utau.exe is the Windows program file for UTAU, a legacy singing-synthesis application. The filename alone cannot tell you whether a copy is legitimate. Is utau.exe safe?
It can be safe when obtained from a trustworthy source and verified, but you should not approve an unknown copy simply because its name is familiar. Safety is file-specific. Check the provenance and scan result for the exact installer or executable you downloaded.
What the sandbox report actually found
ANY.RUN analyzed a file named utau0419cInstaller.exe on October 19, 2024, in Windows 10 Professional, build 19045, 64-bit. The submitted file was a PE32 self-extracting cabinet installer and the report displayed the verdict “Malicious activity.” The run observed one process classified as malicious and one as suspicious among 145 total processes.
Those observations describe one submitted sample and one sandbox session. ANY.RUN’s own disclaimer says it does not guarantee the maliciousness or safety of content and that information can be distorted by user actions. The result is therefore a warning about that file’s hash and provenance, not proof that every legitimate UTAU installer or every utau.exe process is malware. A process count from one run is not a prevalence rate.
How to interpret the path and publisher fields
A process running from the observed legacy location, C:Program Files (x86)UTAUutau.exe, with the stated UTAU description and company field, is more consistent with a normal installation than an executable launched from a temporary directory with a random name. It is still not a security guarantee: attackers can copy files into plausible folders or alter metadata. Treat path and publisher as clues that must be combined with a known download source and a current scan.
How do I verify an utau.exe file before running it?

utau.exe, right-click it, and choose Open file location. An unexpected temporary folder, a randomly named directory, or a user-profile subdirectory deserves extra scrutiny. Could 32-bit compatibility be causing the error?
Yes, architecture is a plausible compatibility issue. The analyzed executable was identified as PE32 and ran from Program Files (x86), which is consistent with a 32-bit legacy application on 64-bit Windows. That does not identify a single fix, but it explains why modern 64-bit assumptions or an incompatible plugin can prevent startup.
