Desktop Services (service name
TermService). Confirm that it is running and that its startup configuration has not been disabled by policy. - Find Remote Desktop Services UserMode Port Redirector (service name
UmRdpService) and check its status as well. - After recording the current settings, restart a service only if you are authorized to do so and no remote session depends on it. Test the connection again.
Also verify that Remote Desktop is enabled on the target PC, the account is permitted to connect, the target is reachable on the expected network, and firewall policy allows Remote Desktop. These checks address connectivity; they will not repair a corrupt executable.
Should I remove tswbprxy.exe or use the old registry workaround?
No. Deleting a file solely because its name is unfamiliar can break RemoteApp and Desktop Connections. Quarantine or remove it only after a trusted security scan or qualified incident-response analysis identifies it as malicious, and keep a copy of the evidence for review.

Do not download a loose tswbprxy.exe replacement from a file-collection or “DLL fix” site.

Why did tswbprxy.exe appear after a Windows update?
Servicing operations can stage or replace Remote Desktop components in Windows-managed download and installation directories. A newly dated file can therefore be normal after maintenance; verify the Microsoft signature and metadata instead of judging the file by its timestamp alone.
Can I copy tswbprxy.exe from another Windows computer?

Is CVE-2015-0016 proof that my current PC is infected?

No. Windows servicing directories are a plausible location for a staged component, and a Microsoft-signed sample has been reported there, but any local copy still needs a valid signature, matching metadata and sensible process behavior.
Can I fix the problem without buying a repair tool?
Usually, start with the Windows tools already included with the operating system: Windows Update, DISM, SFC, Windows Security and supported recovery options. Third-party utilities are optional and cannot substitute for verifying an unsigned or suspicious executable.
Should I edit the registry if the old vulnerability worries me?
Not as a routine repair. The documented Low Rights ElevationPolicy change was a narrow historical mitigation that stops TSWbPrxy.exe from running in the Internet Explorer sandbox and may disable functionality. Patch Windows and obtain qualified guidance before considering it.
