uvatlas.exe is Microsoft’s UVAtlas command-line utility for 3D asset production. Microsoft’s documentation identifies the current command-line distribution as the “UV Atlas Command-Line Tool (uvatlas.exe).” The related UVAtlasTool sample is an implementation of the legacy DirectX SDK command-line sample that uses UVAtlas, DirectXTex and DirectXMesh instead of the deprecated D3DX library. Why is uvatlas.exe running on my PC?

Is uvatlas.exe safe?
There is no universal safety verdict for every file with that name. A binary obtained from Microsoft’s documented UVAtlas sources, with expected project provenance and a valid publisher signature, is consistent with the legitimate utility. A filename by itself cannot establish authenticity because another program can name itself uvatlas.exe.
Check the file’s identity before opening it
- Record the complete path. In Task Manager, right-click the process and choose Open file location. For a file on disk, right-click it in File Explorer, choose Properties, and note the Location, Size and Created or Modified dates.

Run an updated full scan
- Open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection updates and choose Check for updates so the security intelligence is current.
- Return to Scan options, select Full scan, and start the scan. A full scan can take considerably longer than a quick scan because it examines files across the system.
- Open Protection history after the scan and follow the action offered for each detection. If the file is not needed, choose quarantine or removal rather than restoration.
Use Defender Offline when a detection persists
If a threat keeps returning, or Windows cannot remove it while running normally, choose Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Scan options > Microsoft Defender Offline scan. Windows restarts into a separate scanning environment, which can inspect files before many startup programs load. Save open work first and expect the restart to interrupt running applications.
Use the Malicious Software Removal Tool as a follow-up
Microsoft’s Malicious Software Removal Tool (MSRT) can remove certain prevalent malicious software after an infection. It is a post-infection cleanup aid, not a replacement for a continuously updated antivirus product. Use it alongside, not instead of, regular Defender protection.
Turn on potentially unwanted application blocking
Open Windows Security > App & browser control > Reputation-based protection. Where the options are available, enable both Check apps and files and Potentially unwanted app blocking, including app and download blocking. Submit a suspected false positive

2. Obtain a known-good build
For a legitimate development installation, return to the Microsoft UVAtlas documentation or the project source you deliberately selected. 7. Reproduce with a known-good sample
Run the documented cup.obj example, or another small mesh supplied by the project, in a clean working folder. If the sample succeeds but your asset fails, inspect the asset’s format, topology and export settings rather than reinstalling Windows.
