vc_redist.x64.ex is almost certainly a truncated or mistyped reference to vc_redist.x64.exe, Microsoft’s 64-bit Visual C++ Redistributable installer. The package installs shared Microsoft C and C++ runtime libraries that games and other applications built with Microsoft Visual C++ need in order to start. The correctly obtained, Microsoft-signed installer is legitimate; a file with the same name from a third-party download site is not automatically safe.
For a failed installation, start with the latest supported Microsoft package, verify its digital signature, run it with administrator rights, install pending Windows updates, and reboot. If a code such as 1603, 1714, 0x80091007 or 0x80070654 remains, stop repeatedly rerunning the installer and use the matching diagnostic path and installation logs described below.

What is vc_redist.x64.exe?
vc_redist.x64.exe is the executable installer for the x64 edition of the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable. It is not a game, a Windows cleaner, or a general-purpose DLL repair utility. Its job is to place Microsoft C and C++ runtime components on Windows so software compiled with Microsoft Visual C++ can use them.
Many PC games ship a Redistributable installer in their setup folder or invoke one during first launch. If those runtime files are missing, damaged or too old, a game may refuse to start, show a missing runtime message, or close before its window appears. Installing the runtime does not reinstall the game and does not replace the game’s own files.

Microsoft’s documentation describes the package as installing Microsoft C and C++ Runtime libraries. The current supported downloads page is Microsoft’s latest supported Visual C++ Redistributable downloads. Visual Studio 2017, 2019, 2022 and 2026 applications use the shared v14 Redistributable family, while older applications may still require a separate legacy package.
Is vc_redist.x64.exe safe?
It is safe when you downloaded it from a Microsoft website and the file is digitally signed by Microsoft. Microsoft explicitly warns not to install a Visual C++ Redistributable downloaded from a non-Microsoft site or an installer Microsoft did not sign. A familiar filename alone proves nothing because malware can be renamed to look like a legitimate installer.
How to verify the download
- Download the package from Microsoft’s supported-downloads page or Microsoft’s Visual Studio downloads page. Avoid “DLL download” pages, file mirrors and repackaged bundles.
- In File Explorer, right-click the downloaded
vc_redist.x64.exe, choose Properties, and open Digital Signatures. - Select the Microsoft signature, choose Details, and confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid. If the tab is missing, the signature is invalid, or the signer is not Microsoft, delete the file and obtain a fresh copy from Microsoft.
- Check the file’s location before running it. A copy in your browser’s Downloads folder or a game’s official installer directory can be normal; an identically named executable in a random temporary folder deserves extra scrutiny.
Do not disable security software merely to make an unsigned copy run. If your security product or organization blocks the Microsoft download, follow its policy and investigate the detection rather than bypassing it.
Do I need x64, x86 or ARM64?
Choose the Redistributable architecture that matches the application, not simply the architecture of Windows. On 64-bit Windows, a 32-bit game still needs the x86 runtime; a 64-bit game needs x64. ARM64 is intended for Windows devices using ARM processors and software built for that target.

If you are unsure which architecture a game uses, check the game’s publisher documentation or installer requirements. Installing x64 because Windows itself is 64-bit will not satisfy a 32-bit program that is looking for x86 runtime components. Some computers legitimately need both x64 and x86 packages because they run applications built for both targets.
Which Visual C++ version should I install?
For applications built with Visual Studio 2017 through Visual Studio 2026, Microsoft recommends the latest supported v14 Redistributable. The installed runtime must be the same version or newer than the MSVC Build Tools used to build the application. Updating to the current supported package is therefore the sensible first attempt for a modern game.

Legacy applications can be different. Visual C++ 2013 and earlier packages remain side by side when an older program requires them; the shared v14 package is not a universal replacement for every historical runtime. If a game specifically lists Visual C++ 2013, install that matching Microsoft package rather than deleting it in favor of v14.
Microsoft’s current support listing for the Visual Studio 2026 v14 package includes Windows 10, Windows 11, and Windows Server 2016, 2019, 2022 and 2025. An older Windows edition may not be supported by the newest package, so check the operating-system requirements shown on Microsoft’s download page before proceeding.
Why does the Visual C++ Redistributable installer fail?
Installation failures are usually Windows Installer or system-state problems, not evidence that the filename itself is malicious. Microsoft identifies several recurring causes and correlates:
- The installer is not running with sufficient permissions.
- Antivirus or endpoint protection is blocking a setup action.
- A file needed by setup is locked by a running game, launcher or background process.
- Windows components or servicing updates are out of date.
- The downloaded package, an installer cache, or a previous Redistributable installation is corrupted.
- A previous version cannot be removed cleanly, leaving Windows Installer unable to continue.
The numerical error is a clue, not a complete diagnosis. For example, error 1603 is a generic Windows Installer failure and does not identify one universal fix. The detailed VC Redist log is more useful than repeatedly launching the same executable.
How do I fix vc_redist.x64.exe errors on Windows?
Work through these steps in order. After each change, run the installer once and note the exact result. Repeating an unchanged attempt can leave the same locked file or damaged cache in place.
1. Obtain a fresh Microsoft installer
- Open Microsoft’s latest supported Visual C++ Redistributable downloads.
- Select x64 only if the affected application targets x64. Select x86 or ARM64 when that is the application’s target.
- Save the installer locally instead of running an unknown copy supplied by a pop-up or unofficial download page.
- Verify the Microsoft digital signature using the Properties procedure above.
If a game included its own installer, compare its version and source with the current Microsoft package. A bundled installer can be legitimate, but the Microsoft download is the appropriate baseline for a current v14 application.

2. Run setup with administrator rights
- Close the game, launcher and any setup window that may already be open.
- Right-click
vc_redist.x64.exeand choose Run as administrator. - Accept the license terms, choose Install or Repair when offered, and allow the process to finish.
- Restart Windows even if setup reports success. A reboot releases files that were in use and lets pending component changes complete.
An administrator launch addresses access-denied conditions, but it cannot repair a corrupt installer cache or an invalid package. If the same code returns, continue rather than assuming the account is the only problem.
3. Install Windows updates and reboot
- Open Settings and go to Windows Update (on Windows 10, this is under Update & Security).
- Choose Check for updates and install all applicable updates, including servicing or .NET components Windows offers.
- Restart when requested, check again for updates, and then retry the verified Redistributable installer.
Out-of-date Windows components can prevent a current runtime package from registering correctly. Do not interrupt an update or shut down while Windows is applying it.

Antivirus and endpoint-control software can quarantine or block a legitimate installer action. Review its event or quarantine history for the exact executable and timestamp. If your security policy allows a controlled test, Microsoft troubleshooting guidance describes temporarily disabling protection, running the installation, and re-enabling protection immediately afterward. Do not leave protection disabled, and do not create a permanent exclusion unless an administrator has approved it.
On a managed gaming PC, contact the administrator instead of changing security settings. A policy block can only be safely resolved by the person responsible for that policy.
5. Release locked files
Error 32 commonly means that a file is locked or in use. Exit the game, launcher, overlay, mod manager and other software that may load Visual C++ components. Check the notification area for launchers that remain active, then restart Windows and run the installer before reopening those programs.
A clean reboot is preferable to terminating random processes. Do not delete DLLs from Windows or a game directory to “unlock” them; that can create a second, unrelated startup failure.

6. Collect and read the installation logs
When the failure persists, collect logs with Microsoft’s Visual Studio and .NET Log Collection Tool. Microsoft identifies the resulting archive as %TEMP%/vscollect.zip. VC Redist entries use a name like dd_vcredist_<arch>_yyyyMMddHHmmss, where <arch> indicates the attempted architecture.
- Run the collection tool as instructed by Microsoft’s troubleshooting documentation and wait for it to finish.
- Open the resulting
vscollect.zipfrom your temporary folder. - Search the VC Redist log for
Error,FailedandSystem Error. - Record the first meaningful failure, the architecture, the timestamp and the exact package version before seeking support.
The first error is often more informative than a final rollback message. Keep the log archive private because it can contain system and account details.

These meanings describe the documented category of each code, not a guaranteed single remedy. A 1603 or 1714 entry can have different underlying causes on different computers, which is why the log and the package architecture matter.

If setup reports that it cannot remove a previous version, do not manually erase its folders or DLLs. Windows Installer needs its product registration and cached package information to uninstall safely. Use the Windows Installer troubleshooting utility recommended in Microsoft’s guidance, or download the exact older Redistributable package named in the error so the uninstaller can access its original data. After the older entry is removed or repaired, restart Windows and install the supported package that matches the application’s architecture.

First distinguish a runtime problem from a game-specific problem.
