ubmdrivebench.exe (also shown as UBMDriveBench.exe) is a drive-benchmark component used by UserBenchmark. It is not a Windows system file. A copy launched by an intentional UserBenchmark installation can be legitimate, but the filename alone cannot prove that it is safe: security services have flagged particular samples, especially repacked or unwanted installers. Treat an unexpected, unsigned, or oddly located copy as suspicious. First record its path, parent process, signature, and SHA-256 hash; then scan that exact file. You can usually resolve a harmless benchmark problem by repairing or removing UserBenchmark, while a driver, storage, or boot failure requires Windows or manufacturer diagnostics rather than downloading a replacement EXE.
What is ubmdrivebench.exe?
ubmdrivebench.exe is the executable that performs a drive test for UserBenchmark. In observed UserBenchmark process trees, UBMDriveBench.exe is created and started by UserBenchMarkRunEngine.exe. Copies have run from a UserBenchMarkTemp folder or another UserBenchmark application-data directory while the benchmark is running.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThat makes it an application component, not a process required by Windows itself. Windows does not need this file to start, run games, or manage a disk. It appears only when UserBenchmark is installed or when remnants of its installer or benchmark engine remain. The spelling can vary in Task Manager, Explorer, logs, and security products because the program may be displayed as ubmdrivebench.exe or UBMDriveBench.exe.
Is ubmdrivebench.exe safe or malware?
There is no universal yes-or-no verdict. Safety depends on the exact file, its source, its location, its signature, and its hash. A copy created by a UserBenchmark download from a source you deliberately used is more plausible than a copy that appeared after installing unrelated software, but provenance still needs verification.

| Evidence | What it suggests | What it does not prove |
|---|---|---|
Parent process is UserBenchMarkRunEngine.exe |
Consistent with the observed UserBenchmark benchmark workflow. | It does not prove that the parent or child is an unmodified, safe download. |
Path contains UserBenchMarkTemp or UserBenchmark application data |
Consistent with observed benchmark behavior. | A familiar folder name can be created by an unwanted or repacked installer. |
| Valid digital signature from the expected publisher | Supports that the file was signed by that publisher and was not changed after signing. | A signature does not by itself establish that the software is desirable or free of every risk. |
| Hash matches a clean, trusted reference | Provides an exact-file comparison. | A different version can legitimately have a different hash; a name match is not a hash match. |
| Security detection on the exact hash | Requires quarantine and further investigation. | Older or generic labels can be sample-specific and are not a prevalence estimate. |
ANY.RUN marked one UserBenchMark installer sample “Malicious activity” in an analysis dated 2022-01-06. Its process tree showed UBMDriveBench.exe being dropped and run. ThreatInfo lists other UBMDriveBench hashes with Trojan.Gen and Adware.Gen detections, while warning that legitimate software can share names with unwanted or repacked installers. Those records describe the listed samples, not every current UserBenchmark download. They are a reason to check the hash on your computer, not proof that every copy is malicious.
How do I check whether the copy on my PC is legitimate?
Do the checks before deleting the file. They preserve the evidence needed to distinguish a normal benchmark component from a malicious or damaged copy.
Recommended Free Tools
1. Record the complete path
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
- On the Processes or Details tab, find
ubmdrivebench.exeorUBMDriveBench.exe. - Right-click it and choose Open file location. Copy the complete path into a text file or take a screenshot.
A path under a UserBenchmark temporary or application-data directory is consistent with the observed process tree. A copy in an unrelated system, downloads, public, or randomly named directory is not established as legitimate merely because the filename is familiar. Do not open the file to “test” it.
2. Check the publisher and signature
- In the file’s folder, right-click the executable and choose Properties.
- Open Digital Signatures, if that tab exists, select the signature, and choose Details.
- Confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid and note the signer, signing time, and certificate chain.
An absent, invalid, or unexpected signature increases the risk, but it is not a standalone malware verdict. A familiar product name in the file description can be copied by an impostor.
3. Calculate a SHA-256 hash
Open PowerShell, substitute the path you recorded, and run:
Get-FileHash -LiteralPath "C:fullpathubmdrivebench.exe" -Algorithm SHA256
Copy the resulting hash exactly. Compare it with a reputable multi-engine reputation service or with a hash supplied by the software distributor. ThreatInfo’s detections are tied to specific hashes, so a report about a different hash does not establish the status of your file. Conversely, a matching detection is a reason to quarantine the file and investigate its source.

4. Identify the parent process and installation source
In Task Manager, switch to Details, right-click the column headings, and enable Process name and, where available, Parent process. The observed parent is UserBenchMarkRunEngine.exe. Ask whether you intentionally installed UserBenchmark and whether the timestamp fits that installation. If you do not recognize the installer, preserve the path and hash before ending the process.
5. Scan the exact file
Use a current Microsoft Defender scan or another reputable antivirus product. Scan the file itself and then the containing folder, rather than relying only on a quick scan of an unrelated location. If the file is flagged or you cannot explain its origin, choose quarantine first; do not restore it merely because the name resembles a benchmark component. Keep the detection name, path, hash, and date for support or incident reporting.
Why is ubmdrivebench.exe running from AppData or Temp?
Benchmark installers commonly unpack working files into an application-data or temporary directory so the test engine can run and then clean up. UserBenchmark samples observed in sandbox reports used a UserBenchMarkTemp directory or another UserBenchmark data path, so that location alone is not abnormal.
However, temporary storage also makes it easy for a repacked installer or an unwanted program to drop a file. Evaluate the full path, parent process, signature, hash, and installation history together. A process that reappears after you close UserBenchmark, starts at every logon, or is launched by an unrecognized scheduled task deserves additional scrutiny.
How do I remove ubmdrivebench.exe safely?
Use the following order so that you do not delete evidence, leave persistence behind, or remove a file while it is still in use.
1. Preserve evidence and quarantine a suspicious copy
- Save the full path, parent process, signature result, SHA-256 hash, and any antivirus detection.
- If security software reports the file, quarantine it through that product. Do not execute it again to see what happens.
- If the computer contains business or diagnostic data, consult your administrator before deleting application files.
2. Uninstall UserBenchmark if you do not need it
- Open Settings and select Apps > Installed apps.
- Search for UserBenchmark, select the three-dot menu, and choose Uninstall.
- On older Windows editions, open Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features, select UserBenchmark, and choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows and check Task Manager again.
Uninstalling the parent application is safer than deleting a child EXE while its benchmark engine is active. If the uninstaller itself is flagged, let your security product quarantine it and use Windows’ installed-app removal options rather than downloading a replacement uninstaller from a random site.

3. Remove confirmed leftovers
After quarantine, uninstallation, and a restart, inspect the recorded UserBenchmark temporary or application-data folders. Delete only folders that you can identify as leftovers and that are no longer needed for a support case or diagnostic record. If Windows says a file is in use, stop and investigate the process holding it instead of forcing deletion.
4. Check startup entries and scheduled tasks
- Open Settings > Apps > Startup and disable an identifiable UserBenchmark entry you no longer want.
- Open Task Scheduler and review Task Scheduler Library for entries that clearly reference UserBenchmark.
- Disable or remove an entry only after confirming its full executable path and publisher. Do not delete an unknown task solely because its name looks similar.
Run another security scan after cleanup. If the file returns, note which process or task recreated it; recurrence is more useful evidence than repeatedly deleting the same file.
How do I fix a UserBenchmark drive-test error?
A benchmark error is not automatically a malware incident. First separate an application failure from a Windows driver, disk, or boot problem.
When only the benchmark fails
- Close UserBenchmark and restart Windows to release locked temporary files.
- Confirm that the drive appears in File Explorer and Disk Management and that you have sufficient free space for temporary benchmark data.
- Run the installed application again only if its source, signature, and scan results are satisfactory.
- If the error persists, uninstall UserBenchmark and obtain a fresh installer from the publisher you intentionally choose; do not use “DLL fixer,” crack, or unofficial mirror sites.
A failed benchmark by itself does not establish that the drive is failing. Use the operating system and manufacturer diagnostics below when the drive disappears, reports I/O errors, or causes crashes outside the benchmark.
When Windows reports a driver-load or Code Integrity error
Windows’ kernel Code Integrity feature helps ensure that kernel drivers are cryptographically signed by an authority trusted by Microsoft. Microsoft Learn explains that when signing policy blocks a driver, the device status can say Windows could not load it and that the driver might be corrupted or missing.
- Open Device Manager by right-clicking Start and selecting it.
- Expand the device category associated with the error, right-click the device, and choose Properties.
- Read the General tab’s device status and record any error code.
- Use Driver > Roll Back Driver if a recent, known-good update caused the problem; otherwise choose Update Driver and use a driver from the device or PC manufacturer.
- Open Event Viewer, choose Applications and Services Logs > Microsoft > Windows > CodeIntegrity > Operational, and review events at the time of the failure.
Do not replace a missing driver with an EXE from a download site. A driver error can be unrelated to UBMDriveBench, even if the message appeared while a benchmark was running.

When the computer is a Lenovo system
Use Lenovo’s official Diagnostics for Windows or UEFI diagnostic package for the exact model. UEFI diagnostics are useful when Windows cannot start; Windows diagnostics are convenient when the operating system still runs. Follow the manufacturer’s recovery instructions for your model and keep important data backed up before a long storage test.
A blank, bootable USB flash drive can hold downloaded diagnostic or recovery media when Lenovo’s instructions require it. The USB is a delivery medium, not a replacement for ubmdrivebench.exe, and it will not make an untrusted executable safe.
What should I do if the drive is missing, tests fail, or Windows will not boot?
Stop treating the problem as an ordinary application error when the drive is not detected, storage diagnostics fail, files become unreadable, or Windows cannot boot. Repeated benchmark attempts can add load without repairing a failing disk.
- Shut down normally if possible and disconnect nonessential external storage.
- Use the computer maker’s pre-boot or UEFI diagnostics and record the exact test code.
- Prioritize a backup or professional data-recovery assessment before destructive repairs if the data matters.
- Contact Lenovo or a qualified repair and data-recovery provider when the drive fails diagnostics, is absent from firmware, or Windows remains unbootable.
Do not initialize, format, or repeatedly reinstall Windows on a disk that may contain the only copy of important files. A benchmark executable cannot diagnose every physical storage failure.

Can I delete ubmdrivebench.exe directly?
Only after you have recorded the evidence, stopped or quarantined the process, and confirmed that UserBenchmark is not needed. Direct deletion may leave the parent application, startup entry, scheduled task, or installer behind, and it removes the file that security or support staff may need to examine. Uninstalling the parent program and then cleaning confirmed leftovers is the safer general path.
If the file is in an unrelated directory, unsigned, recreated after deletion, or detected by security software, do not assume that deleting it solves the incident. Quarantine it, scan the system, inspect persistence locations, and investigate the program that created it.

How can I prevent the same error or suspicious file from returning?
- Install benchmark utilities only when you have a clear reason to use them, and keep the installer source and date.
- Before running a downloaded executable, check its digital signature and scan it with current security software.
- Keep Windows, storage-controller drivers, chipset drivers, and firmware current through Windows Update or the computer/device manufacturer.
- Leave enough free space for temporary benchmark files and close disk-intensive applications during a test.
- Keep a current backup so a storage diagnostic does not become a data-loss emergency.
- Record exact paths and hashes when an alert appears; generic filename searches are not reliable identification.
Which response fits the symptom?
| Symptom | First response | Escalate when |
|---|---|---|
| UserBenchmark closes or the drive test fails, but Windows and the drive work normally | Restart, verify the file, reinstall or uninstall UserBenchmark, and avoid unofficial installers. | The problem persists after a clean, verified installation. |
| Unexpected file in an unrelated folder | Record path and hash, quarantine with current security software, and inspect startup and scheduled tasks. | The file returns, multiple detections appear, or other accounts show suspicious activity. |
| Unsigned or blocked driver | Use Device Manager and review Code Integrity/Operational events. | The device remains unusable after a manufacturer driver rollback or update. |
| Drive missing, unreadable, or failing diagnostics | Stop repeated tests, back up if possible, and run manufacturer pre-boot diagnostics. | Diagnostics fail, firmware cannot see the drive, or Windows will not boot. |

FAQ
Does Windows need ubmdrivebench.exe to run games?
No. It is a UserBenchmark drive-test component, not a Windows gaming service or a required system executable. Removing an unwanted copy should not be presented as a way to increase game performance; address storage, driver, or game-specific problems separately.
Why do two security scanners give different names for the same file?
Generic detections such as Trojan.Gen or Adware.Gen are reputation labels, and different vendors use different classification rules. Compare the exact SHA-256 hash, file path, signature, and scan date instead of treating the label text as a complete diagnosis.
Should I upload a suspicious copy for analysis?
Check your organization’s privacy and security policy first because an executable can contain proprietary paths or configuration data. If analysis is allowed, preserve the hash and metadata and use a reputable multi-engine service or your security provider; do not send confidential files to an unknown website.
What information will technical support ask for?
Have the Windows edition, exact error text or code, complete executable path, parent process, digital-signature result, SHA-256 hash, security-detection name, and the time the problem began. For storage or boot failures, also provide the manufacturer diagnostic code and whether the drive appears in firmware.
