uninstalltoolbar.exe is not a uniquely identifiable Windows component. The name can belong to a toolbar uninstaller, an unwanted bundled program, or a file using a familiar name. One third-party report marked a particular 57 KB sample with MD5 870ebd2abc4ddf16f5c9551428b71e66 as Adware.Toolbar on 2025-05-30, but that finding does not classify every file with the same filename.
Check your copy’s location, publisher signature, hash and current Windows Security result before deleting it. If the toolbar is unwanted, remove its parent app in Windows Settings or Control Panel, clean affected browser extensions and run a full scan. For a broken uninstall, restart first, use Repair or Reset when offered, then use Microsoft’s version-appropriate uninstall troubleshooter.

What is uninstalltoolbar.exe?
uninstalltoolbar.exe is simply an executable filename. It is commonly used by software installers to provide an uninstaller for a browser toolbar or another bundled utility, but Windows does not assign this name to a standard system file. Two files with the same name can therefore have different publishers, code, paths and behavior.
A filename is only a label. A legitimate uninstaller might sit inside the installed application’s folder and carry a verifiable publisher signature. An unwanted program may use the same name, place itself in a user-profile folder and alter browser settings or display advertising. A malicious file could also imitate the name, although the name alone cannot establish that conclusion.

The most useful identity clues are the complete path, file properties, digital signature, cryptographic hash and the result of a current security scan. Treat those clues as a set rather than relying on one characteristic.
Is uninstalltoolbar.exe safe?
There is no universal yes-or-no answer. A report from ThreatInfo records one sample at %localappdata%toolbar4, with a size of 57 KB and MD5 870ebd2abc4ddf16f5c9551428b71e66. GridinSoft classified that specific hash as Adware.Toolbar in an analysis dated 2025-05-30. It is a dated, hash-specific signal, not proof that your file is the same program or that every file called uninstalltoolbar.exe is unsafe.
Microsoft distinguishes potentially unwanted apps (PUAs) from malware. A PUA may show unwanted advertising, offer additional software or perform actions you did not intend, without meeting the definition of malware. Microsoft’s criteria emphasize clear notice, user choice and control; software that installs without meaningful consent or changes browser behavior without adequate disclosure deserves investigation even when a scanner does not call it malware.
| Clue | What it can tell you | What it cannot prove |
|---|---|---|
Path such as %localappdata%toolbar4 |
Where this copy is stored and which user profile owns it. | That the file is malicious; unwanted software can use ordinary folders. |
| Publisher and digital signature | Whether Windows can validate who signed the file and whether the signature is intact. | That the publisher is trustworthy or that the associated app is desirable. |
MD5 matching 870ebd2abc4ddf16f5c9551428b71e66 |
That the bytes match the sample reported as Adware.Toolbar. | That a different hash, even with the same filename, has the same behavior. |
| Windows Security detection | How Microsoft’s current security intelligence assesses the file. | A guarantee that an undetected file is harmless. |
| Browser redirects or unsolicited ads | That a toolbar or extension may be changing browser behavior. | Which executable caused the change without checking installed apps and extensions. |
How do I identify my copy before removing it?
Do not start by deleting a file from an error message. First preserve enough information to determine whether it belongs to software you recognize and to undo a mistaken removal.
- Find the full path. In File Explorer, right-click the file or the shortcut that references it and choose Open file location or Properties. Record the complete folder, drive and filename. A path under a known application’s installation directory is different evidence from a random temporary folder or a profile location you do not recognize.
- Review Properties. On the Details tab, note the product name, company, original filename and version. On the Digital Signatures tab, select a signature and choose Details. A valid signature means the signed content has not changed since signing; an absent or invalid signature is a reason to investigate, not an automatic malware verdict.
- Calculate a hash if you need to compare samples. Open PowerShell and run
Get-FileHash -Algorithm MD5 "C:pathtouninstalltoolbar.exe", replacing the path with the one you recorded. Compare the result only with a report you trust. A matching MD5 identifies the same bytes as the reported sample; a non-matching hash means that particular report does not describe your file. - Check installed software. Look for a toolbar, browser helper, search utility or recently installed program that owns the folder. Note its installation date and publisher before uninstalling it. If no parent application is visible, continue with scanning rather than guessing.
What symptoms suggest an unwanted toolbar?
Toolbars and related PUAs can be merely annoying or can interfere with normal browsing. General toolbar guidance from F-Secure notes that some change a browser’s home page or search provider and show unsolicited ads; those symptoms are context, not identification of this exact executable.
- A home page or default search engine changes without a clear choice during setup.
- New toolbars, extensions or search buttons appear in one or more browsers.
- Pop-up advertising or new tabs appear when you did not request them.
- The browser redirects to unfamiliar search or landing pages.
- An uninstaller repeatedly fails, leaves a startup entry or recreates the toolbar after a restart.
These signs can also result from a browser extension, a damaged uninstall record or another application. Use the path, publisher and scan checks above to connect symptoms to the correct program.

How do I remove the associated toolbar or app in Windows?
Remove the parent application before manually deleting its executable. This lets the uninstaller remove services, scheduled tasks, browser components and registration data that a file deletion would leave behind.
Windows 11 and Windows 10 Settings
- Open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps (called Apps & features in some Windows 10 builds).
- Search for the toolbar, browser helper or publisher you identified. Select the three-dot menu, choose Uninstall and follow the program’s prompts.
- Restart when the uninstaller requests it. Recheck the Installed apps list and the original folder after the restart.
Windows 10 support ended on 2025-10-14. The Settings labels and available support tools can differ by build, so use the instructions that match the edition still installed on your computer.
Control Panel alternative
- Press
Win+R, enterappwiz.cpl, and press Enter, or open Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features. - Select the related toolbar or utility, choose Uninstall or Change, and complete the vendor’s wizard.
- Restart and verify that the browser behavior and error have stopped.
Some modern apps appear only in Settings, while older installers appear only in Programs and Features. Check both locations before concluding that no uninstaller exists.
How do I remove browser changes left behind?
Uninstalling the desktop program may not remove every browser add-on or restore settings that were changed during installation. Check each affected browser separately.

Microsoft advises downloading software from official vendor sites and reading installer choices carefully. Decline optional toolbar or search offers when the installer clearly presents them, and avoid clicking through a setup wizard without reviewing each screen.

- Open Windows Security from the Start menu and select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection updates and check for security-intelligence updates. A scan made with old definitions is less informative than one made after updating.
- Open Scan options, select Full scan and start it. A full scan can take considerably longer than a quick scan because it checks files across the device.
- If suspicious software persists or Windows Security cannot remove it while Windows is running, use Microsoft Defender Offline scan. Save work first; the computer restarts and scans before the normal Windows session loads.
- Review the result under Protection history. Quarantine or remove a detection according to Windows Security’s prompt, and do not restore a file merely because its filename looks familiar.
Microsoft also provides a route for submitting a suspected unwanted file. Use that route when the local result is unclear or when you believe a file is being missed, and include the path and hash you recorded.
How can I fix uninstalltoolbar.exe uninstall errors?
The correct fix depends on whether the error is a damaged uninstall entry, a running process, missing files or software that has already been removed. Work through these steps in order and stop when the associated app is gone and the error no longer returns.
1. Restart and retry
Restart Windows, sign in to the account that installed the software and try the uninstall again. A restart can release a file still in use and complete a pending installer operation. If the program is open, close its windows and browser processes before retrying.
2. Use Repair, then Reset when offered
In Settings > Apps > Installed apps, open the app’s advanced options if Windows provides them. Select Repair first; if that does not restore the uninstaller, use Reset only when you accept that the app’s stored data and settings may be removed. Return to the app entry and choose Uninstall after the operation completes.
3. Try the other Windows uninstall interface
An entry that fails in Settings may still have a working legacy uninstaller in Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features. Conversely, an older entry may be broken in Control Panel while the Settings app can remove it. Do not delete the program folder first; the uninstaller may need those files.
4. Use Microsoft’s Program Install and Uninstall troubleshooter when applicable
Microsoft’s Windows 10 guidance includes the Program Install and Uninstall troubleshooter for problems such as corrupted registry keys or incomplete uninstall data. Follow the current Microsoft instructions for your Windows version because the download, prompts and supported scenarios can change. Select the affected program when it is listed, allow the tool to repair the uninstall information, then restart and try the normal uninstall again.

5. Scan after a failed or partial removal
If the program disappears from the app list but uninstalltoolbar.exe or browser symptoms remain, run the Windows Security full scan and, if needed, Defender Offline. A partial uninstall can leave a file behind, but a remaining file can also belong to another program; let the scan and the recorded path guide the next action.
6. Handle a missing-file or “not found” message
If Windows reports that uninstalltoolbar.exe is missing, the app may already be partly removed while its uninstall record remains. Do not download a replacement executable from an unverified site. Use the Microsoft troubleshooter route for broken uninstall data, or reinstall the same application only from its official vendor source if the vendor’s documented repair process requires it, then uninstall it normally.
7. Check for persistence without using registry cleaners
After removal and a restart, inspect the browser extensions and Installed apps list again. If the same entry returns, record what reinstalls it and run another full scan. The available evidence supports Windows’ own uninstall and scanning tools; it does not establish a need for third-party registry cleaners or a paid antivirus product.

Exact labels vary by edition, build and app packaging. If a menu item is absent, use the other supported path instead of editing the registry manually.
What should I do if Windows Security detects the file?
Follow the detection’s recommended action, usually quarantine or removal, and restart if Windows requests it. Do not add an exclusion simply to make the error disappear, and do not restore the file because another program’s shortcut points to it. After remediation, check browser extensions and the app list for components that the executable may have installed.
If the detection is classified as a PUA rather than malware, you still have a choice: remove it when its advertising, redirects or installation behavior is unwanted, or keep it only if you knowingly installed it and accept its behavior. Microsoft’s PUA criteria focus on consent and control, so an unexpected installation is a meaningful reason to remove the software even without a malware label.

When should I get further help?
Escalate the issue if the file returns after a full scan and uninstall, Windows Security cannot complete an Offline scan, or browser redirects continue after every unfamiliar extension and app has been removed. Keep the recorded path, publisher details, hash, detection name, Windows edition and the exact error text. Those details let a qualified technician or the software vendor distinguish a damaged uninstall record from a separate persistence problem.
Do not post the executable itself or personal files publicly. A hash and the exact error message are safer starting points for technical support than uploading an unknown binary.
If you want an optional shortcut after trying the manual steps, Outbyte PC Repair can check for more than 100 common Windows issues, clean temporary and cache files, review vulnerabilities and log app crashes. It complements antivirus software rather than replacing it; results vary, no tool repairs every crash, and its free trial lasts at least two days before a paid subscription.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is uninstalltoolbar.exe a Windows system file?
No. Windows does not reserve that filename for a core component, so its presence usually relates to software installed separately. The file’s publisher, path and signature are more informative than the name shown in a warning.
Can I delete uninstalltoolbar.exe manually?
Only consider manual deletion after the parent app has been uninstalled, the file has been scanned and no legitimate program still depends on it. Deleting it first can leave a broken entry that continues to generate errors and may remove the program’s only normal uninstall route.
Why does the file come back after I remove it?
A second installed component, browser extension or incomplete uninstall can recreate it. Compare the returning file’s path and hash with your original notes, then inspect recently installed apps and run a full Windows Security scan instead of repeatedly deleting the executable.
Does a PUA detection mean my computer has a virus?
Not necessarily. Microsoft treats potentially unwanted apps as a separate category that can include intrusive advertising or bundled software without meeting its malware definition. The practical response is to evaluate whether you consented to the program and remove it if its behavior is unwanted.
