uninstalllfs.exe is most plausibly the uninstaller created by the Windows installer for Live for Speed (LFS), not a Windows system component. A file with that name can still be counterfeit, however, so the name alone cannot establish that it is safe. Check its complete path, digital signature, hash and Microsoft Defender results before opening it. If the file is missing or damaged, the dependable repair is to reinstall the same LFS product and version from the official LFS download source, then uninstall it through Windows. If a copy sits in a random folder, is unsigned, is repeatedly recreated or is detected, quarantine it and scan offline instead of replacing it from an unknown EXE site.
What is uninstalllfs.exe?
uninstalllfs.exe (also shown as UninstallLFS.exe) appears to be the executable that removes Live for Speed. The LFS installer documentation explains that its installer makes at least one registry entry so the uninstaller can work. During a normal removal, that uninstaller can remove the LFS registry entries and shortcuts. It can also offer to leave the main LFS folder in place, so seeing game files after an uninstall is not, by itself, evidence of malware.

What one analyzed sample tells you
Gridinsoft analyzed one file named UninstallLFS.exe as a PE32 Windows GUI executable packaged in a Nullsoft self-extracting archive. That particular sample was 275,424 bytes, had a listed SHA-256 hash of 53be6d4304eb1f83bc923fe49447020663b8ff3e05582a20afdae2d1332d5474, and received a 0% detection result in that scan, analyzed on January 4, 2026. Those details describe only that binary at that time; they are not a universal size, hash or safety guarantee for every file called uninstalllfs.exe.

Is uninstalllfs.exe safe?
A copy installed with Live for Speed is consistent with a legitimate uninstaller, but you should verify the individual file before running it. Microsoft describes potentially unwanted applications as software that can show unwanted advertising, secretly use a PC for cryptomining or offer unexpected applications. A clean result from one third-party scan does not rule out a modified copy, a later threat or unwanted behavior.

How can I verify an uninstalllfs.exe file before opening it?
Use these checks while the file is still closed. If any result is suspicious, stop at that point and scan rather than experimenting with the executable.

- Record the complete path. In File Explorer, right-click the file, choose Properties and note the folder shown on the General tab. If it is running, open Task Manager, find the process, choose Open file location, then close the process without launching the file again. A path under the LFS installation directory is consistent with the vendor context; a copy under a temporary or unrelated system directory needs much stronger evidence.
- Inspect the signature. In Properties, open Digital Signatures, select the listed signer and choose Details. Confirm that Windows says the signature is valid and that the signer is one you expect. The absence of a signature is not a verdict by itself, but it removes one useful assurance.
- Calculate a SHA-256 hash. Open PowerShell and run
Get-FileHash -Algorithm SHA256 "C:pathuninstalllfs.exe", replacing the path with the one you recorded. Compare the result only with a hash supplied by a trusted installer source or a known-good copy of the same release. A hash identifies exact file contents; it cannot prove that an unknown download came from LFS merely because its filename is identical. - Update Defender and scan. Open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Protection updates and select Check for updates. Then choose Scan options > Full scan. Microsoft says Defender Antivirus attempts to block malware before it can infect the device, but no single scan should be treated as a permanent guarantee.
- Escalate if it comes back. If the file is detected again after a restart, use Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Scan options > Microsoft Defender Offline scan. The PC restarts and scans before normal Windows processes load, which can reveal software that hides during a regular session. Microsoft Safety Scanner is another on-demand option; each downloaded copy expires after 10 days, so download a current copy immediately before using it.
Why does uninstalllfs.exe keep appearing?
Repeated appearances have several possible explanations, and the location determines which branch is most plausible.
The LFS installation still exists
If the file is inside the LFS directory, it may simply be the uninstaller that the game installer intentionally placed there. A shortcut or an entry under Windows’ installed-app list can make it seem to appear even when no process is running. Check the path and the uninstall entry before assuming a threat.

An uninstall was interrupted
Deleting the game folder manually, losing power during removal or allowing security software to quarantine the executable can leave the registry entry and shortcut behind. Windows may continue displaying an uninstall option even though the executable is gone or incomplete.
A repair or reinstall recreated it
The official installer is designed to create the registry entry required by its uninstaller. Reinstalling the same product and version can therefore recreate uninstalllfs.exe as an expected repair action. Verify the new file’s path and scan it before using it.

A counterfeit or unwanted program is restoring it
A copy outside the LFS folder, an unsigned file that returns after every restart, or a file repeatedly detected by Defender is not explained by the normal LFS uninstall design. Do not keep deleting it while Windows is running; quarantine it, run a Full scan and then an Offline scan if necessary.
How do I fix an “uninstalllfs.exe is missing or corrupt” error?

1. Try the Windows uninstall entry
- On Windows 11, open Settings > Apps > Installed apps. On Windows 10 and older editions that use the older interface, open Settings > Apps > Apps & features.
- Find Live for Speed, open its menu and choose Uninstall.
- Follow the LFS uninstaller’s prompts. The LFS documentation says the process can remove its registry entries and shortcuts while offering an option to leave the LFS folder. Choose that option only if you intentionally want to keep the game files.
- Restart Windows if the uninstall entry or a shortcut remains visible, then check the installed-app list again.
This route uses the registration created by the official installer and avoids running an executable copied from an unknown site.
2. Reinstall the same LFS product and version, then uninstall
- Download the Windows installer from the official Live for Speed source at
lfs.net. Match the product and version as closely as possible to the one already installed; installing a different build may create a different uninstaller and leave the original registration unresolved. - Before running the installer, confirm that the download came from the official source and scan it with current Defender definitions. Do not use a replacement
uninstalllfs.exefrom a generic DLL or EXE-download site. - Install to the existing LFS location when the installer offers that choice. The installer should recreate the registry entry and the uninstaller files required by Windows.
- After installation completes, return to Settings > Apps > Installed apps (or Apps & features) and select Live for Speed > Uninstall. If the LFS uninstaller offers to leave the game folder, make the choice that matches your goal.

Confirm that you reinstalled the same edition and that the installed-app entry points to the location you repaired. If the entry points to a deleted drive or a different folder, remove the stale entry through the normal Windows uninstall interface only after checking that no current LFS installation uses it. Avoid deleting arbitrary registry keys: the LFS installer documentation specifically relies on a registry entry for its uninstaller, and removing unrelated keys can break other programs.

Security handling takes priority over repairing the game. Do not run, rename or upload a suspicious executable to an unknown website.

- Disconnect only as needed. If the file is actively launching programs or generating network activity, disconnect from the network while you preserve the path and scan results. Do not delete evidence before Defender records the detection.
- Quarantine through Windows Security. Open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Protection history, review the detection and choose the recommended quarantine or removal action. If Defender offers an exception, do not create one merely to make the LFS uninstall work.
- Run a Full scan. Update protection definitions first, then scan all local drives. Let the scan finish before reinstalling LFS.
- Run Defender Offline when it returns. A threat that reappears after restart may be loaded before the regular scan. Save work, choose the Offline scan and allow Windows to restart.
- Use a current Microsoft Safety Scanner copy if you need a second on-demand check. Each downloaded copy expires after 10 days, so an old copy is not a current test.
- Repair only after the system is clean. Once scans are clear, reinstall LFS from
lfs.netif you still need it and verify the new file’s path and signature before uninstalling.
Can leftover LFS files after uninstall be normal?
Yes. The LFS uninstaller can remove registry entries and shortcuts while giving you an option to leave the LFS folder. That design lets a user preserve the game directory for a later reinstall or manual cleanup. How can I avoid creating the same problem again?
- Keep the original LFS installer or obtain a fresh copy from
lfs.netinstead of downloading a standalone uninstaller. - Use Windows’ Installed apps page for removal so the registered uninstaller, rather than a copied executable, is called.
- Do not disable Defender or add an exception simply because an uninstall operation fails; investigate the detection first.
- When comparing files, record the full path and the exact build. A filename, byte count or third-party scan result can change between releases.
- If you intentionally leave the LFS folder during uninstall, remember that the folder’s continued presence is an expected choice and not a security verdict.
