uirobot.exe (usually displayed as UiRobot.exe) is the command-line interface for UiPath Robot. It starts, stops, monitors and administers UiPath automations; it is not a Windows system file. A copy can be legitimate when UiPath Robot or Studio is installed, the file is in a documented or deliberately chosen installation folder, its UiPath digital signature is valid and Microsoft Defender has not identified it as a threat.
The filename alone cannot establish safety. Verify the complete path, publisher signature, hash and Defender event before allowing, restoring or deleting the file. If the file is genuine but fails, the usual causes are the UiPath Robot service, mismatched privilege levels, UAC or logon-session problems, resource shortages, oversized job messages or display-context changes—not necessarily malware.

What is UiRobot.exe?
UiRobot.exe is UiPath Robot’s Robot Command Line Interface (CLI). UiPath documents it as the terminal tool for executing projects, installing processes, connecting to Orchestrator, tracing activity and performing other Robot administration tasks. It may be launched directly by an administrator, by UiPath Assistant or by the Robot service, depending on how UiPath was installed and configured.
That identity makes it different from a Windows component such as explorer.exe or svchost.exe. Removing or replacing it can stop UiPath automations, while an unrelated executable that merely uses the same name could be malicious. Treat the name as a clue, not proof.

Is UiRobot.exe safe or a virus?
There is no universal yes-or-no answer. A signed UiPath copy in a normal installation directory is consistent with legitimate software; an unsigned copy in a temporary, download or other user-writable folder requires investigation. A custom UiPath destination is supported, so an unusual path is a warning to verify rather than automatic proof of malware.
Use all four checks
- Confirm the installation. In Task Manager, right-click the running process and choose Open file location. Check whether UiPath Robot or UiPath Studio is installed and record the complete path.
- Inspect the signature. Open the file’s Properties, select Digital Signatures, and inspect the signer and certificate chain. A valid signature from the expected UiPath publisher supports authenticity; an invalid, missing or unverifiable signature needs further review.
- Check the hash and metadata. Microsoft Sysinternals Sigcheck can display version, timestamps, hashes, signature details and certificate-chain information, and can query VirusTotal by hash. The current Sigcheck documentation is version 2.93 (Microsoft Sysinternals, 2026). Investigate an unsigned file rather than assuming that its name makes it safe.
- Read Defender’s event. Open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Protection history and inspect the threat name, path, process name, detection type, status and action. Those fields tell you what Defender actually detected and where.
If the file is unexpected, newly created in a temporary location, unsigned or detected by Defender, do not restore it or create an exclusion simply because it is called UiRobot.exe. Keep it quarantined or remove it, update Windows security intelligence and scan the computer. A trusted, independently verified installation can be submitted to Microsoft as a suspected false positive instead of bypassing protection.

UiPath’s installer type and release affect the default directory. The following locations are common defaults, not an exhaustive allow-list.

UiPath supports both UiPathRobot.msi and UiPathStudio.msi. If you need to replace a missing or damaged executable, use the official installer for the installed release and architecture. Do not download a standalone UiRobot.exe from an unofficial EXE or DLL site.
How do I fix UiRobot.exe not found or a damaged installation?
Reinstalling a random copy is risky. First establish which UiPath edition, release and installation scope the computer uses, then repair that installation.

- Record what is installed. Check Settings > Apps > Installed apps (or Control Panel > Programs and Features on older Windows) for UiPath Robot or Studio. Note whether the application is per-user or per-machine and whether scripts refer to a custom directory.
- Check the expected path. Search the documented folders and the administrator’s chosen destination. A shortcut or scheduled task that points to an old 32-bit path can produce a not-found message even though a valid 64-bit installation exists.
- Repair with the matching installer. Obtain the UiPath Robot or Studio installer from UiPath, match the installed release and architecture, and run its repair or reinstall option when offered. Do not overwrite a signed file with one copied from another computer.
- Recreate only stale references. After repair, update a scheduled task, shortcut or script to the verified path. Preserve project files and configuration before removing an installation.
How do I stop the UiPath Robot Service error?
For messages such as Could not connect to UiPath Robot Service or The UiPath Robot Service is unavailable, check the service before changing files. UiPath’s documented wording is: One or more errors occured. (Could not connect to UiPath Robot Service. Make sure the service is started!)
- Press Win+R, enter
services.msc, and press Enter. - Find UiPathRobotSvc. If it is stopped, select Start; if it is running but unresponsive, use Restart and note any error shown.
- Open the service’s Properties and check its startup setting and logon account. Do not change the account or permissions unless the error specifically indicates a permissions or logon problem.
- Start Robot, Assistant and Studio at the same privilege level. Running Assistant or Studio as administrator after the other components started normally can prevent inter-process communication.
UiPath documents service-start timeouts and registry-permission problems as separate causes. Changes to ServicesPipeTimeout or service permissions require administrative control and a restart; apply them only when the observed timeout or permission diagnosis matches the documented case. A blind registry change can mask the real fault.
What privilege, session and resource issues can make UiRobot.exe fail?
A healthy executable can still fail to start a job when Windows supplies the wrong session or insufficient resources.
UAC and credentials
Unattended jobs can stop at a User Account Control prompt generated by a startup application. Check the robot account’s credentials, confirm that its logon session is valid, and make sure the service is active. A lost administrator privilege or an expired password can look like an executable failure.
CPU, memory and disk
UiPath documents resource shortages as a reason the Executor cannot start. Check Task Manager for sustained CPU or memory pressure and verify that the system drive has working space for the job, logs and temporary data. Correct the underlying shortage before repeatedly launching the same process.

Message-size limits
A job can fail when its output exceeds maxMessageSizeInMegabytes. Keep large results in Orchestrator Storage Buckets or Data Service rather than returning the entire payload through the job message.
Remote desktop and display context
RDP resolution and display-scaling differences can move or distort UI targets. Compare the resolution and scaling used when the automation was built with the unattended session, and keep those settings consistent where the workflow depends on screen coordinates.
Where are the logs for UiRobot.exe errors?
Use the log that matches the execution mode instead of guessing from a pop-up.

- Leave the file quarantined while you verify whether UiPath is installed and whether the detected path matches that installation.
- Update Windows and Defender security intelligence, then run a full scan. If malware may be hiding while Windows is running or the detection persists, run Microsoft Defender Offline.
- If the file is independently verified as a genuine UiPath binary and the detection appears incorrect, submit it to Microsoft for analysis. Do not disable Defender to make the program run.
- Allow or restore a file only when you trust both the software and its publisher. Exclusions reduce protection and should not be used to silence an unexplained alert.
Microsoft describes quarantine this way: it moves the file to a safe location and blocks it so it cannot run on the PC. That containment gives you time to verify the installation without executing the suspect copy.
Should I delete UiRobot.exe?
Not before checking whether UiPath depends on it. Deleting a valid copy can break Robot CLI commands, service startup, scheduled jobs and UiPath integrations, while deleting an impostor without scanning can leave other malicious components behind.
If you no longer use UiPath, uninstall UiPath Robot or Studio through Windows’ installed-apps controls, then remove only leftover folders after confirming that no scheduled task, service or automation requires them. If you do use UiPath, repair or update through the official installer instead of deleting the executable manually.
